@@ThaiThom yeah, I know that. And he’s playing an awesome countermelody to the guitar parts!. I was referring to Hetfield taking the melody on the first slow solo and Hammet on the harmony part. Almost reminds me of the approach the Eagles took to the Hotel California solo, but they fir it to this song.

For a lot of us, the instruments, the melody, harmony, and dynamics, etc, is where most the emotion is in music. The lyrics are what usually don't matter to us. You can usually replace the words and not make any difference in the listening experience. I think it's often that way for metal, prog, jazz, and classical. Other genres like folk and rap prioritize different elements, and vocals are more important in them. Another factor is whether a genre's audience includes a lot of musicians, themselves. I think metal has a lot of fans who play instruments themselves and mostly want to hear instruments.

I’m the same way. People say this song or that song because of the lyrics, but they’re secondary for me. I guess that’s why I’m into instrumental music like classical and jazz. I enjoy good MUSIC, the lyrics aren’t what I focus on.

@Ororo Munroe Yes you are correct. In times past, many were much younger when great accomplishments were done. However, these days many people in their 30s do not have a clue and are aimlessly wandering about unable to move away from their parents, hold down a job, raise a family, take on adult responsibilities, plan for their future and carry on a meaningful conversation, so I think alot of people would be a little surprised at their ages.

@@playermartin286 Kirk isn’t the rhythm guitarist and is credited for a 1/3 of metallicas discography, most of it being in their 80’s and 90’s songs. Not saying James isn’t amazing or a guitar god, Kirk is just under appreciated for what he’s done for Metallica. I mean listen to any master of puppets recent live performance, Kirk is the one keeping the rhythm going when James is more focused on singing and interacting with the crowd. Not to mention Kirk wrote the riff for the verse of master of puppets. It’s stupid to not call him a legend for what he’s done in Metallica and what he’s done for the inspiration he’s brought to many young guitarists.

@@playermartin286 You not liking Kirks playing is probably the reason for why you find the solos low points. I disagree, solos like One or Fade to Black are really well written and fit the songs perfectly. Most Metallica solos do in my opinion. It’s ok to not like Kirk but you’re not really bringing up any valuable points on your dislike for kirks playing.

@@playermartin286 and yes I agree, James has a very precise way of playing, but it’s not like kirk’s playing hasn’t been recorded. As a follow-up to Orion, I recommend you give "To Live Is To Die" from Metallica. It was one of the last pieces of music that the late Cliff Burton worked on before his untimely passing. While the majority of Metallica's discography is something one experiences with "To Live Is To Die" one goes beyond experiencing it to a point where they feel it. From a music perspective "To Live Is To Die" is perhaps one of the best things Metallica has ever recorded.

@My Dixie Wrecked I agree. Kirk fits perfectly with thrash and Metallica. Kirk has always been one of my favorites, and when I started listening to music I couldn't imagine a more talented guitarist. As I listened to more music and learned more about music I found other guitarists that I thought were slightly better in different ways. Tone, difficult chord shapes, innovation in song building, rhythm (there is a great part in Some Kind of Monster where James is trying to get Kirk to play a specific rhythm section and he can't get it, so they had to simplify it). Make no mistake that even after that Kirk is still one of my favorites, and always will be.

@My Dixie Wrecked ya there are a lot of lesser known guitarists that brought something innovative to the world, and they don't always get their due. I always thought Alex Lifeson and Peter Green should be better known. In the guitarists world they are, but not big names to broader audiences.

I was in my room once jamming to Metallica Master of Puppets. My roommate walked in. He didn't know Metal at all. He listened to Christian rock. So there I am jamming. Then they get to the slow part in the middle. Then when they started jamming again, he asked "Didn't they just do this song?" I said "Still the same song. Just a different---." I stammered for a moment trying to think of a word, and came up with "---movement. " That's the moment when I realized Metalica needed to play with a symphony someday. And several years later, they did!😁😜

This song is primarily written and driven by the original bass player, young prodigy and innovator Cliff Burton, who tragically died in a bus crash while touring this album in 1986. There are several guitar leads that are actually played on bass. An emotional masterpiece and possibly my favorite Metallica song. I always wished there were another 5 minutes.
@ThaiThom

The solos are by Kirk (lead guitar) and Cliff (bass guitar). The bridge and the third "gtr solo" is Cliff's bass guitar. Cliff Burton (2/10/62 - 9/27/86 R.I.P.) was a genius and Metallica would not have made it without him. Burton-era Metallica (read: 1980s Metallica) is the real Metallica. "Orion" is a great choice. And yes, Kirk Hammett is a guitar Jedi and he does not get enough love.

@@aaronmullenix5409 Well then, very few people are as good at playing guitar as you are. Most aspiring beginner guitarists would need years to learn how to play like Kirk Hammett. Most would give up before they got close to that point. Sure, there are always exceptions but most would have a hard time even learning Hetfield's parts, never mind Hammett's.

@@ericjauregui3089 Some of his lyric interpretations are spot on, for that I give him credit, but I think his downfall is sitting next to someone who has the hype and excitement FOR the song. He shows no emotion, looks confused when listening to complex time changes and face melting solos, has very awkward pause moments that are absolute kill joys.. I mean, who in their right would pause during a guitar solo?.... Box of Rocks Brad.....that’s who...He is a real nice guy...but he’s a swing and a miss when it comes to Rock and Metal. Lex smiles, shows interest, and just grooves on songs.....

Most songs are the kind that it’s like surfing, your putting all your energy into staying right with the song like on the edge of the wave. And some instrumentals are like that too when they have a single instrument voice that cuts through the other instruments to delivery a melody and there are times in Orion where the guitar or bass does that too but for the most part it is intended to be an experience of immersion. You just lay back in the ocean of music and let it flow around you. And the little interludes where one instrument cuts through are just currents in the water and you let them take you where they will. With pretty much any Metallica song, because the song is rooted in the repeating riff I find I can mentally decide to follow the lyric and stay on the edge of the song or let myself slip back into the music and let it flow over me. Such a talented band.

man i fucking love that song so much, it blows my mind how beautiful structured it is. it literally feels like a trip with a rocketship to the Orions belt, first the fade in and beginning riff as you check all the instruments from the ship an prepare for take off. then the heavy ass chorus riff plus first solo, as you start and rip trough earth's atmosphere everything is loud and vibrates and then all of a sudden a moment of silence... followed by Cliff burtons baseline and the synchronised harmony solos as you now entered space with no gravity.. then the 3 solo and burtons bass solo kicks in, all of a sudden the instruments are going crazy, astroids and space trash everywhere! then back to the heavy riff again with a fade out letting us in complete darkness not knowing if they ever gonna make it to Orion safely... just wow.. and all that story without telling me a single word this is the real power of music.
