I had a supposedly top color salon ask which stylist I went to. I said L'oreal. I was getting the cheapest haircut cause my Mom gave me money for my Birthday. The woman said that I should keep going to L'oreal as it works for me and looks good 🤦‍♀️

Before lock down I had my hair done at a salon ($400+). During lock down the roots obviously grew out so I used Olia. When I was finally able to get back the salon the stylist asked me who had done my hair. I told her I did it with box dye and she was impressed on how well the color matched and how soft my hair was.

They actually used to sell (maybe still do) a box hair color product called “Down There Betty” and it’s for…yep, you guessed it, down there 😂 it came in blue and pink and I think natural colors too. You should have recommended Down There Betty for Box Color Betty 😂

I prefer box dye for my hair, but thats because Fantastic sams made my hair smell like it was burning, didnt tell me purple would turn green. Also had some sort of itchy scalp when i get it done there. But i would only ask about a color to look good on me 😁. You keep being great!

Fantastic Sam's is not fantastic, I do a friends cut and beaches because I got tired of correcting the cuts, and trying to condition her hair so it didn't look like straw.

Same thing happens to me when people find out I work at a vet. I swear if I’m wearing my scrubs in PetSmart or something, they approach me and they ask which OTC flea/tick prevention is the best, and I have to tell them that I don’t personally recommend any of those but they’re welcome to get what they want or I can recommend some prescription grade ones. They think I’m being an ass, no matter how polite I am. They also just want veterinary advice in general and most of the time I just have to tell them to go to the vet (oatmeal shampoo is not gonna cure your golden retriever’s hotspot, Margaret).

The thing about box dyes, is half of them are owned by the same companies that make professional dye and have most the same stuff in them. Everything is just cheaper if it's the mass produced version (as apposed to your stylist mixing one batch of your formula per a dye job.) You can get professional results from a box. *BUT!* You don't know which box is owned by which companies and which boxes aren't owned by companies that make professional dye at all. So while you CAN get professional results, it's not a GUARANTEE. It can go wrong just as easily as it can go right. You also don't know what level developer they have packed in there and they usually lean higher volume to be sure it works on everyone. Which can damage your hair if you didn't need it. It is a gamble and you need to ask yourself if saving the money is worth the risk to you (and it might be.)

As a general rule, I don’t buy dye from the drugstore!! Why would I go there when I can find a Sally’s at the very least or order the dye online? I’ve done my hair at home since I was a kid, but my mother made sure I knew the box dyes at the drugstore were cursed abominations made for ruining hair.

If you can’t afford a professional job done (& trust me I get it 100%, I have long hair, down to the top of my thighs) & it’s THICK, like when I braid my hair into two braids, 1 of my braids is the thickness of an average head of hair. It’s THICK. So getting my hair done is ALWAYS expensive. Even getting a trim isn’t a “trim”, it’s considered a cut bc a trim is 3-5 in taken off. Instead of box dye, go somewhere like Sally’s get a box or two of Ion hair dye that you want & get the according developer needed (it varies), mixing bowl & color brush. All for about $30. It’s more then $8 box dye but it’s considered professional quality & less damaging.

When I color my hair, I usually go to Sally's beauty supply to get everything I need. They have the hair color separated from the developer so you can choose your level of developer between 10,20,30 or 40 so you know what you are putting on your hair. You also get to chose between semi permanent, demi permanent or permanent hair color. Everything is also reasonably priced.

Lipton tea bags. Okay I know how this sounds but hear me out. My grandmother never wanted to dye her hair but she did not want to show her grays either. So she would put 9 or 10 tea bags in water on the stove, let it come to a boil and then cool it down. Then she would gather her hair and soak it in the bowl. The grey hair became honey colored. Lol! Unfortunately, I don't remember how often she did it or for how long at a time. Or how long it lasted and I don't even know if it's good for the hair. But Google probably does. Trailer park ingenuity for the win. Lol.

I don't know for sure, but I do know Madison Reed is highly recommended. Personally, I just tried an igk box kit for the first time. I haven't dyed my hair in years so I was rusty but the color came out amazing nonetheless. Its pricier than your typical box dye, but I get lots of compliments and people asking if it's my natural color! They also sell the colors and developers separate, as does Sally Beauty, so you can always find recipes online to mix your own. I think it's really important to use bond repair shampoo and conditioner after you dye your hair for good results as well. Sorry for the long reply, hopefully it helps!

If you like box dye, use box dye. But don't be surprised that stylists aren't going to recommend them as they aren't regulated. Thus, consistent good results can't be guaranteed. If it works for you, great! The video was more about the woman's rudeness of eavesdropping, asking for free professional advice, then being argumentative and rude when given an answer she didn't like.🤷🏻‍♀️. i can't take the chemicals (box dyes in particular)..they take my breath away. if i bother to do my haircolor again? it's gonna be red henna...not the most lovely scent...but it lets me breath!! time consuming tho. as for the vid?
