Back in the day there was less concern about genre. People just made music, people listened to the music, people enjoyed the music. There wasn't a thousand genres with their tribal fandoms. It was a better time.

Also, no internet, no MtV, the only image you saw, was the album covers and occasional TV appearances, so you had to judge on sound and music not on appearances, and what the internet told you they did behind closed doors, was a great time.

British bands from the 60s-70s are very diverse in their sound. Queen went from Rock to combining it with a touch of classical music and opera, then they go to rock/disco etc. Beatles went from 50s style rock n roll to ballads to a whole different music that started the whole modern avant garde era with their psychedelic music. i think they're able to do so because of their talent surely and more freedom from their music labels. I think musician nowadays especially those in the pop industry are put in a box and told to make only this or that kind of music

He’s got a great dynamic range. Not only can he go low to high but he can go gentle to strong. Smooth to growly. Roger and Brian both have amazing voice and complement Freddie. Their song composition is more like theatre. It moves around a stage - left to right, up and down and very visually dramatic. In some ways Queen has one song. Each song you listen to is just a different part of it just like bohemian rhapsody, my fair Queen, it’s a hard life, innuendo and black Queen are all multiple songs put together - but you did hit the nail on the head - they defy a category they are their own category.

I was too young to buy music in their "imperious" phase, but I remember being thrilled and shocked when my brother came home with Queen's Greatest Hits, from 1981. The band were kind of dangerous. Freddie was wonderful, but had this edge of transgression and sometimes, menace.

Great reaction guys! This song specifically is a Glam or art rock song, it was very popular in the first half of the 70's, in Britain. Men wore make-up and women's clothing. Queen were not really a Glam rock band at the time, they were a progressive, hard rock and metal band at the time. Later on they added more different styles. This was Queen's first big hit in America. Older Rock n Roll had loads of piano. You guys should check out their song Liar, it is one of their progressive rock songs from that era.

@@roverwaters3875 Classic rock is not a genre of music, it is an American radio station format. The term only came into existence around 1981. In 1974 Killer Queen was a Glam rock song. In the early 70’s you had Psychedelic rock, Folk, Glam Rock, Progressive Rock and Hard Rock. Hard Rock developed as a term to create a divide from Psychedelic Rock, because it was heavier and harder. Metal did not exist as a genre but people were starting to use the term.

Killer Queen was the band’s first big hit. They were all young and were still developing their style. This was known as a combination of “Progressive (prog) rock and Glamorous (glam) rock. Freddie’s hair was long, but it was on the frizzy side. He wore that fox coat all the time and was inseparable from his hairbrush. They were in a terrible management contract and were living on very little money. In later years he either got his hair straightened or used a curling iron to keep it smooth. The song is about a high class call girl.

One of the things I loved Freddie Mercury for is that he was unapologetically true to himself, charming, down to earth, and one of the best singer/songwriters of his time ❤ I was in adolescence and early teens when Queen was pumping out hit after hit-- Bohemian Rhapsody, We Will Rock You/We Are The Champions, Killer Queen...these songs are intertwined with my childhood and teen years and always evoke such strong feelings of nostalgia.

He could sing anything and their catalogue includes some quite heavy songs, prog rock, some funky songs, ballads, and probably many other things. Try some early Queen live in concert - In the Lap of the Gods 1975 Hammersmith. For a heavier sound, try Liar from 1974 at the Rainbow. Queen are the most versatile band of all time. They could do it all, hard rock, soft rock, ballads, everything. Queen are the first band I started listening to & when you have 4 members of a band that have different elements & bring it all together into one then that's when you have a very special band. That video was from 1974 but then you listen to them from 1984 it's like listening to another band. Queen evolved with each album over tiime but one thing that never changed is that they made great music.

This is one of my favorite songs and an earlier Queen song, possibly their second hit, certainly that was the case in the US. Long hair was the way of the world of rock back then as was the strange costuming. Queen was a rock band but they certainly had their own brand of rock. All four of them wrote number 1 songs and each of them liked different types of music so you will hear a bit of everything from Queen. If you have not yet listened to it, my very favorite live performance by Queen EVER is White Queen live at Odeon, Hammersmith 1975. The vocals will give you goosebumps and the instrumental portion of the song is simply put, outstandingly amazing, total perfection. You will not be disappointed. Freddie said that Killer Queen was showing how even rich and high society people could be prostitutes.

Lex - you mentioned Freddie's soft push of sound into the microphone compared to belting out lyrics. So glad you brought that up. There is a video that when I watched it - it turned on my Queen obsession... You Take My Breath Away from Hyde Park in 1976. First it is JUST Freddie at the piano and they're playing to about 150,000 people FREE concert. Police were so worried (didn't expect that many they forced the band to leave unannounced just before the encore for crowd control). Heads up it's a slow song (not rock) and Freddie is wearing eye shadow - it was ok in that era. Another this is this song showcases Freddie's vibrato. That is where he vibrates his vocal chords and the sound comes out like when you throw a rock over water to make it bounce....it's skipping stones. Freddie had an unusually fast vibrato. For me what is amazing (beyond the fact this is nearly 50 years ago and Thank God we have it) but that alone on a stage to 150,000 people he practically whispers into the mic (or huffs at it like cleaning eye glasses) and the power is still strong enough to be heard and while Queen always had the best electronics it was still only 1976 electronics. kzbin.info/www/bejne/i3Oln5huh5tprtE

You have to remember when listening to older "rock" music, 80's to the 60's, this was the beginning of the Rock music. There were no strict guidelines, definitions, or genres at the time. All of these bands were explorers, experimenting and defining what later generations would declare as Rock music. They had ultimate freedom to sound how they wanted, which is why no two early rock bands sound alike.

By the way Brian May built that guitar with his dad from wood around the house...he calls it the Red Special which he still uses to this day and another by the way...Brian has a PHD in astro physics

Specifically the body was the wood on the side of the fireplace. He also invented (with his dad) some technical things that are now industry standard.

This song is Queens first break out hit in the US. 1974. They were very "glam rock" in the 70's. Freddie's style changed every year. They had a hit with what is considered the first thrash metal song! Watch the live version of "Stone Cold Crazy" live at the Rainbow. It will blow you away!

Brian can play so clean. It sounds simple but hard to make it sound that good. Without distortion , can't have mistakes.

Late to the party but, … giggle giggle, the naïveté of their speculation about the character in the song. So sweet!

"A genre in and of themselves" The last time I heard someone say that, it was Tom Hamilton, the bass player of Aerosmith. He was describing KISS.

We cannot set boundaries for the music Queen produced. They have to offer something to every genre. That is why people of many genres like their stuff be it blues, types of rock, pop, disco... many more!

Queen are doing classical music with rock and roll instruments. They allowed them self to express every shades of their emotion, they just don’t limit their music in a specific genra.

Another song (from this album) where Freddie goes very high then low is Brighton Rock. It also features Brian’s signature guitar solo. His guitar is unique. He built it with his dad from household parts and he added a 3rd pickup so it makes unique sounds.
