The cellist is superb. The pianist has the toughest job and is getting there. The violinist is glad not to be under pressure by the master. Another great lesson.

Maestro Zander's coaching is phenomenal; he does indeed have an extraordinary ability to inject needed life and vitality into these gifted students' music making. I have to give the poor pianist kudos for withstanding such an "in-your-face" coaching! Zander reminded me of Seinfeld's Kramer at times with his manic, hyper-charged personality--gesticulating and thrusting his arms and body inches from the performing pianist, singing loudly right in his ear and thumping on the piano and even the poor pianist's back and shoulder even as he is performing. All this made a tremendous improvement in the quality of the ensemble playing but I truly commend the poor pianist for holding up so well.

I agree. But its funny if you watch him conduct the orchestra, he's a lot more reserved

The pianist's facial expressions...

looks to me like he's a bit on the autism spectrum (very much just a guess, I would not presume to know) - very gifted, but connecting was difficult for him, perhaps Ben's approach wasn't fully received but he found a way to change even the pianist who is a virtuoso in technique and keeps the beat really well, yet fails to connect with others fully. Perhaps music is going to be the way to help him connect. I would wish it.

@@liordavid4567 My apologies if that came across as an attack . I read that you feel this way though. From my perspective, I assure you that it was not meant as one, but my words were a response to someone judging your facial expressions - I think you're an amazing musician and if what I think I saw in this amazing video is not at all true - then there's no reason to feel attacked - then it's simply a stranger's "opinion" or viewpoint - it has no bearing on you unless you choose for it to have an impact. - Sincerely, wishing you only the very best David :)

In less than ten minutes, Ben managed to change the performers' entire conception of what the piece is all about. This kind of radical transformation in students' conceptions would, in Ivy League humanities courses, require a "trigger warning", since it would probably make students "uncomfortable". This class in chamber music performance is an example of simply extraordinary teaching!

It is an example of extraordinary teaching! But your dig at trigger warnings is a complete non sequitur. Radical transformation in students' conceptions is what great teaching is all about, even in the Ivy Leagues... Plenty of good teaching goes on there as well.

There were several situations (violin, cello) where I'd have said 'Thank you, I will leave now.' Why? Because it is a very difficult situation if an external person tries to dictate what happens. That's exactly what happens here: Abby on the cello and Ben... I like these happenings, but not this Mendelssohn. Abby was buried - sorry.
