What's the secret behind botanical gels and why are they better in sealing tight curly hair strands than oils and butters? Let's dive in and chat about humectant, plant based gels for moisturised curls.
If you love reading and want to dive more into botanical gels and things I haven't addressed about humectants like film-forming humectants, yes there's a difference, then read my blog post here: rabielleparfai...
It will help you understand what products to avoid, if their formulations contain humectants that suck the moisture directly from your hair or draw too much moisture from the air into your hair, making your hair frizzy in both cases.

I have not really used botanical gels as sealants. But when I have used it, I noticed my hair stayed moisturized for a really long time. And yes I had no flakes or greasy feeling.

I don’t know where my reply went but thank you for watching and I love your observations. I’ve seen many others saying the same and that’s why I think including botanical gels/lotions/jellies /leave-ins into the hair routine instead of just doing the LOC/LCO method makes more sense. ☺️♥️

This is the what Black Girl Curls teaches but it took me a while to get it. It’s important to note that when you start this process your hair needs to be free of all those heavy oils and butters which may take a while. Use a good clarifying shampoo followed up with a moisturizing shampoo. My combo now is to use UFD after I wash and condition my hair followed up by asiam So Much Moisture when I am out of the shower.

Thank you for sharing. 🥰 What BGC teach I have figured out with the Maximum Hydration Method when I did my second big chop in 2015. I don’t live in the US, but Germany and have barely access to curl salon visits. It was a modified version of the Curly Girl Method for low porosity type 4c girls. That’s why they did these no-poo cleansing methods because they figured out conditioner only is building up on 4c hair. When more and more people started talking about it, it became a worldwide trend with lots of modifications. I don’t use baking soda or acv to cleanse my hair, but simply use sulfate free shampoos. That’s also how botanical gels became popular. A good hair cleanse is always best no matter how you style your hair and what styling products you use.

Basically, only use leave in creams when using a non botanical gel like eco styler. What about spray leave ins though? I find they are light enough to not disrupt the botanical gel but can give you that extra conditioning(especially if your hair is color treated) to make sure your hair is protected.

What’s your favourite leave-in spray? So far I’ve only used the Giovanni Vitapro Fusion Protective Moisture Leave-In Hair Treatment as a leave-in spray. It contains no oils besides Vitamin E and is made with many plant extracts. In the past I also simply used to dilute the Kinky Curly Knot Today Detangler with water in a spray bottle. Did the job very well. 🥰 Since spring, I’ve been using the Rahua Leave-In Treatment. The consistency looks like a very light whipped water based hair butter. Half pea size per section is all I need to not interfere with my curls. Which gives me the conclusion: all these years I’ve been using leave-ins, creams and moisturisers wrong when it comes to wash&gos on my curl structure. Too many emollients dilute the holding strength of gels, so less is more, if maximum definition is my goal. ❤️

Thank you so much! ♥️ We really don’t need a lot and should go back to the beginnings where we washed our hair regularly, conditioned, properly detangled and used styling products to match our signature looks & lifestyles. When everything becomes a burden and desperation something is definitely going wrong. We’ve been always told the magic one cure, but still people are suffering constant dryness masking it with more products. I’m glad I could inspire you to switch to more plant based gels.🥰

A question for you re the topper gels recommended by Black Girl Curls for humidity... most/all of them contain glycerin as the 2nd ingredient. How could they possibly be anti-humidity with such a strong humectant as the 2nd ingredient?? I avoid gels with high glycerin in the summer b/c they cause tons of frizz!!

@@cmw1336 I haven’t done the 30 Day Hair Detox and I haven’t subscribed to See Some Curls, so I can’t talk for their anti-humidity approved products. I will put the link to my latest blog post in the description so you can read more about humectants. This will give you all the answers. But your general observations are totally right and true. I also wonder how a humectant like glycerin can be an anti-humectant. Glycerin pulls moisture from your hair in very dry seasons and draws too much moisture into your hair when the environment is too humid. Both leads to frizz in these extreme climates. So these formulations either contain synthetic holding ingredients that will build a strong film around hair strands like PV / VA / PVP Copolymer or I don’t know 🤷🏾‍♀️. I live in a region where it rains a lot in Germany with seas surrounded, that’s why Jelloshot is working so well for me because it contains film-forming humectants but not a humectant like glycerin. Only my leave-in contains glycerin which is balancing the strength and softness of the gel cast. I will approach this more when I talk in depth about styling in different climates. ♥️

I can’t spend my money like that 😂 I live in Germany too and we that live there all know that Products shouldn’t be that expensive. Secondly I am very heavy handed . I buy 2.2 litres of Eco styler argan oil and use it with Camille Rose live in. 🎉 Camille Rose is expensive too but not as ridiculous as kinky curly: My moisture lasts 7 days. How long does it with botanical gels. Have you tried others like curl mix? I just wanted to support your content by leaving a comment. I wish you the best.

@@realmaureenoyakhilome Thank you for commenting but have you also checked the ingredients of Ecostyler? Ecostyler is not a plant based = botanical gel and this was what my entire video was about. Ecostyler is a synthetic gel which works nice for sleek hairstyles but not for 4c wash and gos. It also doesn’t contain humectants the way botanical gels are formulated and you would need something moisturising = a base underneath before layering Ecostyler on top for wash and go sets. I’m totally with you that the botanical gels I’ve presented here are expensive, but a little goes a long way, they come in big jars and they’re meant to be use with water. It also depends on what you’re willing to pay for hair care and if you’re conscious about what you’re eating, wearing and putting on your hair. Many of these brands use organic (Bio) ingredients, most of them are Clean Beauty brands and can’t be compared with regular commercial brands. It’s like comparing „Äpfel and Birnen“. These gels are 💯% non drying, don’t contain questionable ingredients and I’ve done multiple 4c hair wash and gos with them. I value quality over quantity ♥️.

@@realmaureenoyakhilome How long your hairstyle lasts depends on weather, the general state of your own hair and how often you washed it. Do you wear wash and go hairstyles the way I showed it in the video? Clumped and defined 4c curls that last days? Because they can last up to two weeks with botanical gels but I don’t go that long and love washing my hair twice a week. I haven’t used Curl Mix gels and I just checked and they aren’t available in Germany. Their gel costs 30$ on their website, now if you calculate the shipping and customs it’s as expensive as the botanical gels you can easily order here in Germany. Check out my video about A Week In My Wash&Go ☺️.

@@RabielleParfaitdo you have any good recommendations for topper gels or products to pair with botanical humectant gels ? A product that behaves like eco styler and not a base gel like ufd Camille rose , kinky curly so that it can last the full week? Are Yari EU products available in Germany? They have an inexpensive curl maker gel that I've managed to get work for me (worked well with jello shit and ich). I've also used it alone for short term fluffy hair. Overall tho I've been back to more synthetic gels for now.

Yes, I’ve just googled. It costs between 10-12€ excluding shipping. From what I see in the ingredient list, it’s not entirely botanical, but has glycerin and many extracts. ☺️ The one very thing that surprises me is the perfume in first third of the ingredient list. Why so high, is the scent strong? I did a couple of washngos with Ecoslay’s Jelloshot and Innersense I Create Volume & I Create Hold which also works nice. Do you pair the synthetic gels over Yari Curl Maker? ☺️

@@RabielleParfait yes the scent is fairly strong which is a downside but I'm not sensitive to it like some other scents. I've used it under cheap synthetic gels with decent results and I've used it alone. Currently tho I'm just using the taliah waajid gel (plastic gel) on its own and playing with colour hair waxes

I still end up with a crispy afro. I use uncle funky and innersense gel. How long did it take you, doing this method for your curls to clump/drop? 👍🏾✌🏾
@RabielleParfait
@RabielleParfait Жыл бұрын
What about switching either UFD or ICH with other gels/mousse for a soft hold, so that your hair won’t have a hard gel cast/crispy feeling? I started my fist successful washngos with my second big chop in 2015 while doing the maximum hydration method. So I had about one year of new growth that was coated with silicone & mineral rich products, but still my hair clumped right away. I started with Kinky Curly Knot Today and Kinky Curly Curling Custard. Do you use enough UFD on soaking wet hair? If you don’t see hang time, some sort of waves & clumping with your first layer of gel, you need to use more gel + water on smaller sections. UFD should glide through your hands. Kind of like sea weed.
@RabielleParfait
@RabielleParfait Жыл бұрын
When I neglect (dehydration) my hair, it’s coated with too much buildup or use too heavy cream based products to define my curls, this when the clumping goes away. I’m not sure if you’ve seen my first videos where I did a washngo with Camille Rose products. My hair turned into a curly fro because I used their Moisture Milk leave-in before layering the Curl Maker on top. So my hair wasn’t able to stay entirely defined.

@@RichRootz I’ve seen many putting a mirror inside their shower and others use their phone in a save case. Maybe this could be something for you. So you can really see what’s happening with your hair in the shower. Otherwise you will end up rushing, trying to define everything with ICH.

Depends on how you want to use it for and what texture you've got. It works perfect with KInky Curly Curling Custard to define curls. It also a great detangler when used with water. It's also a good leave-in for twisted and braided styles before you seal something on top. I haven’t paired it with other brands or styling products though, so I don’t know how well it binds with others. ❤️
