BRITISH RAILWAYS IN THE 1980's
EDGE HILL STATION (LIVERPOOL) On 17th March 1988
Continuing with my archive of video recording between the years of 1986 to 2001 this clip is of Edge Hill taken on 17/03/1988. Just out of the other end of the tunnel at Lime Street sits Edge Hill Station, the first calling point out of Lime St. Here you could see trains approaching up the hill through the murky fume filled tunnel with AC Loco's and diesels. I hope the video takes you back to this period with fond memories. Feel free to comment, good or bad, all comments are read and greatly appreciated, but it is not always possible to answer each individually. Sit back and enjoy this latest production remembering all those now long gone Locomotive classes and other types of traction. Many thanks for all subscriptions and all of those viewers who have kindly shown an interest in my material.

This video is amazing. It takes me back to my childhood before I moved to Northern Ireland I 1990. Growing up in Lancashire near the railway, I have fond memories of all these types of trains. Great job.

Love there were still 304s running - the first trains I ever went on from West Allerton to Lime St - and I used to use the Transpennine pulled by 47s to get to uni in Durham in the late 80s

Hattons model shop was just down Smithdown Lane, a short trot from Edge Hill Station. The buildings were saved from demolition by a national campaign in the 70s.

It’s interesting seeing the 31s on 4-coach sets, presumably they were the hourly Sheffield-Liverpool via Warrington expresses that were discontinued a year later when the TransPennine loco hauls were diverted via Manchester Picc and Newton-le-Willows, St Helens etc lost their quality services to Manchester, Liverpool, Leeds and York.

Can we all agree that 142s are/were awful? When they came in, it meant that there was gravel and coal having a smoother ride than fare paying passengers.

Grotty old stations, but boy the railways of Britain had atmosphere and something to be proud of. We invented them and many others copied what they saw. It changed the world.

And here is a classic example of why the pacers were nicknamed nodding donkeys. Personally I loved the 142's as they were the staple on my previous Preston to Colne local line. My first ride was on board a GMPTE liveried 142. I still remember the adverts. You will feel like you are at home. Yeah, maybe whilst a 7.5 eathquake is taking place! 😂 Wasn't very keen on the multiple unit style NSE livery on locos, although the revised livery really did look very smart on any loco.

Thanks again for showing these films, great to see NSE 86401, a regular in and out of Manchester Piccadilly for a while, also good to see the 304 units, I've travelled hundreds of miles on those right from when they were first introduced, a bit bouncy but always got me where I needed to be.

@@timstrainvideos142 No as all the 312/2's were Brum area ones and never saw that on the GE besides the Boat Trains were either loco hauled or 309's. I don't think (unless I'm corrected) that 312 is a true Dutch livery
