The entire Boston discography is always amazing to me. Every single time I hear any of it. They were so far ahead of their time. And then in the 80's, when this album was released, the music scene was so different. Their sound remained unchanged overall, yet stood right up along side the more current artists. They are in a class by themselves. Their music is timeless. I will always love Boston.
@dr47822 жыл бұрын
Despite being known as a 1970s rock band, Boston didn't have their biggest hit until 1986, when "Amanda" spent two weeks at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100, beginning November 8, 1986. It was the only #1 hit of their careers, but ironically, though the song is well-remembered today, it's not their signature song. Their signature song is their very first hit, "More Than A Feeling," which peaked at #5 on the Hot 100 on December 25, 1976. In all, Boston had eight Top 40 hits on the Billboard Hot 100 from 1976-1987. Here's the list in chronological order: "More Than A Feeling" (#5 in 1976) "Long Time" (#22 in 1977) (often segued with the instrumental prelude "Foreplay" on Classic Rock radio stations) "Peace Of Mind" (#38 in 1977) "Don't Look Back" (#4 in 1978) "A Man I'll Never Be" (#31 in 1979) "Amanda" (#1 in 1986) "We're Ready" (#9 in 1987) "Can'tcha Say (You Believe In Me)/Still In Love" (#20 in 1987) TRIVIA: "Amanda" is the last #1 hit on the Billboard Hot 100 not to have a music video made for it. Also, "Long Time" is often played on Classic Rock radio stations in conjunction with "Foreplay," which is an instrumental prelude that segues into "Long Time" on their self-titled debut album. Boston have only released six studio albums since breaking out in 1976, but their first four albums were all huge sellers. Here's the list of their first four albums, including their years of release and RIAA sales certifications: Boston (1976) RIAA certification: Diamond (17X Platinum) Don't Look Back (1978) RIAA certification: 7X Platinum Third Stage (1986) RIAA certification: 4X Platinum Walk On (1994) RIAA certification: Platinum

For sure. No bottom end. But it was supposed to be some big landmark in production for Tom Scholz. So I don't get it. Landmark in what? Compression? Guitar tones sound great of course. It needs a new mix. But the songs are some of their best.
@mstorrboy2 жыл бұрын
@@ilikepingpong i remember reading in the cd booklet about how it was all about doing it with no synths or computers which were all the rage at the time, and that all the sounds were achieved with just recording equipment and instruments. A song that clearly fits into the definition of a power ballad sung by the late Brad Delp, one of the most powerful voices ever. The release of this song has quite a backstory as well. Recorded six years prior to appearing on an album with a leaked version released two years ahead of it being formally released on Boston's Third Stage album as a single. If the record company had not pushed for the release of the second Boston album it may have filled the hole in the Don't Look Back album.

In the 1970s, I was a cub scout from the suburbs of the Springfield, MA, area, and my pack went to a Boston Bruins game. We got there safely and sat in our seats, but the stadium was empty except for the two teams and a few other sports fans. I cannot remember who won, as that was close to 50 years ago, but I suspect it was the Bruins as everyone seemed to enjoy themselves. On the way home, we drove through Boston, everything was open, and all the lights were on, but there were no people anywhere. I mentioned out loud that something was wrong, and the den's mother, who was driving, agreed. We got home safely, and on Monday, when I went back to school, I discovered that nobody was in town was a riot in the Combat Zone because somebody bought all of the tickets to the concert by the band Boston and nobody was allowed to see it. I was there for history. While I don't like any other team from Boston, I am a Boston Bruins fan because of this incident. I like the band Boston. BTW the city of Boston banned the band Boston from ever playing in the town again, but that didn't hold.

Brad and Lex, just found your channel today. Great reactions so far! Dad is a huge Boston fan, and besides his repetitive habit of blasting the albums on Sunday mornings, I remember at the peak of his career, how excited he was to have a six-disc changer in his Buick, and cruise to/from work playing a mix of Enya, Boston, and Sade. Please tell me you’re going to give the full “Walk On” album its due. That is Scholz at his technical and creative best.

Some of the liner notes on this album give you both a sense of the time it took to make the album, and of Tom Scholz's sense of humor. “This was an unusual recording project. How many studios could you walk into and find the guitarist punching the tape deck controls with his right foot while blasting power chords out of an amplifier the size of a peanut butter sandwich? How many projects could you listen to in 1980, ’81, ’83, ’84, ’85 and find someone still working on the same song?" Then he talks about measuring time by the number of light bulbs changed and the number of times he pressed record. …… "Do you know that when some recording tape sits for a long time it gets sticky? Neither did I. How would you feel if you took out your four-year-old, one-of-a-kind mix of “Cool the Engines,” (with no safety copy) and halfway through the song, the reels stop dead with a bang because your tape has become glued to the guides and must be peeled off the playback head like adhesive tape. The fix: spread a suspicious looking silicon concoction onto the tape as it runs by, and try not to let the enormous beads of sweat dripping from your forehead get your capstan rusty.”

In the mid-80s, many were excited for it, but some were expecting this album to pratfall, because music had changed so much since 1978 when we had last heard this band. It was a strong success because the pessimists forgot that Boston had changed pop music so much that everyone else had caught up with their innovations by 1986. (Journey is a band that immediately comes to mind.)

She took me back MANY times but finally had enough and my "charm" no longer worked. That was over 30 years ago and I still wonder, "what if?" Also, EDDIE MONEY had two songs out around that time that killed me too, "I'll Get By" and "Fall In Love Again." Ok now I'm depressed. Ha!
