#7 best selling album of 1995 and #65 for the 90s. Hit #1 in 3 countries and was top 3 in 10. Over 13.5 million confirmed sales. Not bad for a band whose first two albums sold less than 500k copies combined.

I miss this No Doubt so much. They were the shining light of third wave ska, somehow blending the fun of Californian punk into an already beautifully mashed up Anglo-caribbean sound. And Gwen, when she was the cool, punky Anaheim girl next door. She went all Hollywood a few years after this era, all high fashion and hip-hop infused pop. Nothing wrong with it, but not the Gwen Stefani us 90s teens grew up with. At least this album still captures the good times like few others can. ☺️

I don’t know if I’d put them “above” the Mighty Mighty Bosstones, Reel Big Fish, the Aquabats, Goldfinger, etc. in the 3rd wave. Don’t get me wrong…love No Doubt (this is my fav song)…but their departure from the ska sound started with this (their best) album.

@@gregclarke2183 Idk if I'd ever say they were "above" those other bands, but they most definitely outsold them several times over. Nobody brought it to the mainstream (for better or worse) like No Doubt. That's just a simple fact. Also, I'd wager that their album "Rock Steady" dived HARD into their ska/reggaeton/dancehall roots throughout the entire album, unlike most of their other albums (including Tragic Kingdom) where they interspersed that ska sound across a handful of songs through the album, but not to the degree that Rock Steady did.

No Doubt suggestions: "Hella Good", "Hey Baby", "New", "Ex-Girlfriend" and "It's My Life" (which is a cover of Talk Talk's). They are a Ska band but the Tragic Kingdom did have to put some pop in it. Their first 2 albums and their album Rocksteady took it right back to their roots though. Plus they recorded Rocksteady in Jamaica so it really has that Reggae flavor in it. I love No Doubt. I've listened to them since the beginning. Fun facts: the guy watching the band at the beginning and end of the video is Gwen's brother Eric Stefani who co-founded the band with John Spence, may he rest in peace. This song was co-written between Gwen and Tony Kanal (bassist). At the time Gwen and Tony were a couple and Gwen was in the bathroom with food poisoning so Tony was sitting in the hall and starting singing the hook for this song to help her feel better LOL.

Gwen basically wrote all the songs on Tragic Kingdom about her break up with the bass player(I think his name is Tony Kanan). It was a massive hit. Every girl growing up in the 90s had this album. I'll never forget a girl I was off and on with singing "Don't Speak" to me drunk off her ass and changing the words saying I still loved another girl.....ahh the 90s.....back when I had more girls than time. It sucks getting old. You really start noticing that they don't even look at you anymore.😔

Fun Fact: Gwen Stefani was dating Tony Kanal (Her band ate - The guy with the buzz cut) Stefani's first major public relationship was with Kanal, her bandmate from No Doubt. They dated from 1987 until 1994, at which point Kanal ended the relationship - which nearly ended the band, too, according to a 2004 Newsweek article. "I was completely passive, no goals. I was in love with Tony and just happy to be in the band. Then there was three years writing in our garage until [the 1995 album] Tragic Kingdom came out," Stefani told the magazine. During their relationship, Stefani told The Guardian, she was less concerned with her career in music and more about the future of their romance. "All I ever did was look at Tony and pray that God would let me have a baby with him." The band did survive their breakup, and they continued performing together until the band went on hiatus in 2015.

For once, you guys don't get it. It's a meshing of ska and new wave. Very few other bands did this in the mid-'90s, although there were MANY revival ska bands at that time. "Some people loved it, others hated it, mixed reviews." That could be said for ANY of the songs yall have reacted to! Not just this one. And on the live stream, many actually liked this song and group. It was mainly the older people who complained (almost always does with '90s and '00s music anyways, just ignore them) or music snobs. No Doubt was highly popular during the '90s and '00s. A very good band (they weren't just there as yall said). Its definetely ska/reggae influenced. Listen to the horns and beat! And the good bass guitars, beat. And this is called ska-punk. Very popular during the '90s and '00s (also people who listened to other genres). Ska-punk is very upbeat and danceable. Huge on the westcoast like California which feel good music of punk rock (and hip hop too) during the '90s and '00s to offset the sad sounds of grunge and post-grunge up north in Oregon and Washington (Seattle), Pacific Northwest. Ska-punk also big in the UK and east coast like NYC. No Doubt was ska/reggae with horns and new wave punk synthesizers, dance-punk. Alt rock. Its ska/reggae (Caribbean music and horns) mixed with punk rock music. That's why it sounded islandy. Punks and ska/reggae bands hung out and influenced each others music a lot back in the days (played at same underground clubs and audiences). They were influenced by Missing Persons (80s new wave group) , one of their influences. Check out more of Missing Persons. Gwen Stefani (pretty and talented) was a punk rocker before the pop rap music she was doing after the mid 2000s. Check out more No Doubt videos! They had tons of hits.

The whole Tragic Kingdom album was influenced by 80s new wave and a style of music called ska. Ska is pretty much a more rock based variation of reggae. Lyrically, a good portion of the album was about the breakup between Gwen and the bassist named Tony. They were a couple for a number of years. I kind of compare the album as a 90s version of the 70s classic Fleetwood Mac Rumours album. Only difference is that Tragic Kingdom focuses on just one breakup, while Rumours dealt with multiple breakups. If you haven't checked any songs from Rumours, you really should. Don't Stop, Songbird, Gold Dust Woman, The Chain.

Gwen has another great voice. This is of course before her marriage to. No Doubt's influence does seem to be from Caribbean sounds. If you listen to them you get that vibe.

The band were fans of The Specials....that's why Terry Hall is in the video. Yes Gwen was/is way more successful as a solo act, but personally, I prefer the group's sound over Gwen singing about being Hallaback Girl.

Listen to the man who produced their big album, Matthew Wilder, to hear the basis of the sound. His song 'Break My Stride' was a charted release when I was a kid, and it holds up today.

Wow, that's unnecessarily rude. She's still a strong singer even if you preferred her older songs. But being hateful and rude about it is completely uncalled for.

@@ninja_tony sorry but going from meaningful songs like Just a Girl and Spiderwebs to teaching people how to spell bananas is not a good change at all. I'm sure she probably has more meaningful solo songs than that but sorry none of what I have heard has been good at all.
