I'm so glad you brought up the background design because to me that's what holds this show's art together. Like it's great at establishing balance for animation; spacious and chaotic enough for the characters to go off in but still intentionally crafted to make everything pop visually in the foreground. Some of my favorite background design next to like My life as a teenage robot or Flapjack.

29:20 to 29:30 The reason why this show doesn’t have a unique variant of the 2000s Cartoon Network Studios logo is because this show was produced at a different studio. Most shows produced at CN Studios either had a custom animatic variant or a variant where a green laser makes the logo appear. Shows not produced at CN Studios like Kids Next Door or Ed, Edd, ‘n Eddy won’t have the logo.

According to Fandom Wiki for HI HI PUFFY AMIYUMI, Ami is 16 years old, and Yumi is 14 years old. However, the perceived age may be lower. It is also worth mentioning, that this show originates from Japan. Japanese culture is vastly different from American culture, so the rules may be different, and certain concepts slide more drastically.

Minus the character design I doubt P&S took any inspo from this. PAM is an American made cartoon to cash in on the Japanoplile era of the time and it shows. Panty and Stocking was made by Gainax who, alongside making many iconic anime’s, specialize in wild comical adult humor anime’s with better animation that usually lasts a single season such as Ebichu & the “Cutey Honey” Remake. The character design is the same but the plots, beats & content DO NOT COME CLOSE to resembling one another , So this statement is like saying “Hamtaro walked so Ebichu could run” on the surface, especially visual wise, you can see how it’s the same, but the two are WILDLY different when you look closer.

To think that thanks to this one cartoon, my young Japanophile self got totally submerged into not only JPOP and JROCK, but also the artistry behind the original themes and background music composed for media. Without this one weird cartoon involving the band that did the Teen Titans theme and some other bangers heard on the show, I wouldn't be as fully into L'Arc En Ciel, Hikaru Utada, DAOKO, Ayumi Hamasaki, or the music of idol anime like Love Live or Zombieland Saga. This weird nearly forgettable western cartoon made during the height of otakumania managed to hook me into a whole country's musical output and culture, while other band-toons were just giving me more of what I already knew and loved like Jem and the Holograms' glam rock or Dethklok's heavy metal.

Most KZbinrs my wife and I will watch separately in the background while we do our chores. We know how much work goes into constructing a good video essay and we’d love to give each channel the full attention it deserves, but there are simply too many talented creators out there and not enough time to watch them all without multi-tasking. But for your videos, we make time. We put everything else away and watch them like cinema, as that feels like the only appropriate way to appreciate the work you do. There’s something communal about your videos, something about the honesty and humor and insight with which you approach every topic that demands us to straighten up and pay attention. Every time we sit down to watch one of your videos together, we rob you of the extra view you’d get if we watched them separately. The point being, perhaps your videos only get half as many views as you have subscribers because they’re simply too wonderful to watch alone.

Ugh this fucking show was MY. SHIT. I took an interest in anime around 9 and this show was the one that started it all. Puffy is one of my all time favorite jpop bands even to this day. I was so deep into that weeb shit as a little kid that for months I attempted to eat all my meals with chopsticks. That must be my most painful childhood memory I have and it fuels me to hold this power. The power to make people cringe.

J-pop in the 2000s: Everyone is obsessed about me! Honestly kinda wish Turner still had the rights to air Pokémon on CN, it's just doesn't feel the same on Disney anymore. @@eggo3230 4Kids is the company that licensed and produced the English dubs of anime that aired on Kids WB and Fox Kids, but by the mid-2000s, the WB Network became The CW and Fox Kids became the FoxBox and both of their Saturday morning cartoon blocks got fused together into 4KidsTV on The CW, then it became Toonzai, then it got shit-canned.

I think that aside from the song sounding super soulful, it hits so hard bc as a kid watching a show u typically don't realize a show is over, and will become a nostalgic memory. Ur just watching a cartoon. (a lot of ppl don't have the "oh crap that was the last episode? that was the end??" moment until years later, it's such a real feeling)

Always thought this show had serious style. I don’t remember anything past the first season airing on YTV in Canada, but I think I need to seek those later episodes out. The little music videos they did were some of my favourite parts of the show, having some great imagery along with the songs they played. Good stuff! Also I keep forgetting What’s New Scooby Doo played one of Puffy’s songs, Urei (my personal favourite, alongside Planet Tokyo).

Fun fact: apparently (according to TV Tropes, so take this with a grain of salt) the show was so effective at selling their relationship that they initially disliked the show because they thought it was portraying them as romantically involved. Which, given the content of the actual show, and the fact that seven year old me shipped them before I knew they were based off real people (or even what shipping really was) I shippepd them very hard, I can't really blame them for thinking that.
Everybody STILL Hates Chris is MID! (jk lol it's great!)
