Remember, these truss repairs are only suggestions and might not work on your project. Even though I clearly stated in the video that these repairs might not work on every project (as stated clearly in this video, here is a time frame link 3:31). The reason why I'm posting this comment is because someone suggested that the information in this video is misleading and that you should contact an engineer or even a local truss manufacturer for the correct repair information. I agree.

Awesome video. I just reinforced some webbing that was coming apart with plywood. To prevent splitting, and to prevent violent hammering from doing something bad to the drywall ceiling below, I used code-conformant structural screws and predrilled them just a bit. Worked great. No more creaking and popping as the attic heats up and cools every day.

I love it and sincerely appreciate it. I haven't came across a trust repair yet that use screws or even structural screws, but think it will be done more in the future.

I use PL-400 Construction glue for this repair as a extra strength The same as the center beam under the floor of a New Home Build. These methods are used by builders in Canada. PL 400 is water resistive and is recommended for Lamination of structural beams and Headers for studding and plywood but i like to use nails as a added guaranty over time.

Looks like I've been spared truss damage. From the attic I crawled out to where the garage overhead door wall is attached to the tie beams and all wood solid. No mud tubes, no maze pattern of tunnels and all wood solid to the feel. The garage overhead door wall is inset 5' from the edge of the roof and I imagine there's two Lally columns in the decorative brick pillars out front for support for that corner of the roof. Two feet in from the garage wall the tie beams change direction so this is where to use two 4x4 posts for support when removing 11' of garage wall and rebuilding the rough opening for the door. So this is a big relief. Termites completely ate away the garage door header and top plate.

The top and cap plate at my garage overhead door wall is termite eaten so I imagine the tie beams are involved too. I'll know more when I test with a drill through the ceiling sheetrock.

I have one bad bottom chord, it runs parallel to the partition wall separating the study and the bathrooms. Looks like too big a job for me so when I invest in a Louisiana fortified roof I'll let the contractor know. Right now repairing wall damage in the half bath and master bedroom. The termites obviously came in through the opening in the slab for the shower drain, but left the bottom alone and concentrated in the top plate area of the walls. Both window rough openings eaten up. I have new windows ready to go in and already assumed I would have to rebuild the rough openings. The garage overhead door wall is now completed.

Thanks for your videos. Wish I knew what I know now. The siding guys completely removed this piece from the end of my vaulted ceiling porch. I redid the siding years ago so didn't know or understand the consequence of what they did, i.e. it was no longer secured to the house. It got leakes and when the roof was replaced with better shingles and t1-11 the roofer didn't flash right or notice there were issues. Now it's leaking again and needs raising as well as secured to the house. Have you ever seen this done. Its sort of a combination of this and your new sagging porch video.

Any time I've seen these failures is because plumbers or AC guys cutt the wood out or cutt 2nd floor floor joists to install a fireplace. My QUESTION IS why is it just left and who's job is it to go back and rebrace around the AC, toilet drains, chimney etc.??? I've been buying 1980s quads to fix and rent and they all have these same problems. Example: 2x12x16 floor joist completely cutt off 2 feet from the end for AC. It's just hanging from the nails in the plywood floor. The whole floor had dropped 1 inch or more in that area. (16 inch on center) I in the case of the old insert fire place the ceilings of the downstairs apartments drop 2 inches because 2 trusses were cutt. I pulled the fireplace insert. Added a wall to support the trusses and turned the space into a closet.

I would imagine that anyone who cuts or removes any of the webbing would be responsible. However, if you're talking about going after someone 20 or 30 years ago, good luck.
@imout671

No, going after someone never crossed my mind I was just wondering if the inspector is responsible because he never looked or if the builder should have come back. Plumbers and AC guys don't know carpentry. Just didn't know how things worked real world
@gregvancom

I think the biggest problem with responsibility would be actually figuring out who did the damage. For example the building could have been built and inspected, before the damage was done. If the building was only a few years old, then you might find the culprit, but something that's 30 years old, might be hard to do. It gets even worse when people purchase properties that are in financial distress and take them as they are and then end up with problems like yours when they go to sell the home. If you're really interested, you could go down to your local building department and find out who did all of the work and who pulled all the permits, but you would still need to get someone to admit that they were the ones responsible and that's probably going to be difficult to do. Hope this helps.

gregvancom - permits are only good if there actually are permits! How many homeowners "employ" their buddies to help them on the weekends.

Forget the nails. You want a construction grade adhesive and 2'' structural screws

OK, so not an engineer, and have seen info that nails have more sheer strength than screws. However, why not create a sandwich with your plywood at each butt joint using steel bolts, washers, and nuts? I don’t even trust nails to hold on a birdhouse. Temperature and humidity variations work nails free.
@gregvancom
@gregvancom Жыл бұрын
It sounds like a good idea and I'm guessing nuts and bolts might drive up cost.

@@gregvancom Of course they would, however, the added strength and safety would warrant it. I’m assuming this is a personal build, not for multiple jobs. I just like maximum strength for lifting/support jobs. Good video.

A lot of misinformation and improper methods. Please, contact the truss manufacturer, they will have a repair designed by an Engineer for the application.

gregvancom I would draw upon my 20+ years experience in Truss/floor/wall panel design and Engineering....but that would be doing you a favor. You are Generalizing repairs of an Engineered product, this can lead to complete failure. I find these videos misleading.

I can easily understand how some of the information in this video can seem to be misleading, but as I clearly stated in 3:31, these repairs won't work for everyone. I also posted a comment at the top that might be more helpful to future viewers. Can you provide me with anything in the video that is false? There's a big difference between someone's interpretation of incorrect information and it being stated clearly in that manner.

If you glue the wood gusset prior to nailing them, they should be more structurally sound than the original metal nail plates. I prefer wood gussets to the metal crap they sell these days. Glued & nailed gussets have been in use for over a hundred years with no problems.

I have 1 broken roof truss. I plan to repair it but how can I tell who the manufacturer is? I couldn't find the name stamped or printed into the truss of my 1966 Oakland, CA home.
