I have this theory that somewhere in California in the 80s there was a high school where "popularity" and prom queens and shit like that actually mattered, the people who went there grew up and made movies and tv about high school, and in the early 2000s the rest of the country had to nod along and pretend to understand

The one episode that I think will stay with me forever is the one when she goes to Italy and meets this guy. I’m seeing a lot of hate in this comment section on the evaluation of Sharen. I get that Sharen is a teenager and makes mistakes most teenagers do. But just because she’s a kid that does not make her being egotistical and selfish ok. Every one around her grows except her. At the end of every episode where she makes a mistake she says “ OH I LEARN MY LESSON”. The next episode she does the same thing. She doesn’t grow. You are allowed to grow and makeup for your actions as a kid.

Exactly, claiming someone is a "bad person" just because they make a lot of silly mistakes, can be self-centered, etc is an overstatement. A bad person is someone who has bad intentions, treats everyone like shit, steals, abuses and murders. People who make these overstatements as if they're holier than thou, as if humans have to always be a certain way all of the time and share the same values is why cancel culture exists and that shit in itself is toxic.

At 13/14 you’re learning a whole different level of socialization. I think it is a mixture. I can imagine why this show was started since i just realized alicia silverstone produced it. We are so used to the smart, down to earth girl being the protagonist that we forget about the 90s and early 2000s in which the dumb, chaotic, and very selfish girl was the protagonist. I like both having a protagonist that always makes mistakes and also one who makes none. I think th e former is fitted for kids shows while the latter is fitted for more older teenage or young adult shows, since "teenagers" aka preteens and early teens are the ones making all the dumb mistakes and having the WORST personalities ad being a terrible person to everyone. and later teens / young adults are often made to look dumb when they tebd to have their shit together. The word "teen" gets thrown around, thus, because everyone peaks at a different time. Some never do lol

well yall give yourselves too much credit as well because it wasnt just "canadian" shows -- a lot of american shows tackles these issues as well. they just DONT anymore because of karens. there were a lot of shows that were "groundbreaking" (as in, they werent groundbreaking at all because it was normal) in a LOT of american tv back in the 90s and 00s. It is just that channels became streamlined to a certain audience. You have cartoons being catered to the "random" ness of the early 2010s, (a lot was inspired by youtube and internet culture) which eventually gave rise to pointless plotlines and just garbage cartoon styles. Disney, which is mainyl popular for its live action shows, DID tackle a lot of these issues in the 90s and 00s. It's just that since disney is so goodie two shoes, it started becoming the popular channel for the karens to let hteir kids watch. so the second they have two SIDE CHARACTERS as gay parents, the internet goes absolutely BALLISTIC. So not only do you have cookie cutter recycled disney shows, but you have the completely random nickelodeon shows, both sitcoms and cartoons, having little plot.

In the end, it was actually _Maria_ who convinced the company to change, not Sharon. Sharon was just annoying.

But on the other hand, if they're 14-16 and they're really taking a look at living as a teenager... fuck man, you don't need a *reason* to mock and insult someone at that age. You can make up a reason as an excuse, that's just shitty teens being shitty teens. I was ostracized and mocked because when I was 12 I liked to read books. I was SUCH a big fan of Braceface! Born in 94, so I was a bit younger than her character. For quite a while I'd have flashbacks of that episode about her period anytime I'd have cramps LOL. Canadian media was much more progressive at the time in terms of "polarizing" content. The character Snake from Degrassi was the first to swear on TV in Canada in the 80's, which didn't happen in the U.S until after that. Some other serious episodes I believe it didn't air in the US for quite some time, too, due to their topics (i.e abortion & teen pregnancy).

But I remember CosmoGirl Magazine claiming the same thing about As Told By Ginger being a cartoon based off of Ginger Spice's (Geri Halliwell) childhood. I imagine he was replaced after his voice started to change. He was also Todd from Wayside (That Canadian cartoon based on the old Wayside books created by Holes creator Louis Sachar) but only in the pilot. Another example was him being in the cartoon George Shrinks. And he also voiced the kid version of Olie’s uncle Little Gizmo from Rolie Polie Olie.

Oh man. I don't know why this was recommended to me, but I'm glad it was. As a Canadian, we have some real gems when it comes to our animation. ReBoot, 6teen, and, of course, Braceface. I think Braceface hasn't necessarily aged well, but it has aged with a certain charm that's uniquely Canadian. I would *highly* suggest you check out ReBoot if you haven't already. It was produced by Mainframe Entertainment (now defunct) and was one of the first CGI only shows. It's basically about the sprites and binomes that live in your computer, their daily lives, and the threats that lurk beyond the seas of information. The first season is fairly episodic, and the character development is pretty flat, but Seasons 2 and 3 go HARD. Especially season 3 when the US channels dropped it and the team was able to just have the freedom of the Canadian Television standards. Tony Jay was hired on to voice the antagonist, Megabyte, and others like Andrea Libman, Scott Macneil, and Long John Baldry do a superb job. Anyways, I'll shut up now, but check it out.

I don't want to eat animals anymore!" and she was just like "yeah sure, ok" because she's a good parent and I only slipped up once for a turkey twizzler at school and felt bad and never did it again.
