For everyone ripping her for saying it's bass heavy, she obviously means actual bass frequencies - not bass guitar. There is a fuck tonne of low end on the guitars, so she is kinda right

In this episode of Brad & Lex, beautiful guitar harmonies start the fire that becomes full fledge, as dark syncopated riffs with drums scorch the first layer off the surface exposing the couple to the harshness of this world Metallica has them in. Firstly stabilizing Brad's signature "side to side sway" while leading Lex to her "metal bobble bop".

On Metallica's And Justice For All album, the bass was turned down to virtually be non-existent. This is Metallica's first album after losing their original bassist (Cliff Burton) in a bus accident and replacing him with Jason Newsted. Jason's work on the new album was muted (for lack of a better word), probably because of Cliff's legacy and the pain the band was going through at the time.

@@rogeryermaw Newstead wrote Blackened. More than a pretty good riff I'd say. And if you listen to the "And Justice for Jason" mix, you can hear how he is locked tighter than a straight jacket to Hetfield. On the other hand, I could never stand listening to him play Orion incorrectly live. He was an animal on stage though.
@RafaelCDet
@RafaelCDet 2 жыл бұрын
@@raoulduke8382 that's part of the problem, though. Hetfield was still going for that "10 bass, 0 mids, 10 treble" guitar tone, and Jason's bass lines being so similar to his guitar riffs is part of the reason why Jason was "muted" on the album. If the guitar sounds like a bass, you either hear the bass or you hear the guitar. Since the guitarist runs the band, turning down the bass so people could hear the guitar is the logical decision.

@@jack-of-all-trades1234 Definitely some truth by Lars' own admission. However. Jason is not completely innocent here. His playing for a lot of the album is basically playing in unison with James. Not much a engineer can do with that. They could have carved up the eq's and give him more space for sure. A big part of the problem was Jason's note choices. Metallica was used to a bass guitar that ran up and down fret board. Jason later honed his chops live and became a better bassist for the Black Album. Just my honest opinion.

@@ericmclaughlin73 I agree completely. Listening to some of the "alternative" versions it's quite clear why the bass is buried in the mix. It's more of a distraction from the riffs and adds little of value overall. Where the bass does add something, it's clearly present in the mix.

The "Bass" you here on this album is James' Rhythm guitar, which is a normal 6-string guitar played with heavy palm-muting. The power chords (root/fifth) and the palm-muting is what gives the heavy "chugging" sound in metal. The actual 4-string "Bass guitar" is often unheard and has a less distorted tone, but gives a thicker background.
