*This week marked the 10 year anniversary of Mazda's board cancelling the RX brand and further development of Wankel engines.* *The RX brand's bad reputation for unreliability and poor fuel economy saw sales in a steady decline as far back as 1986 with the last two RX model suffering a net loss for the company... it is estimated that the RX-8 lost nearly $3 billion dollars in development, production and warranty costs that bankrupted the company for the third time in its history.* *As part of the government bailout loan deal Mazda agreed to cancel development of the unprofitable Wankel engine and drop the failing RX brand.*
@doktorbimmer

@Bill Luo *While it is a common urban myth that the RX-8 was canceled because of emissions, this is simply not true.. The RX-8 continued to pass the world's toughest emissions standards (EPA Tier2 Bin5 **_AND_** the strict California CARB ULEV II right up until lack of sales ended production.* *Sales of the RX-8 were so low in Europe there was simply no reason to justify re-certifying the RX-8 to meet the Euro5 emissions standards as they would never sell enough units to recoup the costs incurred.*

Because the computer has many sensors reading the air mixture as air changes on a hot and cold day and as it also changes at sea level or up in a mountain 10,000 ft high, and a computer can easily adjust depending on how much you step on the pedal and control other components simultaneously for maximum performance, 😎👍🏽

@@doktorbimmer Bro you can cite history all you want. But there is a shop in Aussie that exclusively produces them to this day. So no it is not dead. Please see: kzbin.info/www/bejne/pXKcpX-ia9VspLs And I am sure they have already developed billet based parts that are capable of extreme durability. Did Mazda thought about this back in the 1960s. No why because times where different then and I am sure billet blocks and heads didn't come into existence. There is intellectual aptitude yes but pure intellect alone does not subsitute for pratically reality of manifesting things. You need skill and intellect to make something manifest. In the case with these guys. They are keeping this relic of mechincal engineering around and are improving upon it as we speak and breath. So yeah...do not doubt that something is assumingly futile because it has failed in the past. It can be reworked and improved upon as you can see with this shop here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/pXKcpX-ia9VspLs

Emissions and reliability aside, this is just a really cool engineering idea brought to life. Always cool to see designs that push against the comfortable norms. Hey Donut Media abd Science Garage, I'm currently working on getting my Airframe and Powerplant lisence. I've watched a several episodes and it's always a good refresher. I was wondering if you could talk about radial engines? About how they work, pros cons etc in sicence garage style.

I've always preferred wankels over piston engines because they're so much more elegant by design. If only they could work around the major drawbacks they have. I've love to have a wankel in a bike because of the amazing power to weight ratio, compactness and noise.

Ya. He quit tofu delivery (thus erasing all touge skillz) and became a doctor (idfk how) , bought a 911, tuned it, met this guy named Akio Asakura, got into a relationship with his sister (Eriko) , saw Akio die, saw this new Akio in old Akio's Z, see new Akio crash multiple times (without dying) , and eventually lose to him. Takumi's life has definitely gone downhill, if you know what I mean.

Red Valkyrie Haven't watch Wangan Midnight, and I personally prefer skills and techniques rather than raw power. But I heard of a tale of the crazed driver of the mountain passes. The tales tells that he can drift with his eyes closed. There's even rumor of him lighting a cigar while doing so. He runs a tofu shop, and people said he looks just like a normal middle-aged guy.
@panzeroige

I've heard that story many times. And for some reason, whenever it gets to the point of him lighting his cigarette, an odd piece if music begins playing. At first it sounds all silly and fun, but then it suddenly turns all serious. And just as the verse is about to kick in, you can here a different middle-aged man, possibly a friend of the crazed driver, shout at the top of his lungs for someone to save him. And then all sounds are cut, replaced by the clear sound of tires screeching. Gives me goosebumps whenever I hear it.

Cool concept. Aero guys love it because it's light compact and puts out "tons" of power. But in reality the three stoke design doest let itself well to reliability, efficiency (because the cuin is a lot bigger than they claim), and if you turbo anything it can have great power.
