How original, going with the deep cuts huh? Reaction comments stink. 80% " you gotta check out " #1 biggest single, #2 biggest single, #3 biggest single." Thank God bc they never could have found those independently! 10% " the songs about...." which are almost all wrong and 10% lies about meeting the artists, being at every concert, how they were inspired to do something crazy bc of the song or reiterating points that are common knowledge as if they're going into some deep like. The best is 20 year olds posting about something like Nirvana and how " they changed the world overnight and it changed their life personally...." blah blah, even though the song/album were released 10+ years before they were born. Then argue with people like me, who actually lived it, about Nirvana, Pac, Eazy, Pantera, etc. Bleck

These guys came seemingly out of nowhere with their debut album "Cracked Rear View" in 1994 (though they'd been plugging away as a regional bar band since 1986) and just jumped to the top of the US music scene. They really didn't sound like anybody else getting airplay at the time; a lot of people criticized the syrupy sweetness of their songs though, angst filled grunge being the rock flavor of the day. The lead vocalist, Darius Rucker, went on to a successful country music career as a solo artist.

"It's like Grunge and Country had a baby/" Actually, the black dude is Darius Rucker, and he absolutely transitioned into doing Country music I think in the mid 00's. Darrius Rucker is pure country today here in Nashville. What you find with country artists is that only the best, purest voices make it in country as you do not have all the loud sounds from the other instruments hiding a bad voice. His voice is extremely unique and for one am glad he made the transition. You can either hate or love country but they have the best pure singing talent overall...not even close.

The way these bands form is there is no plan. Some musicians get together who have various influences and do what they do . When there blend develops they come up with their own sound. Sometimes you can hear influences but the most successful bands seem to just let it flow. Bands that try to strategies tend to vaporize fairly soon. That's why they call it art and not science. Hootie and the Blowfish checks all the boxes.

Darius Rucker has a fabulous voice sounding dramatic, powerful and serious, yes it could easily be a grunge voice. But it is combined with more lighthearted music arrangements and melody, compared to distorted guitars that typify Seattle style grunge. On top of that their 1994 debut album was filled with quality and great hit songs, some of them with easy going lyrics like "hold my Hand", some with quite serious lyrics like "let her cry" which is a song about drug addition. The band was formed in Macon, Georgia. What Seattle, Washington went through in the early 90's, a sudden explosion of talented artists hitting the scene, all from that area, Macon, Georgia went through the same thing 4-5 years earlier with bands like R.E.M., The Indigo Girls and Hootie and the Blowfish to mention a few. But Darius Rucker's true inclination was to make country music and ultimately he went on his own to do just that and is doing it successfully.

@@JV44HeinzBar Okay, I stand corrected, I wonder why I always thought they were from Macon. I lived in Columbia myself for two years in 1984, great memories of USC and Yesterdays in 5 point.

Hootie was HUGE in the early 90s. Darius Rucker has amazing pipes. Some other great hits: "Only Wanna Be With You" , "Time" , "I Go Blind" , "I Will Wait" , "Let Her Cry" , and if you wanna hear Hootie sounding the most country they ever sounded, check out "Running From An Angel"

You literally couldn't turn on the radio in 1995 without hearing either this song or one of the other hits off "Cracked Rear View". Great stuff!

As others mentioned, they met in college at the University of SC. I live in upstate SC. Before they made it big, I remember getting one of their promotional CDs at a local Belk department store. I was reluctant to listen to it but I was so glad I did. My friends and I loved it. And even though they came from UofSC (Clemson's rival), this Clemson girl is a big fan of both Hootie and the Blowfish and Darius Rucker as a solo artist.

Quintessential college rock(ish) from the early 90's... being a child of the 80's I have to admit this was a really good time for music.

That my friends is 90’s classic rock, a fusion of all that came before it with the 90’s contemporary sound. They were a underrated and great sounding band.

“If grunge and country had a baby,” yup. Darius Rucker (lead singer) became a country star. Someone in junior high (1998-2000) asked me what my favorite band was. I said Hootie and the Blowfish. *** This was before I discovered rock. Hootie and the Blowfish certainly isn’t my favorite band now (RIP Chris Cornell), but I will always love their music.

I played on the same bill as them back in the late 80s early 90s at a bar called Rockafellas and rehearsed at the Sumter st warehouses in Columbia SC, where they and many different bands rehearsed at the time. I heard that songs many times before it ever became a hit. Good Times!

I’ve seen them in Charleston, SC a couple of times at their Hootie Home grown benefit concerts to get kids school supplies. Darius lives/is from Charleston and it shows up in a lot of his videos. The guitarist does some work at the College of Charleston and local music work. It’s not unusual to see them. Darrell Hall also moved in a few years ago and Bill Murray is a part time local. Anyways, Darius tells a little story about how he, the bassist and guitarist are looking for and auditioning drummers. This guy comes in, he’s a collegiate soccer player, and he has this song, Hold My Hand, written. The guys hear it and decide they need him in the band. Serendipity. And, wow, Darius can still sing. The whole crowd knows all the songs. Great local event.
