Story one reminds me of when my parents bought my sibling a car when they learned to drive. They wanted to get a small car. Our dad complained that the car didn’t have enough storage and wouldn’t fit his golf clubs. He straight up admitted he planned to use his child’s car for himself.
@lina95355 ай бұрын
(Late reply, apologies) That was my thought as well. Granted I don't own, nor will ever get a car (my country has very good public transportation). But his point about the storage capacity really made me think "did you buy this for her or yourself?" My grandpa used to have a Volvo 245 GLT (model from 1993), and my sister almost got that car from him, but she HATED it. It was so long and hard for her to park, so she asked grandpa to just sell it (she did already have a car).

Yea I feel like a bunch of commenters didn't key in to the fact that she's literally getting thousands of dollars a year in help from the parents. Cars really aren't cheap either. By the time the parents pass she will likely have gotten equal value in "monetary" gifts.

I don't think any of the reddit comments shown were after the edit as all that info was in the stories edit. Still though nothing in the story said OP's sister got nothing at all and was cut out completely, kinda tired of people just assuming things like that on reddit, happens in too many stories where people try to fill in the blanks themselves then go off of their assumptions rather than the only thing they should go off of. The story itself.
@willj242 жыл бұрын
I agree, I was wondering about that as well, but as someone else pointed out, the comments my have predated the update. Still, given all of the information we have (and as always making the sometimes unfounded assumption that the OP isn't giving us slanted or selective information), it appears as though the sister has gotten LOTS of stuff that the OP has not (by their own choice), so taking their parents up on this one thing is more "evening the scales" than it is "blatant favoritism".

@MrJpaynebb3 жыл бұрын
ESH. The fiancee had a bad reaction/overreaction to this gift. Yelling at your partner in the driveway and then blowing up their phone is not the proper way to communicate one's grievances about a gift. OP had great intentions with the gift but this seems more of a vehicle he wants to drive than she does. A Jeep Wrangler is an SUV not a car. Not all car people want an SUV and there's a difference. She's the one who has to live with/drive this vehicle for the next several years. OP should have done more research by talking to her beforehand about types of cars she was looking at to buy before the summer so he could at least be in the ball park of vehicles she likes. Depending on where he got the used Jeep from he may be able to return it with only a minor rental fee penalty. iPhones are great and cool but you don't get an Android user an iPhone without them having a bad reaction or vice versa

Story one YTA, two things to never buy as a gift. A car, or a pet. It's a lot of long term commitment to force on someone. This is how pets get abandoned and unloved and relationships break. Making giant, inflexible decisions for people is a real big red flag. Being unwilling to communicate is another red flag. It's nothing about the gift and everything about the disrespect of their desires. My toxic family forces 'gifts' and 'favors' on me to manipulative me to stop defending myself. How dare I stand up for myself against this abuse, I should be more grateful. Never ever set someone up to use gratefulness to invalidate their feelings if you want a successful, healthy relationship

The car story definitely feels like the car was more for him than for her. Now he goes out and buys her a Great Dane without actually discussing if it would be a good fit for her. If it were me, I'd be PISSED because for most people, owning that kind of dog isn't feasible and it's more work than owning something smaller and takes less fodder (any Jeep vs a Honda Fit). I wouldn't be "screaming" about it, for sure, but who's to say she was actually "screaming" in this story??
