Eventually they decided to push that episode ahead and make it episode 97 even though that’s a better fit for 100.

These cartoon event things were actually a really big part of my experience with Avatar the Last Airbender. The premiere of the show, them getting to the north pole, Wan Shi Tong's library, Sozin's Comet, and of course the finale were all released as these hour, hour and a half long multi-episode specials and they were all built up as these huge events. There really wasn't anything else quite like following this show from the time it started and then having big moments in the story built up like once in a lifetime things. They kinda were that, specifically because they were built up like that. And I think maybe that's part of why there's never gonna be another experience like Last Airbender for me.

Definitely affixed my eyeballs to a fair share of these kinda events back in the day and then some. (I remember when I used to mark them on my calendar when I was in high school. April usually meant two things: a new SpongeBob special and that summer vacation was one month away!) My favorites were always the crossovers. I obsessed over the Jimmy Timmy Power Hours, I ate up Grim Adventures of the KND and all of its Dana Snyder-narrated kaiju promo hype, and I was always interested to see what bizarre new guest star would be dropping by to visit Lilo & Stitch that week. There's just always something cool about worlds and animation styles mixing for a brief moment. Also, shout-out to probably my favorite Halloween Special ever that would also kinda-sorta fit under this whole "event" banner, even though it's more of a pilot for a spin-off show that didn’t happen: UNDERFIST! STILL bitter that we didn't get more of that.
