As you complete your pond clean out, you might consider an upstream settling area to collect the sediment before it reaches the main pond. Perhaps just a deep enough hole to slow the water flow enough, with easy access for regular clean out.
@johnking8679Ай бұрын
Great idea, Mike !!
@Token_CivilianАй бұрын
^^^ - This. On trail crew, when there is a culvert to carry water under the hiking trail, there is always a settling pool just upstream of the culvert inlet. The purpose being to catch sediment & stones prior to it getting into the culvert. A few scoops at this easily accessible location once a year is far simpler than trying to get the gunk out of the culvert pipe. Same concept can apply for the pond, as OP of this comment suggests - make it an annual thing, but a task that can be accomplished easily.

@@Token_Civilianunfortunately though these areas become breeding grounds for mosquitoes. A mosquito block added to settling area would help with that too.

I live near an electric sub station just west of you in Ohio, this area serves as a storage facility for the Utility (Ohio Edison) as well. They have literal walls 100's of feet long of a similar contraptions they call Mats. They are constructed of huge railroad ties (long threaded rods through width) to be picked up and portable, and are used when they service or install power lines in soupy areas. They lay them out ahead of their equipment going in to work, and retrieve them on the way out. These things are pretty massive too, something like 10x20. They load them onto a special flatbed with a giant Cat fork truck in stacks, and truck them to the work site. A very similar process to what you've accomplished at the pond, and another fine example of creative solutions I can appreciate. Your place is starting to resemble a Messick's satellite lot, now I really have "Implement Envy".......

Hi Doug, I enjoy all your's and Mellisa's videos. It's called a chord road. Around here in mid-west Michigan, they were used extensively. Especially during the lumbering era trees had to be cut to clear a road anyway. Scab logs were cheaper and more available than fill.
@bobpursАй бұрын
Mike Logging in the Upper Peninsula they Corduroy the roads across swaps and soft areas with logs to get across. We had some logging on our property and thew used Old Side walls off truck and tractor tires. They would wire them together and lay them down as a Matt and cover them with dirt. We did some on trails to get to our hunting spots and works real good. Of coarse the tires last forever and never root.

Yes you are right, it is called "corduroy". It was common practice back in the day when building roads across swaps and low areas to lay logs down like you did and then build the road over the top of them. I have seen areas where roads have been reconstructed and they have dug up the old corduroy logs. In northern Minnesota one of the common species used was tamarack...known for its strength and rot resistance. Interesting stuff!

several of the roads in our town were built with corduroy. When the gravel starts to get thin you can actually see it. We usually try to keep a good 6-8 inches of gravel on top, but occasionally we'll have some get exposed. It makes for a solid road that holds up to semi traffic. Still used in a lot of logging operations around here.

Check out the map between Waskish and Baudette a distance of about 30 miles going across the big bog area. They had corduroy for about ten miles total on that road. My Dad talked about it and how impassable that road was in the twentys and thirties. That is still in the roadbed today! Terry & Diane in MN

Mike you need to buy yourself a dragline to clean out that pond. You could sit on top of the hill and swing that 10 yard bucket all the way down to the pond and stay clear of the mud.
