For a lot of us, the instruments, the melody, harmony, and dynamics, etc, is where most the emotion is in music. The lyrics are what usually don't matter to us. You can usually replace the words and not make any difference in the listening experience. I think it's often that way for metal, prog, jazz, and classical. Other genres like folk and rap prioritize different elements, and vocals are more important in them. Another factor is whether a genre's audience includes a lot of musicians, themselves. I think metal has a lot of fans who play instruments themselves and mostly want to hear instruments.

I’m the same way. People say this song or that song because of the lyrics, but they’re secondary for me. I guess that’s why I’m into instrumental music like classical and jazz. I enjoy good MUSIC, the lyrics aren’t what I focus on.

As I listened to more music and learned more about music I found other guitarists that I thought were slightly better in different ways. Tone, difficult chord shapes, innovation in song building, rhythm (there is a great part in Some Kind of Monster where James is trying to get Kirk to play a specific rhythm section and he can't get it, so they had to simplify it). Make no mistake that even after that Kirk is still one of my favorites, and always will be.

The solos are by Kirk (lead guitar) and Cliff (bass guitar). The bridge and the third "gtr solo" is Cliff's bass guitar. Most songs are the kind that it’s like surfing, your putting all your energy into staying right with the song like on the edge of the wave. And some instrumentals are like that too when they have a single instrument voice that cuts through the other instruments to delivery a melody and there are times in Orion where the guitar or bass does that too but for the most part it is intended to be an experience of immersion. You just lay back in the ocean of music and let it flow around you. And the little interludes where one instrument cuts through are just currents in the water and you let them take you where they will. With pretty much any Metallica song, because the song is rooted in the repeating riff I find I can mentally decide to follow the lyric and stay on the edge of the song or let myself slip back into the music and let it flow over me. Such a talented band.

watching Lex's reaction to all heavy metal music is pure diamond

It's funny to watch Brad always staring at the monitor and reading lyrics while Lex is really rockin and enjoying the music. She has a broader taste in music than he does. He must be lost not having anything to read in this song

Lex always does it right. She would be the hot black chick at CBGBs that even skinheads ask her out. Culturally the net has made people listen to music that they would not normally listen too. And I got Bossa Nova collection too prove it. She just gets its it. Loosen up a bit Brad

Love listening to that Bass growling at the start. Ahh the memories of 1986 when my friend walked into my room one day and asked me what I was listening to on my headphones. I said "this!" and handed my headphones and he was blown away.

Eres afortunado de tener una familia y una mujer tan hermosa. Ella es de mi familia musical. Ella cierra sus ojos y sólo escucha lo que dice cada instrumento y la realidad de letra

You're right about Kirk. Although it's undeniable that he's technically very good and a pretty fast guitar player, he's also known for not having a lot of feeling in his playing.

What? 😆 His solos are his feelings. And he's a great story teller within the song.

Watching Lex hear/feel that sweet melody sent chills down my spine the entire time. These reaction videos are brilliant; they make me feel like I’m listening for the first time too; only difference is I know when the good parts are coming up!

I loved that glance Brad gave Lex like 15 seconds before the end. Was like "Do you understand any of this?" Then he sees her with her eyes closed, jamming out, and is like "Yeah, I guess she does. What else is new?"

Love your guys view and Lex's love of Metallica. To live is to die is a major underrated instrumental. It was Cliff Burtons final opus and was finished and dedicated to him in his honor. The band almost never plays it live.

man i fucking love that song so much, it blows my mind how beautiful structured it is. it literally feels like a trip with a rocketship to the Orions belt, first the fade in and beginning riff as you check all the instruments from the ship an prepare for take off. then the heavy ass chorus riff plus first solo, as you start and rip trough earth's atmosphere everything is loud and vibrates and then all of a sudden a moment of silence... followed by Cliff burtons baseline and the synchronised harmony solos as you now entered space with no gravity.. then the 3 solo and burtons bass solo kicks in, all of a sudden the instruments are going crazy, astroids and space trash everywhere! then back to the heavy riff again with a fade out letting us in complete darkness not knowing if they ever gonna make it to Orion safely... just wow.. and all that story without telling me a single word this is the real power of music.
