Lead singer, Michael Hutchence had just started seeing Kylie Minogue. She dyed her hair and he asked her what colour and she replied 'Suicide Blonde'. The instrument was a harmonica, it was a sample played by Charlie Musselwhite. INXS never really got pigeonholed, they created their own genre often described as 'white funk'

I had the great privilege of meeting INXS before a show they played on the "X" tour in the early 1990s. All of those guys were so wonderful, and the late Michael Hutchence (lead singer) managed to be at once the ultra-cool rock star and a down-to-earth and very approachable human being. I went to the show as a college student, and he treated my date and I as though he had come to see us. And I was just a guy who had won backstage passes from the local radio station. My date was a huge INXS fan, and I remember that he made her feel so very special without false flattery and without being creepy. We got a genuine sense that he really appreciated everyone that came to the show as fans. I will always treasure the memory of that show, and the band was fantastic in concert as well. They put on a great concert.

Suicide Blonde is the hair color that Kylie Minogue had for a movie role, while she was dating Michael. Michael being Michael, he wrote a song about it. He also had a great night of partying in a club one night and scribbled "Elegantly Wasted" on a napkin. That is also a song!

Then while recording Elegantly Wasted, INXS was insulted by Oasis, so he re-recorded the chorus without the other band member's knowledge from "I'm Elegantly Wasted" to "I'm Better than Oasis". Cue original mic drop.

One of my favourite bands, I discovered their music early 80’s and was lucky to see them twice. Even though I'm more of a metalhead these days, INXS is always my feelgood go-to when I need a HUGE pick-me-up, simple songs like 'Shine Like it Does' always leave me feeling 6'2" again when I've been down in the dumps, INXS are SO much more than the easy-going lover's rock troupe that they've been unfairly tarnished with.

Didn't matter what your favorite genre of music was in the 80s, just about everyone liked INXS. INXS was technically considered a New Wave band though they drew inspiration from many other genres such as punk, funk, acid house and blues. The instrument Lex questioned in the beginning and throughout is called a "blues harp". Its is a special type of harmonica.

You know they're from Australia, and hit it big internationally in the late '80s thru the '90s, until Michael Hutchence overdosed and they were never the same after. A 'Suicide Blonde' is a girl who did a home peroxide job - they can be OK, or burn the scalp out with no warning. That sound was from a harmonica that had some 'Tremelo' fed thru the amplifier, or possibly 'Vibrato'. These guys were aces in the '90s. If you haven't already, try WHAT YOU NEED, DISAPPEAR, BEAUTIFUL GIRL, and NEW SENSATION.
@aliarobinson6617 Жыл бұрын
michael didn't overdose. He hanged himself in a sydney hotel room due to worries over losing custody of his daughter. bob geldof, paula yates, and the british press put the rope around that sensitive soul's neck. it might as well have been murder.
@onbedoeldekut15152 жыл бұрын
Back in the oooooooolllld days (before modern hair dyes/bleaches), the methods used to lighten hair were often destructive in the long run, causing hair follicles to thin, weaken and die. This led to the term 'suicide blonde'. I've always taken the song to be about 'someone' who dyed their hair and sought to be part of a crowd/someone's lover. At the time, he was either seeing Kylie Minogue or Paula Yates. You might like to watch the interview Michael Hutchence did with Paula (she was a host of The Big Breakfast, a morning show but for younger audience than is the norm), they essentially fell in love DURING THE INTERVIEW, he left Kylie, and the rest is both history and tragedy.

My first concert… INXS in Mackay Queensland, part of the “Listen Like Thieves” tour. After “The Swing,” expectations were high. They didn’t disappoint. Here in LA, you can visit Michael Hutchence at Forest Lawn Hollywood Hills. His ashes were split three ways: his mother, his father, and Paula Yates. His father’s portion were scattered at sea off Sydney. Yates’ is probably in Bob Geldoff’s basement (who knows). His mother’s portion was buried at FLHH, for “the American fans.”

Someone commented on the Thompson Twins reaction that 1984 was the nadir of New Music - some would argue that it was the apex. Bands who'd been around a while - like INXS, Duran Duran, Spandau Ballet, Thompson Twins, Tears for Fears, B-52's, Oingo Boing and even U2 - would all develop more commercial sounds at about this time. While most would enjoy commercial success most of their original fans would have lost interest at about this time as newer music (Pre-Grunge: The Pixies, Sonic Youth, Red Hot Chili Peppers) was just about to emerge. If you wish to react to New Wave groups from the 80's is probably best to listen to songs that came out on earlier albums before 1984/85.
