My issue with Mecca is their exclusivity contracts with brands like Nars, Hourglass, Laura Mercier, Chantecaille, which prevents aussies buying from those brands directly at better sale prices. Isn't that illegal and anti-competitive behaviour?

I don't mind exclusivity contracts. Mecca is taking the risk of buying bulk, and storage costs etc. What I hate is exclusivity contracts when they don't stock everything from that manufacturer, so you basically cannot get an item you want at all.

In the EU retailers are required by law to provide cost per 100g/100ml to each product. This way it's very easy to compare the actual prices of products of different sizes. It helped me countless times to make more informed decision about a purchase.

Pulling the sizes off their online when you live in regional Australia and don’t have the option of going to look at products in person is gross. Knowing you have exclusivity and still removing that when you have regions that don’t have easy access to stores is GROSSER. My closest store is a 14 hour drive. Sure I’ll just drop by to determine the size of these products
@taranullius92214 күн бұрын
Well, wait until you find out how difficult they make it to return products, which I mostly don't do, because I can't bother dealing with them so I waste hundreds of dollars a year on the wrong shade (like it's any different w/Chem.Warehouse and Priceline. At least Mecca give me reasonable free shipping and don't make me stick to a single Priceline store and half my order isn't in stock SOZ). I contacted them (AGAIN) via email 'cos I'm not ringing them like it's 1970 so they can generate a return label. I'm busy, I'm disabled, I sleep when I can and work when I can. So, multiple times tried to go "no, MF, here's all my info, here's the product, here's my order, here's exact condition description and a bunch of photos" and they're still "auuugh nauuuur, please ring our number. If you can't ring our 1800 number, ring our O/S Singapore number".

The concept of "per wear" could have worked. If they scaled the price and amount of product to the right amount for daily use before the expiry date. Then they could market it as not paying for excess product you won't get to use before it expires. And could also talk about it eliminating waste and not cluttering up your makeup collection. I would love mini lipsticks that I can actually finish using.
@justynawisniewska1213Күн бұрын
This is exactly what I thought! But their marketing department sucks. However for the brow pencil it is wasteful. You get less pencil in the same amount of plastic and people usually use these up quite quickly.
@tomjones2157Күн бұрын
@annicat648 if they made mini lipsticks to alleviate your guilt you would still pay full size prices. Because most of the production costs is packaging and mini size packaging actually costs more to make! The actual makeup inside costs a few cents

it sounds like even a dollar per wear would have been accurate and just as catchy!

I’ve been watching Beauty News since 2017 and I visited Australia in 2018 for 3 weeks in 2018 as my daughter was a backpacker there for 2 years. I visited a Sephora, a Mecca, a Myer department store, and a David Jones department store in the central business district of Melbourne and was pretty shocked at how expensive anything is beauty wise there. The CDN dollar and the AUS dollar were pretty much on par then. I realize that your taxes are built into the price and that you had a much higher minimum wage there but drugstore and luxury makeup was much more expensive there than even Canada back then. Then on top of it Mecca had exclusive deals with brands that made it difficult for you to actually get makeup as those brands would not ship directly to your country. Mecca’s ad is tone deaf in this economy but that’s what I think they wanted - a rage bait ad to get views and engagement on social media platforms. Mecca customers deserve better!
@lynettefinnigan95404 күн бұрын
Yes, make-up in Australia is really expensive, and we don't get all the Elf, Colourpop, etc brands, so when McoBeauty came out, we loved it, even though they got flack for being dupes, but they were happy with Elf, Colourpop, Aulta, etc dupes.. so I couldn't understand it!! Lots of double standards!!!

For me, it’s a storm in a teacup. Yes, cost per gram may not reflect the claims of the ad campaign. Our grocery products have priced per unit and cost per gram for comparative prices, would be great it cosmetics had a cost per gram price. However, when we buy cosmetics as consumers we will pay more for pretty packaging, prestige name etc. as a consumer cost per gram product pricing would be great. Often with smaller products and samples, the cost is in the packaging, which is why it’s good to consider this when buying travel sizes and samples. Frankly I feel the real crime is Mecca using contracts to ensure a market monopoly for them, there are brands that I would like to purchase from their websites, but cannot.
@MADEbySOUL4 күн бұрын
Nothing lowers a brand’s “prestige” or credibility than being unkind and unfair. Mecca’s PR team has to realize that when customers feel jilted by an establishment, they will go to a competitor or find another strategy for spite the brand.

Without being like "its the patriarchy!" ....its the patriarchy. Having the weight per ml/gram ensures transparency for consumers and is mandatory for many other industries But because the beauty industry is predominantly aimed at women...no one can bothered addressing it Same with the monopolisation of brands, theres no way mecca should be able to get away with it the extent they do. But whos going to bother to close that loophole?

My Sephora account was suspended without any notification, and I had to reach out to figure out what the issue was. For a couple months I couldn't purchase from Sephora, but it didn't bother me too much because I could still buy from Ulta or any of the brand's specific websites. What if something like that happened at Mecca, and you had almost no other options to purchase what you want?

Sure they'll except your cute nothings, but they'll get quickly tossed aside. You're better off buying boxes of tampons and toothpaste to donate. The kinds of jobs they're looking for don't care if they wear makeup. Minimum wage jobs just want bodies. I think if they'd used "standard" makeup products rather than trendy ones like cream blushes and serum products, their 50c face campaign might actually have worked out. I could absolutely believe that a pressed powder blush lasts more than 18 months even used daily, and uses like 0.05g of product per usage. Powder shadows last forever too. And I've never had a lipstick go bad even over multiple years. A standard bullet lipstick could absolutely last a year or so. Their foundation maths is way off no matter which way you swing it but I think a higher coverage foundation used sparingly could work out. They've just thrown any old shit together and counted on people not doing the maths that Jilly did (btw, never heard of her before today but I'm kind of obsessed with how well she worked all this out and explained it. I'm not in aus but I will definitely be doing some maths in the shop now lmao)

@erinh27753 күн бұрын
I’ve heard a bit about RMS being sold expired (I have 2 of their blushes and love them) but I’ve often wondered if it because the stock isn’t actually moving very frequently and that’s why. Whereas Nars (as an example) has huge turnover in store. I never hear anyone talk about RMS, I’d be interested to know how well they sell and if it really is just old product sitting around vs a manufacture issue.
@FlameMirage3 күн бұрын
When I first got to access NARS products, Mecca stores felt very unapproachable at first, however now I find it's very Charlotte Tilbury vibes of lights everywhere and it sometimes feels overwhelming. Especially in Chadstone when the Sephora opened up and they were directly competing with each other. I must say though, I have not bought from Mecca much because the Sephora sales with 20% off happen so frequently, I just buy the alternatives. Sometimes I want to buy Glow Recipe, but then I remember it's at Mecca and I don't want to buy it at full price. Sad for us Aussie consumers at the end of the day.

I dont think any competitor like Adore Beauty etc stands a chance when Mecca has exclusivity contracts with such big brands that are so popular. Its a big reason why Sephora hasn't been as big here. If Sephora was stocking brands like Hourglass, Urban Decay, Too Faced, NARS etc as well as the brands they currently stock they would have taken a big portion of Mecca's business.

If i want to buy a new purple shade, I don't need the best cost per wear. All the cosmetic companies should sell some products in different volumes. Most cream blushes are in containers bigger than I can possibly use even when I focus exclusively for the duration of their lives. Especially in the context of removing preservatives

I am definitely not happy with Mecca geo blocking certain brands in Australia such as Hourglass and By Terry in particular. Yes you can buy them from certain international retailers at inflated prices but not directly from the official brand sites. Last year I noticed as a level 3 member there was no notification on when the Hourglass palettes were being released for the "holiday season" , only to find out that the few that were sent were sneakily sold out online. I also was disappointed to find out they had sold out of a Westman Atelier blush trio set that had an exclusive blush shae in it that is only available on WA site in the US. They are not restocking any of these either. I am sure I will be dropping a level this year as I am not prepared to keep spending just to retain my current level. I also purchase my beauty products from Sephora, Adore Beauty, Myer and DJ's as well as Fragrancenet.

I wouldn’t rule out W Cosmetics. They’re starting to pop up around Brisbane a lot more and are getting a great audience with Asian beauty. I’m hoping they start to take up more market space. Priceline is also opening makeup only specialty stores called Atomica which might slowly take traction too.

On Mecca's site, if you pick a shade from the drop down menu, the weight of the product pops up next to the name of the product! The example of the Nars Blush that you guys showed does show the weight once you pick a shade. But for some strange reason, some items that dont have multiple shades/options to pick do not show the weight (like the Nars duo example)

I have tracked the use on foundations for years. A 1 oz foundation is 350-375 uses every time for me. Based on my actual use. Badly executed campaign but great concept IMO

I’ve bought the Hourglass Ambient Lighting palettes from both Cult Beauty and Space NK before end of 2024. It annoyed me no need though the stranglehold Mecca have. And I e decided to spend my money at Sephora, Cult or Space NK especially when these retailers have sales.

This is eye-opening. Now I get why Net a Porter has few beauty products for Aussies compared to previously.

The only issue in her calculation is that she calculated: usable product, packaging and indirect costs for the amount she thinks they tell you that you use. I couldn't find anywhere of that website the amount. For knowing the amount you need to use, the calculation, also rough, should've been: (individual cost /(price paid - packaging - indirect cost))* the ml. = ($0.09/($32 - x - y))*30 ml. then you have a most accurate approximation (there are some fluctuation in the real amount inside the product too that should be consider...); instead of hers: (individual cost / price paid)* the ml= ($0.09/$32)*30ml giving the 0.084 I hope this could help. This is only for the amount used. We can discuss, having all their costing, if they are ripping people off or not. What I can see, and agree, is the apparent cheaper pricing, with half or more the amount of the other brands and the waste of plastic.

Mecca has definitely got us by the short n curlies... I used to love them so much, but my desire to shop there goes down each year. I only shop there out of necessity when I want a specific brand I can't get anywhere else now.

Does anyone know if they’ve ever been reported to the ACCC for their anti competitive behaviour?

Adore sounds kinda similar to like an Ulta type of store in terms of having lots of sales and deals, which is a great alternative to Sephora in USA because the stores are huge and they carry just about everything. Idk if Adore will be doing the same thing, where they have drugstore brands, salon brands, and prestige (Ulta has a small offering of luxury), but its something beloved about Ulta. It’s fun to shop beauty products that way!
