My Daddy used to sit and listen to this song and eventually learned to play it on his acoustic guitar when my Mom divorced him and married another man. In 1984 when I was 16, my best friend was a another girl named Angie. She was 16, waist long blonde hair and tall as the summer was long. We did everything together, where 1 was found the other would be too. One day, she just disappeared without a trace. Weeks rolled by they could not find her. The 45 of this song was in constant play on my stereo as I cried and prayed they'd find her. Months passed and I got a phone call - it was her! She said "Baby - it's me! I'll be coming home soon." and then she hung up. They traced her to California, long way from Omaha, NE. She'd been taken by an Afghan guy. She was never seen or heard from again. That was 36 years ago. I still think of her, I still miss her and still song still brings tears to my eyes.

When I was a child I thought that if they really loved each other it wouldn't have mattered that they had no money in their coats, but once I grew up I understood that sometimes my grandmother's saying "Quan ke mancia la minestra, l'amor al va fora da la fenestra" (when you don't have soup, love goes out the window) is true... Poverty can certainly take a toll on a relationship. When you have money problem you start arguing, and stress keeps you from appreciating what you have -- each other -- and make wrong choices, which then compound the problem. It doesn't have to be this way, but it's an all too common thing.

How is this for an absolute mindf@ck? Keith Richards wrote this song while about trying to say goodbye to his relationship with heroin. He used the name Angie to represent the drug because a sing serenading heroin was not likely going to be commercially successful. So when he writes, "With no lovin' in our souls, And no money in our coats" he was talking about how heroin drained him of feeling love and made him numb, and broke.
