8:05 while an understandable thought, the answer is probably yes. As a black kid growing up in poverty I experienced the same thing. I ended up competing on scholarship in division 1 athletics but I would have anyway without a similar childhood. It didn’t make me better..It just made me bitter. What Sr did introduce to Jr. though is boxing and it does indeed sound like his time on the farm influenced his boxing genuinely.

Seeing Roy in action back in the day was something to behold. His style was so entertaining, and he dispensed of his opponents with ease with flash. To say Roy's father was a tad excessive would be an understatement. Roy is a really guy too. He could have gone the other way, which is something that can happen. The son can become the father, and be just as much of a tryant to their own kids.

RJJ was a phenom. Before there was Floyd Mayweather, Jr. there was Roy Jones, Jr. And he dominated the P4P list for nearly a decade. Roy's style was premised on speed and agility. His type-2 fast twitch muscle fibers developed through playing other sport (ie. basketball) and training gave him an enormous edge over his opposition. The single biggest mistake RJJ made was rapidly reducing weight after dethroning John Ruiz for the WBA heavyweight championship. That weight reduction should have been natural and over a period of perhaps a year or so. Jones didn't have much fat on his body to allow a rapid weight loss, it was all muscle, the very thing that contributed to his explosiveness. It was evident in the 1st Tarver fight although he got the nod. Jones was just not the same fighter since.
@ifluxionАй бұрын
Agreed man. Roy Jones going heavyweight was not like James Toney going heavyweight. Roy Jones was always well conditioned and never had much fat on his body. So he could only go up, never back down. But he tried, and he paid the price.

Floyd is the missing link between Roy & Bernard

@@tyronetalyor2645 facts. In his prime dude was actually unbeatable by anybody in his natural weight class and above up to heavyweight. That was his limit. Once he fought Carver coming back down had effected his body. His lighting speed was gone over night. But when he was at middle weight he was making Top guys look amateur. He suspiciously went off the boil as soon as they found a test for the steroids he was on. Skills yes out of this world, strength and engine completely chemically enhanced. Good luck to him, they're all at it, he just had the better doctor. Peace and love.
@disgrapefruit2bitterАй бұрын
But Roy already had a lot of explosive power even as a kid in the amateurs. I don't think he would have been on steroids that young. Was Golovkin on something? Is Inoue? It's a combination of natural physical ability and tightly controlled diet and exercise regimens created by experts on nutrition and physiology.
@Chris-rl3nkАй бұрын
@@disgrapefruit2bitter 100% mate, I'm not suggesting for a second that I could just take PEDs and do anything like what RJJ did! The guy is a phenom. But... at that level, everything else being equal, the PEDs give you that extra 1% that makes the difference between being a nobody, and being a multi weight champion. Without going into it, it's too long to explain in this thread, but I know enough to believe that they are almost all at it at that level. And he was still the best by far, he was just sensational to watch. But, it's a fact that he was juiced to the hills. Weirdly, with regards to GGG I'd probably guess that he might be one of the very few (and I mean very few), who were not. All just guesses and speculation of course (but I know what I'm talking about, and you can believe me or not, you don't know me from Adam, so the smart decision is not). A question... Do you think Usain Bolt was on PEDs?
@disgrapefruit2bitterАй бұрын
@@Chris-rl3nk I tend to think anabolic steroid use is not that prevalent now because it's relatively easy to test for and more difficult to circumvent the testing (compared to blood doping for example). Now, even slightly elevated testosterone can get you banned from an Olympic event. By the time Bolt came around, it was more challenging but not impossible to fool the testing protocols. So maybe. You are going to have your Jim Thorpes and Bo Jacksons here and there that just possess incredible speed and power at their natural weight. What makes me think RJJ was not a regular steroid user is the fact that he was no longer getting highlight reel one-punch KOs once we went up to LHW and even against the worst HW champion of all time in John Ruiz, he was clearly fading in the championship rounds and could not have knocked him out even if he needed to. I'm more suspicious of guys who develop KO power suddenly or can KO much bigger guys as they go up in weight. As much as I hate to admit it, that includes both Pacquiao and JMM and that rivalry introduced me to boxing.
@serenityinside1Ай бұрын
Clinton woods , an English opponent, writes in his autobiography that jones would ONLY fight in the state that didn’t have mandatory PED testing ie “ there or nowhere / no £££”. He also talks about his strength being “ suspicious “.
