I have this theory that somewhere in California in the 80s there was a high school where "popularity" and prom queens and shit like that actually mattered, the people who went there grew up and made movies and tv about high school, and in the early 2000s the rest of the country had to nod along and pretend to understand

That is definitely a very good theory. Considering most of animations/movies come from California or people who went/grew up in California, there has to be some origin for this trope.

The one episode that I think will stay with me forever is the one when she goes to Italy and meets this guy. She's all in love with him in Italy because he all foreign and "exotic", but when he comes to visit her in Canada she's embarrassed by him because he dresses and acts differently. Like this is so realistic. I've seen my friends do this and 90 Day Fiance is basically just that plus a green card...

I’m seeing a lot of hate in this comment section on the evaluation of Sharen. I get that Sharen is a teenager and makes mistakes most teenagers do. But just because she’s a kid that does not make her being egotistical and selfish ok. Every one around her grows except her. At the end of every episode where she makes a mistake she says “ OH I LEARN MY LESSON”. The next episode she does the same thing. She doesn’t grow. You are allowed to grow and makeup for your actions as a kid.

I wouldn’t call Sharon a bad person. She has good intentions, but she’s a self centered teenage girl, and she grows from that over the series. She has high expectations, both for others, and herself, and that can lead to her either making bad choices. She’s still figuring out who she is, and what teenager doesn’t have a selfish phase like that?

@basskitten808. 4 жыл бұрын
Exactly, claiming someone is a "bad person" just because they make a lot of silly mistakes, can be self-centered, etc is an overstatement. A bad person is someone who has bad intentions, treats everyone like shit, steals, abuses and murders. People who make these overstatements as if they're holier than thou, as if humans have to always be a certain way all of the time and share the same values is why cancel culture exists and that shit in itself is toxic.

I feel like Sharon was a normal girl that was dramatized at times because it’s a cartoon. Tv shows at this point were all about extreme high school girls who create their own conflict lol. At 13/14 you’re learning a whole different level of socialization. As a child you’re essentially told being good means good things will happen; however, you get older and realize that’s just not life - which is the cycle they clearly kept Sharon in.

I think it is a mixture. I can imagine why this show was started since i just realized alicia silverstone produced it. We are so used to the smart, down to earth girl being the protagonist that we forget about the 90s and early 2000s in which the dumb, chaotic, and very selfish girl was the protagonist. I like both having a protagonist that always makes mistakes and also one who makes none. I think th e former is fitted for kids shows while the latter is fitted for more older teenage or young adult shows, since "teenagers" aka preteens and early teens are the ones making all the dumb mistakes and having the WORST personalities ad being a terrible person to everyone. and later teens / young adults are often made to look dumb when they tebd to have their shit together. The word "teen" gets thrown around, thus, because everyone peaks at a different time. Some never do lol

Am I the only one thinking of the "Sharon's racist grandfather" episode like an episode showing how ignorant boomers will basically never change, so there's no point in arguing with them and that it's better to make change by confronting your own prejudice or helping your friends instead? I've definitely learned as an adult that some people will NEVER learn their lesson, or will certainly not change if you push them, so at some point all you can really do is say your piece and focus on things yourself and things you can actually change, just hoping they'll change some day.

well yall give yourselves too much credit as well because it wasnt just "canadian" shows -- a lot of american shows tackles these issues as well. they just DONT anymore because of karens. there were a lot of shows that were "groundbreaking" (as in, they werent groundbreaking at all because it was normal) in a LOT of american tv back in the 90s and 00s. It is just that channels became streamlined to a certain audience. You have cartoons being catered to the "random" ness of the early 2010s, (a lot was inspired by youtube and internet culture) which eventually gave rise to pointless plotlines and just garbage cartoon styles. Disney, which is mainyl popular for its live action shows, DID tackle a lot of these issues in the 90s and 00s. It's just that since disney is so goodie two shoes, it started becoming the popular channel for the karens to let hteir kids watch. so the second they have two SIDE CHARACTERS as gay parents, the internet goes absolutely BALLISTIC. So not only do you have cookie cutter recycled disney shows, but you have the completely random nickelodeon shows, both sitcoms and cartoons, having little plot.

I actually hated Sharon when I was a kid, and I was the same age as her when I watched the show. Even when it came to the animal rights stuff, it was still usually the result of her being selfish. For example, the episode where the fashion company stops using fur. She was almost willing to sabotage her best friend's possible future career because she didn't want her wearing and promoting fur. In the end, it was actually _Maria_ who convinced the company to change, not Sharon. Sharon was just annoying.

You know on the one hand, the "antagonist" girl in these kinds of shows/stories/movies/etc having no real solid reason to hate the protagonist is kind of annoying. But on the other hand, if they're 14-16 and they're really taking a look at living as a teenager... fuck man, you don't need a *reason* to mock and insult someone at that age. You can make up a reason as an excuse, that's just shitty teens being shitty teens. I was ostracized and mocked because when I was 12 I liked to read books. I was a nerd because I read freaking books. You don't need to be a certain ethnicity, or a minority, or a religion, shitty kids will *find* a reason to mock you.

I was SUCH a big fan of Braceface! Born in 94, so I was a bit younger than her character. For quite a while I'd have flashbacks of that episode about her period anytime I'd have cramps LOL. Canadian media was much more progressive at the time in terms of "polarizing" content. The character Snake from Degrassi was the first to swear on TV in Canada in the 80's, which didn't happen in the U.S until after that. Some other serious episodes I believe it didn't air in the US for quite some time, too, due to their topics (i.e abortion & teen pregnancy).

I'm not entirely sure why they claimed that, because it's pretty obvious Braceface was not that. But I remember CosmoGirl Magazine claiming the same thing about As Told By Ginger being a cartoon based off of Ginger Spice's (Geri Halliwell) childhood. For no other reason other than they're both redheads, and Ginger Foutley shared the same name as Geri's stage name.

19:03 Michael Cera was in a fair amount of Canadian cartoons when he was young. Remember the 2003 Berenstain Bears series? He voiced Brother Bear for the first two seasons! I imagine he was replaced after his voice started to change. He was also Todd from Wayside (That Canadian cartoon based on the old Wayside books created by Holes creator Louis Sachar) but only in the pilot. Another example was him being in the cartoon George Shrinks. And he also voiced the kid version of Olie’s uncle Little Gizmo from Rolie Polie Olie.

Oh man. I don't know why this was recommended to me, but I'm glad it was. As a Canadian, we have some real gems when it comes to our animation. ReBoot, 6teen, and, of course, Braceface. I think Braceface hasn't necessarily aged well, but it has aged with a certain charm that's uniquely Canadian. I would *highly* suggest you check out ReBoot if you haven't already. It was produced by Mainframe Entertainment (now defunct) and was one of the first CGI only shows. It's basically about the sprites and binomes that live in your computer, their daily lives, and the threats that lurk beyond the seas of information. The first season is fairly episodic, and the character development is pretty flat, but Seasons 2 and 3 go HARD. Especially season 3 when the US channels dropped it and the team was able to just have the freedom of the Canadian Television standards. Tony Jay was hired on to voice the antagonist, Megabyte, and others like Andrea Libman, Scott Macneil, and Long John Baldry do a superb job. Anyways, I'll shut up now, but check it out.

Mainframe are awesome! Transformers: Beast Machines, flawed is it may be, was a Western TV cartoon ahead of its time in terms of its philosophical themes (hope I don't sound too pretentious), let's not forget about their ambitious series Shadow Raiders.

I never understood why all the teen girls in these 2000s cartoons would be wearing belly/midriff shirts to school. Like no girl would wear that when lame school dress codes wouldn’t even let you get away with wearing a tank top. Remember the fingertips test?

Really? I assumed most schools had a dress code even if it wasn’t a uniform. No tank tops with the straps less than three finger widths, skirts can’t be shorter than the fingertips, no midriffs showing. Nothing in appropriate displayed on clothes. For guys they couldn’t have saggy pants that showed their underwear. There are some schools that even have rules on hair and jewelry. I’ve never heard of a school without a single dress code in any country before. That’s surprising.

finally someone talks about braceface! i always really liked it, it's one of my favorite childhood cartoons. it touches on subjects that are complicated and very brave for an animation and it does a great job of showing early teen life. i think sharon is a great written character- she does a lot of stupid things but she holds herself to the same high standard as everyone, she can be really annoying but she wants to do good things and change world for the better. and she always realizes her mistakes and fixes them. i think it's a fair representation of an idealistic, a little bit oblivious and childish girl- she's stuck up but not on purpose and her intentions are good. great video

“She’s sitting on a roof is this some kinda of white girl thing?” I’m a white girl and I can say that sitting on roofs is my favorite pass time. Rain snow, heat the roof is the place to be. I even throw parties on top of the roof but for some reason none of my friends want to come so party of one! Sure I fell off three times but hospitalization and a few broken bones won’t stop me now!

This is the show that turned me vegetarian when I was 5! I was sitting eating my fish fingers in the kitchen while my mum did made her food before I went to school and the episode where she goes to the meat factory or where ever it was and it just made it click that the food I ate was dead animals, so I put down my fish finger and said "mum! I don't want to eat animals anymore!" and she was just like "yeah sure, ok" because she's a good parent and I only slipped up once for a turkey twizzler at school and felt bad and never did it again. Until I re-found this show a year ago I always thought it was a Sebrina the teenage witch episode that did it because, blond girl cartoon. Sorry, it's just nice to see this niche show that had a big impact on me talked about and I got excited.

@@ImmaLittlePip riverdale isnt meant to be taken as a aserious teen show tho. its the CW. all their shows are based off of comics. 13 rw tho,... yikes. it was like they were trying to make a statement. it also became a dramam by the 2nd season tho. neither of them are meant to be "teen" shows, I dont think. Regardless, the "plot" is bad for a drama, for both

I really liked this show growing up. They talked about some real shit that teens worry about like fitting in, relationships, periods, racism, the problem with trying to look "too grown" too fast, hell they even had an openly gay character. Man, these early 2000 Canadian cartoons were the best! I love how flawed Sharon is and how she doesn't know who she is. She's 14 years old going through puberty trying to figure out who she is and I love it! I really liked the drama between her and Alden and how they went through an emotional rollercoaster. This show will forever hold a special place in my heart. ❤
