Boston is classic second generation classic rock. Before the 80s hair metal of cheesy love ballads. Songwriting and musicianship still meant something. Glad the mints hit the mark.🤘 Very similar to the teen spirit riff, which is very similar tk the "rape me" riff (same thing but up half a step). And music does in fact come from the soul. As you say, millions know music theory, but few make magical music. Most people know how to read and write, but few are beautiful poets.

As a musician I can tell you from my point of view the sounds I hear are what motivate me first. After I'm sufficiently satisfied with just listening and soaking in the enjoyment of the music, then I get into the mechanics of the music. Sometimes there's a riff or a solo that makes me say, "Hey I've got to learn how to play that", it's the amazement of the sounds they make with a guitar etc. that makes me say WOW, IVE GOT TO LEARN THAT, lol. Before I became a musician all could do is listen with amazement, later on when I got older I went into the how part.

Yeah Sori, this song makes me feel good and that's why I like it. I love Boston's melodies...to me that and the unique guitar tone sets them apart from other bands. A lot of power metal is all about feeling as well, and as you explore it further, paying attention to those melodies or vocals as a way of bringing out emotion is magic and you will get so much out of it. I'm not saying that lyrics are not important, but they are not the end all, be all, of music.

Todd Peucker Kansas was one of the most talented bands out there in the '70s. Go listen to some live shows of Boston from the '70s. Yes, they were very good, but they couldn't replicate what was put down on tape in a live situation, and I've listened to shows where Brad Delp's voice wasn't up to hitting some of those notes he does on album (understandable, for sure). Kansas live, on the other hand...Their 1978 live album 'Two For The Show', according to the album liner notes, was untouched from the recording truck tapes. "What you hear is what came off the tapes, no fixes" is what it basically says.And it sounds absolutely fantastic. Plus, I've seen Kansas live 5 different times myself, and can confirm that they bring the genuine goods, live.
@toddpeucker9905
@toddpeucker9905 5 жыл бұрын
sopwithsnoopy kansas' music style is easier to replicate than Boston's more sonic, powerful guitar driven songs. The casual rock listener tends to think of two songs when Kansas is mentioned, however almost everything off Boston's first 2 albums sounds familiar, classic and catchy. By the time they recovered from bankruptcy due to the lawsuit, it had been 8yrs and although their third album was a commercial success driven by the hit Amanda, the power ballad sound of the 80s was not their roots and didn't sound as natural for them. They lost years of probably putting together a stunning discography. Both bands knew music theory and I'll say Kansas had better harmonies. But for as long as they've been around and still touring to this day, their fame is rooted in those two extremely well arranged radio hits. None of their other work quite touches the ear or soul like those two tracks. A two hit band that performs well live is the unfortunate summation of Kansas. Their fan base will undoubtedly laud their body of work, but you have to have a particular affinity for that hybrid folk-prog sound. I feel Boston's classic tracks appeal to a broader spectrum of people. My opinion only and as always to each their own.

A little history here. Tom Scholtz (leader/founder and principle writer) is a audio guru. Tom wrote and recorded all the songs for the premier album,"BOSTON" in his basement playing all the instruments himself. He called a friend of his, Brad Delp to come over to his house to add some voices to the songs. The version you just listened to, as I recall is like 90 percent what he and Brad did in his basement. Maryann. Tom said in a interview when asked about this girl, with a sheepish smile, " When I was a kid I had a huge crush on my cousin. She was the most beautiful girl I ever saw, her name is Maryann." So, when the album, "BOSTON" was a hit Tom had to go out and find and hire musicians so they could tour the album.

Pound-for-pound the best concert I've ever been to...and I've been to everybody including McCartney. The band was energized by a very enthusiastic crowd which became even more ecstatic by the band's performance and sent the energy right back. I've never seen anything like it. The perfect concert. for me personally it is a mix of both, I listen to metal and hardrock, because it makes you feel like a badass, and the technical side of metal and hardrock is sick, and bands like Pink Floyd, more for the beauty and magic in the music.

Nirvana had some great songs, but they were no where on the level and creativity of Boston. I grew up listening to all the great bands from the 70s and 80s and only a few bands from the 90s and on would be worthy of opening at concerts for the 70s and 80s bands. The 70s and 80s bands had true ARTISTS that played their own instruments and wrote their own songs and many of those songs still live on today. When millennials listen to music where I work guess what music they listen to mostly? They listen primarily to 70s and 80s bands so I think that says a lot about preference.

The majority of the world's population does not play a musical instrument thus their experience with music is through feelings while those who play instruments will almost certainly technically break a song down upon initial hearing. Both musicians and non musicians can experience a song through the heart as well thus the reminiscing.

This is a great song, but you should really react to their song "Foreplay/Long Time" it's one of the best songs ever, with guitars galore! Also, if you want to hear one of the greatest live songs ever, with an amazing guitar solo, you should react to "Do You Feel Like We Do" by Peter Frampton.

if you are trained in playing a musical instrument, whether formally or self-taught, you are going to enjoy a song because of its complexity, ingenuity, and technical aspects. A person who is not musically trained is going to be focused on the tone and feelings the song gives them regardless of the technical aspects of the song. Both points are valid because the experiences of the person listening will determine how they react to the music they hear.

I started playing guitar at six years old and every song to me is a point in time and memory, I believe the first song I played was Autumn Leaves - yes I started with jazz contemporaries - but it takes me back to when I was six years old. I mention such due your discussion, BTW... listen to forplay/longtime from the same LP or smoking. (although my personal favorite from the LP is Something About You), Anyway, musicians are a very “eclectic” group as we tend to appreciate more complex musical sounds be it polyrhythms, complex harmonies and strange melodic approach via unusual scales… etc… it takes us a bit of time to appreciate simplicity for what it is and how it may draw an ear - truth is art has no bounds. Same rhythm as Team Spirit but different chords (harmony). This was the first song on Boston's first LP and recorded in a basement on a TEAC reel to reel analog tape. It's a song about pining for a lost love but remembering the good of it. btw... those guitar tones on that lp were unique - and could not be replicated anywhere easily - for the time when this was released (predates digital effects). Tom Sholz who was an MIT grad and guitar player (song writer in that band) built his own stompbox to achieve that sound. It's all analog. I will say this as a guitar player, one of the amazing things about a stringed instrument have complete control of a "string" and the sound you may get out of it - probably why most have an ego. ;)

When Smells Like Teen Spirit came out I was 18 and thought it was the best! My older brothers liked Boston and I was like “meh” about their music. Now, I’m 46 and have grown to love Boston’s music and while I’d never consider Smells Like Teen Spirit “meh” I would rather listen to More Than a Feeling hands down over that song. Funny how age and wisdom have changed me. I learned how to play Smells Like Teen Spirit back in the day and now I just wish my work day could end because I’m inspired to go home and learn how to play More Than a Feeling. Oh, and Sori is right as usual while Vin just likes the sound of his voice.

Everyone reviews Rainbow with Dio. Rainbow's biggest hits (On the radio)were by Joe Lynn Turner-Street of Dreams or Stone Cold, and Graham Bonnet-All Night Long or Since you've been gone. Dio was good, but he wasn't as big as everyone makes out. And if it's Rainbow with Dio, nobody reviews Man on the Silver Mountain or Long Live Rock & Roll. My 2 cents.

@@pthor6265 Yes, it's your opinion, you're entitled to it, can't go around saying Dio wasn't as good like it's a fact, again, that is your opinion. You want to express your thoughts and opinions about things, you have to be open to what other people say and feel. Just because you feel something a different way than someone else, don't make you more right than they are.
