Story one reminds me of when my parents bought my sibling a car when they learned to drive. They wanted to get a small car. Our dad complained that the car didn’t have enough storage and wouldn’t fit his golf clubs. He straight up admitted he planned to use his child’s car for himself.
@lina9535
@lina9535 5 ай бұрын
(Late reply, apologies) That was my thought as well. Granted I don't own, nor will ever get a car (my country has very good public transportation). But his point about the storage capacity really made me think "did you buy this for her or yourself?" My grandpa used to have a Volvo 245 GLT (model from 1993), and my sister almost got that car from him, but she HATED it. It was so long and hard for her to park, so she asked grandpa to just sell it (she did already have a car).

Story 4: they're giving her sister 6000$ a year in rent so apparently she can't afford her own rent. They also bought her all her furniture and multiple cars! So to the people saying "she got nothing when you got something", they forgot that their parents have been giving her sister more money the last few years then OP.
@crkinjiraretaai

Yea I feel like a bunch of commenters didn't key in to the fact that she's literally getting thousands of dollars a year in help from the parents. Cars really aren't cheap either. By the time the parents pass she will likely have gotten equal value in "monetary" gifts.
@nerdy_evy

@@crkinjiraretaai yeah I saw someone in the comments did some math and if the parents have been paying the sister rent since she was 18 she would have received over 48000$ from her parents. I don't think any of the reddit comments shown were after the edit as all that info was in the stories edit. Still though nothing in the story said OP's sister got nothing at all and was cut out completely, kinda tired of people just assuming things like that on reddit, happens in too many stories where people try to fill in the blanks themselves then go off of their assumptions rather than the only thing they should go off of. The story itself.
@willj24
@willj24 2 жыл бұрын
I agree, I was wondering about that as well, but as someone else pointed out, the comments my have predated the update. Still, given all of the information we have (and as always making the sometimes unfounded assumption that the OP isn't giving us slanted or selective information), it appears as though the sister has gotten LOTS of stuff that the OP has not (by their own choice), so taking their parents up on this one thing is more "evening the scales" than it is "blatant favoritism".

On the last story for anyone who says the sister hasn't been givin' enough lets do some math she's 26 that's 8yrs. of getting $500 a month=$6,000.00 a year x 8yrs=$48,000.00 Not to mention the multiple cars and new furniture. Let's say she got 3 cars -1 cause her sister also received one making it 2 cars guessing $5-10 Grand a piece =$10-20,000.00 Lastly lets say another 5,000.00 for the furniture making this a running total"Cause she is STILL receiving $500 a month"$63,000.00-78,000.00. OP didn’t seem to know anything about what she was looking and then dismissed all of her choices. I’m suspicious of how he described her yelling. Did she just start yelling immediately? Or did this “discussion” turn into an argument? On Reddit a lot of people are saying this may be a case of Homer’s Bowling Ball = he bought her exactly what he wanted.
@MrJpaynebb

ESH. The fiancee had a bad reaction/overreaction to this gift. Yelling at your partner in the driveway and then blowing up their phone is not the proper way to communicate one's grievances about a gift. OP had great intentions with the gift but this seems more of a vehicle he wants to drive than she does. A Jeep Wrangler is an SUV not a car. Not all car people want an SUV and there's a difference. She's the one who has to live with/drive this vehicle for the next several years. OP should have done more research by talking to her beforehand about types of cars she was looking at to buy before the summer so he could at least be in the ball park of vehicles she likes. Depending on where he got the used Jeep from he may be able to return it with only a minor rental fee penalty. iPhones are great and cool but you don't get an Android user an iPhone without them having a bad reaction or vice versa

@@deedeeschway9566 I'm unsure as the the Homer's bowling ball thing, tried Google, still above my head (worrying for a bowling ball). Also, I didnt say she was, just that its sounds to close to. As in, I can't help but remember those videos when I hear this story. Also, I didnt see it as dismissing her choices, other than the mpg. She paid less then she would alone, got a car that was probably worth alot more even now than anything she could of bought alone. Sure, again, he should of gone with her to buy it, as thats just a really big buy, and used for years, but compare that to someone flipping out because the item they were gifted wasnt the specific one they wanted. Personally I say ESH, or even NAH if you stretch it. TL:DR both did wrong, but one had good intentions, another was upset at good intentions. I'd look more kindly on the former then the latter.

Or, you are easily led and convinced and he bought himself a car and it definitely wasnt from the heart and his fiancee knew that. With these stories where the response makes no sense, where you can call the person shouting about a gift entitled, when actually, they would have been happier spending their own money it probably means the OP is leaving info out. She is both entitled and the oppsoite and wanted to spend her own money, so something is missing. It may be that she has made it clear she is unhappy and wants more independence, so he buys her a car, thasts just an example, but something was missing from the story.

Story one YTA, two things to never buy as a gift. A car, or a pet. It's a lot of long term commitment to force on someone. This is how pets get abandoned and unloved and relationships break. Making giant, inflexible decisions for people is a real big red flag. Being unwilling to communicate is another red flag. It's nothing about the gift and everything about the disrespect of their desires. My toxic family forces 'gifts' and 'favors' on me to manipulative me to stop defending myself. How dare I stand up for myself against this abuse, I should be more grateful. Never ever set someone up to use gratefulness to invalidate their feelings if you want a successful, healthy relationship

Yes it was a nice gesture, but let me put it like this: Say she had seen a Great Dane online or being walked and she said she thought the dog was cute. Now he goes out and buys her a Great Dane without actually discussing if it would be a good fit for her. If it were me, I'd be PISSED because for most people, owning that kind of dog isn't feasible and it's more work than owning something smaller and takes less fodder (any Jeep vs a Honda Fit). I live in a small Midwestern town. My small-ish 2 bedroom house is worth $50K US. My parents' house is in a suburb of a larger town an hour away, a little larger, 3 bedroom, and worth $120-140K. So location matters a lot!

I feel like there was just a story about a teen getting a car and they were the ahole for not being grateful for what they got. At least she got one! If I gifted someone something and got that hostile reaction, I’d feel SOOO discouraged an probably heart broken. Seriously what a B. If she doesn’t like it THAT MUCH, she can use her big girl words to express as much. Calling op the ahole for buying her a car, my god.

She’s not a teen though. She’s a grown woman who researched and shopped around for a car she wanted. OP bought the car HE wanted for camping. He admitted it on Reddit. I don’t think this is the first time he’s bought her something for himself.

When my mom bought me a ‘93 mustang, did I like it? F no. Did I think it was hideous and lame in so many ways? F yea. Did I scream and be rude to my mom? Good god no. I SAID THANK YOU. It’s a car! Not some sort of plastic surgery!!!

@@giselleyfish3612 he’s not her mom. She was going to buy herself what she wanted. He bought what HE wanted. Like I said...I don’t think it’s the first time he’s done that.

Story #4 Did everyone miss that the parents give sis $500 a month and have given her several cars? That is $6,000 a year. Over 10 years that would be $60.000 they would have given her. If the parents continue at that rate for 20 years that would be $120,000 which is more than their house is worth. And who knows how much they have already given to sis. How much more would they have to give sis for upkeep on the house when they already give her $500 a month? I don't think the parents are playing favorites. They are just parceling out the inheritance to each child differently. NTA
