On Metallica's And Justice For All album, the bass was turned down to virtually be non-existent. This is Metallica's first album after losing their original bassist (Cliff Burton) in a bus accident and replacing him with Jason Newsted. Jason's work on the new album was muted (for lack of a better word), probably because of Cliff's legacy and the pain the band was going through at the time.

Screwing Newstead was more of a hazing thing. His bass lines were pretty good but the band just treated him like a turd
@raoulduke83822 жыл бұрын
@@rogeryermaw Newstead wrote Blackened. More than a pretty good riff I'd say. And if you listen to the "And Justice for Jason" mix, you can hear how he is locked tighter than a straight jacket to Hetfield. On the other hand, I could never stand listening to him play Orion incorrectly live. He was an animal on stage though.
@RafaelCDet2 жыл бұрын
@@raoulduke8382 that's part of the problem, though. Hetfield was still going for that "10 bass, 0 mids, 10 treble" guitar tone, and Jason's bass lines being so similar to his guitar riffs is part of the reason why Jason was "muted" on the album. If the guitar sounds like a bass, you either hear the bass or you hear the guitar. Since the guitarist runs the band, turning down the bass so people could hear the guitar is the logical decision.

Not much a engineer can do with that. They could have carved up the eq's and give him more space for sure. A big part of the problem was Jason's note choices. The "Bass" you here on this album is James' Rhythm guitar, which is a normal 6-string guitar played with heavy palm-muting. The power chords (root/fifth) and the palm-muting is what gives the heavy "chugging" sound in metal. The actual 4-string "Bass guitar" is often unheard and has a less distorted tone, but gives a thicker background.

When you scoop the guitar sounds, cutting the mids and upping the bass and mids, you get a very dry and tight sound The problem is in the mix, the actual bass guitar frequency tends to get absorbed Jason Newsted who played bass on this album, played almost identical to the guitars, furthering that. People always say that the he got screwed on this album. The bass is there. Some good bass headphones let you hear it better

You guys finally did it. I've got a special place in my heart for AJFA. This is the song that made me decide as a kid I was gonna actually play the drums. I'm not sure why it was this track and not some of the more obvious or catchy ones. I think because for a know-nothing kid who is admiring drummers, this track kinda has everything......simple stuff in the intro, good backbeats, cool fills. I joined school band for years playing snare drum to show my parents I was serious. I saved a little bit of money here and there. I finally got my first crappy drum kit when I was 13. I spent hours after school and entire weekends blistering my fingers working through each little section of this track, playing it up to there, then moving on to the next, learning how to cheat those double bass parts by playing between the single kick and floor tom. I dont even know many hours I put in teaching my body to play this (and Hanger 18) start to finish but I know it was the better part of a year when I finally nailed AJFA all the way through and could do it well. I felt like a god damn champion. My mother absolutely despises this song to this day LMAO. I quit school band and started playing in metal bands a year and change after and I'm still playing to this day 30 years later. It's kinda hilarious to hear Metallica themselves talk about not wanting to ever play this song again live, but I'm always gonna fondly remember what my own struggle to learn it did for me.

yeah, there is bass guitar it's just mixed well with the guitars, these guys were so tight that they could mix it like this. the guitars mixed the way they are gives it that heavy mid bass drone sound with the mix. everyone says they mixed jason out on purpose, but they recorded the garage days cover album before this album, and it is mixed like the black album where the bass guitar is obviously present. either way sounds fine to me and i hear the bass guitar when it needs to be heard. just me, though.

This album is notorious for having the bass guitars turned almost all the way down. What Lex is hearing are two guitars harmonizing the riffs (one playing lower notes). Best Metallica bass songs: Orion, My Friend of Misery, Hero of the Day (just my opinion)

First off love this Album, my favorite Metallic album. When this came out my buddy had a slammed 65 bug with twin 12” Vega s, he listened to a ton of Rap and I had him play this in his system and it hit hard!! He loved it. Great album but no bass. Lars made the producer pretty much remove all of the bass. This was the first time Jason Usted played bass for Metallica, after Cliff Burton passed away. There was a little bit hostility towards the new member. Jason took it on the chin and played with the band almost 2 full decades after so no hard feelings.

Jason Newsted wrote the best song on this Album by far with Blackened, and I'd would take Jason's old band Flotsam and Jetsam album Doomsday for the Deceiver, over this album or any of the next few Metallica albums, sure some of the lyrics are silly, but the music/songs is/are great.

"this is a very bass heavy song" the bass in this song was turned down to the point that you can't here it when they mixed the album which is a shame because Jason killed it on the bass in the studio.

James' guitar sound gave it bass. Jason only followed the guitar anyway. Most metal bass playing is unnoticeable. I consider it metal's greatest weakness.
@SaturnusDK2 жыл бұрын
I've heard this argument a million times before but if you listen to the "alternative bass" version, it's not surprising why they buried the bass in the mix. It adds nothing except for a few places. In fact, I find it distracts from the riffs. But where the bass does add something, it's clearly there.
