At the bottle dump, I find 3 - yes 3 poison bottles! Also, my best beer bottle so far and also my first lid (plain, unfortunately). All in all - an epic dig!

Those 3 poisons make waiting in the rain worth it I’d say. Willie you were lucky today. The mud gods were with you.

Hey - thanks for watching and commenting. I couldn’t agree more. Such beautiful things that they simply threw away. It’s amazing we can just go and take them from the ash they were thrown away with over 100 years ago! :)

I am watching from Canada. I am really impressed that you take the time to backfill your excavation site and remove all of the bottles and recycle the ones that you don’t want. Some bottle diggers just leave the holes infilled which can be a safety issue and cause site erosion.

Hi, thanks for your comment. I think it's really important to leave the land in a better state than it is found. They didn't really understand that concept back in Victorian/Edwardian times, but we know now that we can do better. Great to see people from Canada are seeing my videos too! Hope you have a good weekend! Willie :)

I'm just catching up with your videos and such interesting bottles. You reminded me of my grandparents having covers on the backs of their chairs. They were called "antimacassars" and were to keep hair oil off the furniture. I'm sure they continued to be used as a fashion thing long after people stopped using hair oil.
@dirtysecretsofscotland3 жыл бұрын
Wow - that's amazing - I had no idea they were called that. I know the things you mean too, but didn't realise it was for protection against hair oil! Thanks for that info! Willie :)

I’m the same. I love stoneware too, but my favourite glass bottles are poisons. They had all sorts of nasty stuff in them, from weed killer to rat poison, even strong disinfectant. Some of the substances were so poisonous that they’re now banned..!

Just found your Channel yesterday love it. I love bottles myself. So I bought a house in Grand Rapids Michigan. My dogs would run around in the backyard. And every week I would have to go out there and pick up broken pieces of glass. Lived there 25 years and a year before I moved in my side yard I found an actual bottle it look like your little hair oil bottle that you found about that size but it was Amber in color and it said poison down the side. I was thrilled. Now I wish I just started digging holes. Thank you for sharing
@dirtysecretsofscotland3 жыл бұрын
Hey - thanks for jumping on board! And it's a pleasure to share. Glad you're enjoying the channel too. That sounds like you were living on a bottle dump! Usually the broken pieces on the surface are a tell-tale sign that full bottles are lower down. If I'm ever in Grand Rapids, Michigan, lets get permission from the new owners and go digging! Willie :)

Well done, lovely finds! Love the poisons, the beer and the case gin! NOOOOOOO you can’t put it in the bin!! 😭 😭
@dirtysecretsofscotland3 жыл бұрын
Thanks Kyle. Was a great dig! Sometimes going right to the edge of the tip works out well. I only really did it to avoid the wet mud again! As for the gin bottle - it’s machine made. If it had an applied lip, I would’ve kept it. I don’t really keep the machine made bottles. If I find another one like that and you want it, you can have it. :)
@Kylehs073 жыл бұрын
@@dirtysecretsofscotland you did have a great dig indeed! Going to the edge of the tip really works out sometimes! Not as much effort and more finds! I once dug at the edge of my tip and was met with a mega seam which produced two printed lids so it’s always worth digging it right to the very edge! Ahh ok, still machine made bottles can still be quite rare and valuable! Maybe you should set up an Etsy shop for stuff like that? I’ve never found a case gin before so that is so kind of you to offer that! Thanks so much 😁

Bottle digging with Kyle wow - I’m going back tomorrow, weather permitting. Maybe I’ll go back to the edge of the tip!! And no problem. If I don’t want them, I’m happy to share them out. I might consider selling stuff later, but I’m just digging for my collection just now. :)

I'd heard of anti-macassars (but hadn't a clue what one was). Makes sense if macassar is hair oil, the anti-macassar is the doily on the back of the chair to prevent hair oil getting on the furniture.

Unfortunately it fits neither. I had a feeling I’d find a plain one first! Still, there’s always the next dig to find my first printed one (I hope..!). The cobalts are lovely - definitely my favourite colour of antique glass. :)

Wonder dig!!! I love your pictorial beer, gorgeous. You hit the trifecta on your poisons. I collect poisons myself. Do you have any with skulls and crossbones? They're my favorite of poison bottles. The highly embossed med is sweet too. How do you repair chips on glass bottles? I have a few that were to beautiful to throw away because of tiny chip. Take care Willie and stay safe.
@dirtysecretsofscotland3 жыл бұрын
Hi Debra, yeah - it was great! And the rain wasn’t too bad really - just a few heavy showers. I haven’t found a poison with the skull and crossbones just yet - I hope to though. I repair the chipped bottles by either filling the chip with clear epoxy resin, I use Arldite Clear, or by grinding them back, then polishing it out. :)

Please stop smelling old crap as it can kill you or worse. I seen a show where a guy smelled this weird mold, it cultivated in his face. He lost half his face before they could stop it. They also, as you know, used a lot of arsenic in Victorian and older times.
