John is an American rocker. Great songwriter.

Those are penny loafers which are popular in the Midwest. His hero musically is James Brown, John was doing those dance moves years before Michael Jackson. That's just how he's always done it. Lots of energy, lots of uninhibited dancing. Lots of energy and a whole lot of talent. A few years after this song came out John changed his sound. Reflecting a 'Ameriana' feel complete with fiddle, accordion, mandolins, Dobro and eventually rap was incorporated into that feel. With his incredible keyboard player breaking out new lyrics to mesh with the original. John e4njoys experimenting with the meshing of genres that people assume won't work together. John's feelings about that is folk, country, rap and blues are, in fact, all related as each is a form of storytelling.

Mellencamp was a true rocker and a rebel. In those days most people let it all out when it came to rock music. Anything goes once the music started. There were no inhibitions to doing what was inside you, especially on that dance floor.

Little known fact about John - was born with a rare disease for the times... had no idea he was born with spina bifida until he discovered a scar on the back of his neck around the age of 9 or 10, according to CBS News. As it turned out, the legendary performer from Seymour, Indiana, was given an experimental operation as an infant that saved his life at a time when most babies born with the birth defect didn’t survive. The 18-hour-long procedure that took place in 1951 was one of three operations on babies with spina bifida at Riley Hospital for Children in Indianapolis. Mellencamp is the only survivor of the three. The unlikely success of his operation left Mellencamp with a feeling of luck that’s followed him his whole life, according to his interview in Men’s Journal. He told the magazine: My grandmother told me for my entire life - everyday, “John, you’re the luckiest boy in the world.” And when you hear that everyday from somebody you actually start to believe it, which made me adventurous, which made me not afraid to try things, which made me not care about stopping myself from doing things that people said you shouldn’t be doing. Recently, John met the neurosurgeon who performed the pioneering operation on him nearly 63 years ago, according to CBS News. Dr. Robert Heimburger, 97, met him at the hospital where the surgery took place. themighty.com/topic/spina-bifida/john-mellencamp-opens-up-about-finding-the-man-responsible-for-saving-his-life

Check out John Mellencamp's first top forty hit in the U.S. "I Need A Lover" from 1979. That was back when he went by the stage name John Cougar. The song has a really long intro that jams hard, plus plenty of flashy guitar riffs.

Btw, the parking meters in a line are a nod to a similar scene in the movie Cool Hand Luke. I won't spoil why if anyone hasn't seen that, but they should. Excellent flick. But Cougar has them there because Luke was cool and rebellious. Cougar is intimating those things in this song and video, both. Cougar was a REBEL.

He was a moderately successful singer at the beginning of his career until one concert when a fan threw a Lynyrd Skynyrd leather jacket up on stage.. cougar met with the fan after the show and the fan explained that John Cougar was the first musician to satisfy his love for music since Lynyrd Skynyrd was no longer on the music scene.. John Cougar then realized he wanted his authentic name back melencamp and proceeded to become a legend beginning with this song

It seems like to me, Mellencamp then wanted to be part Stones, part Woody Guthrie. But those are pretty great folks to try to emulate or be influenced by. He referred to the Stones on some liner notes on one of his albums from around then. I loved this song, and Mellencamp around this time, and going into his roots stuff right after. I lost track, so not as familiar after Big Daddy, but I loved his stuff from this period, probably from Uh-huh to Bid Daddy. Was really great, not just good.

Melloncamp grew up In Seymour Indiana - about 40 miles North of my home town, Salem. In the Video for "Hurts So Good" - I'm pretty sure he's at the Blue Bird Cafe ("Best Bar, Bar None") In Vallonia - about midway between his town and mine - a bar i have crawled out of more than once, in my misspent youth [*] - when he hit big. And the winding hwy he's riding on looks a lot like hwy 135 between Vallonia and Salem - that I've ridden many times. [*] - I used to be God's gift to drunk women .....

Per Songfacts Mellencamp describes this as a "political song." He told Rolling Stone in 2013: "Reagan was president - he was deregulating everything and the walls were crumbling down on the poor. The song was the last one recorded and the first single. It was a hit immediately. I felt like I was pulling the wool over everyone's eyes."

It's bizarre to think that both John Cougar and David Lee Roth lived in Indiana at points in their childhoods. Two 80s megastars that were VERY disparate in style. Cougar was a fan of VH, I saw him in a show once saying they were the best thing to come out of the 80s and even their bad songs were good. Knowing the latter makes me think he wasn't just being nice. Also, early VH was well-respected by others in rock in general, about 75% or more was just due to Eddie. They had a monsterous net of fans from metal musicians such as Pantera (VH was their all time fave band) and the glam rock dudes like Poison and even some offshoots like Mellencamp and Henry Rollins. Rollins has a bit on YT about "The VH" as he calls them.

The first single that made me thing John could be really special. (I'd enjoyed "I Need a Lover", albeit I was more familiar with the Pat Benatar cover. And "Ain't Even Done with the Night" from the third album was a hidden gem, I thought. But all the singles from "American Fool" ["Jack and Diane"/"Hurts So Good"/"Everybody Needs a Hand to Hold Onto"] seemed to be much of a muchness and were IMO way overplayed. This was fresh.) Appropriate that this was his first single as "Mellencamp", reasserting his actual identity. And OH YES, that middle section…go, Johnny, go!!
