I first heard this song on Radio Eireann sung by Delia Murphy sometime in the fifties. Delia Murphy sometime in the fifties. Delia was the first true Irish ballad singer to be recorded on a disc and was a huge star in her day. Her version was recorded around 1941 and I came across it 1960.
It is of Irish American origin and was sung in the uptown drawing rooms of Boston and New York during the late 1800s. And, like most folk songs, it is based on fact.
