I’m from Indiana, too. John lived most probably the same kind of childhood we did - kids left their homes in the morning, took off on bicycles - played, explored, laughed, pretended, learned, and were expected to be home by the time the street lights came on. We absolutely had a blast. No one worried that their kids might be kidnapped or taken. Things were much simpler. None of us would have ever even considered staying indoors all day, staring at the TV. There was life outside, and plenty to enjoy. And trust me… we wouldn’t change any of it!

Most celebs who still live in small towns where they grew up are usually treated quite well. The town realizes that they are choosing to live there because they love the place, they could live anywhere but chose to stay there. Plus the people treat you like a person, not an image or brand.

Quite a few years later, when John had kids and had settled down a bit, John told this story on himself: He'd recorded a new album and told his kids he was going to shoot a video of one of the songs. His kids said, "Daddy please, whatever you do, please, don't dance." I'm guessing the kids at school teased them about their dad's dancing in his videos. They didn't know the school kids would have found something to rag on him about, no matter what.

I was born and spent my childhood in the city. At 11yrs we moved off grid and I attended school in a really small town population 350-400. As a city kid, I hated it at the time. (Nowadays I look back with fond nostalgia.) Moved to a college town of about 20k and settled in for decades. I think this is the small town life that John talks about in this song; big enough that you can still have a private life, small enough that everything's familiar and there's still a sense of community. I now live in the city where I was born and regret having come back.

Portable cameras weren't a big thing yet. We did however have our own version of a cell phone system. I'm from a small town, grew up in a small town. As I drive my kids to and from sports and activities, I always point out the beauty in what we see on the ride. Old barns, stone farm houses, the creeks, fields of corn and veg, the deer and bunnies etc. Sometimes they say they wish they live in a housing plan with kids nearby to play with. I acknowledge, but remind them of the large yard they have and the woods that they have explored. The experiences they've had vs the other kids. They understand and I don't think they'd change their location

Mellencamp wrote this song about his experiences growing up in the small town of Seymour, Indiana. Many entertainers from rural America settle in big cities where the action is. Mellencamp tried that, moving to New York City after he got a record deal, but it didn't take: he felt overwhelmed and creatively bereft. He moved back to Indiana and stayed there the rest of his life, setting up his own recording studio, Belmont Mall, near the tiny town of Nashville, Indiana, so he wouldn't have to go into a city to work. Many songs have been written about looking to escape the confines of small town America, but Mellencamp celebrates it in his music and life, most vividly on this song. The media portrayed Mellencamp as the champion of small-town America when the song was released. He downplayed his title as "voice of the heartland," saying he was simply writing about his life, not trying to make a statement. But to those living in small towns across America, his music was inspiriting. David Masciotra, author of Mellencamp: American Troubadour, grew up in the small town of Lansing, Illinois, and was one of many who felt validated by this song. "'Small Town' is an immensely important song in the recent history of American music because of exactly what he said: It celebrates the life that one can live in a town that is off the cultural map," Masciotra said on the Songfacts Podcast. "It affirms the dignity and integrity and value of the people who reside within those towns. When he wrote it, it wasn't his intention to become the 'Voice of the Heartland' or the keeper of the small town, but with all due respect to Mr. Mellencamp, I don't think that he gets to decide. Bob Dylan said that he didn't want to become the voice of his generation in the '60s. Well, once art exists outside the wider culture, it really becomes out of the control of the creator and it becomes something that embeds itself in the lives of the listeners. And for me, it affirmed the value and the dignity and the relevance of where I lived." The music Mellencamp listened to growing up in the '60s was a huge influence on his work, and he often put bits of classics songs from that era in his tracks. On the bridge of "Small Town," you can hear the riff from The Supremes song "Back in My Arms Again." Mellencamp wrote this song after having a number of conversations with folks from New York who seemed to think he - and everyone else from the middle of the country - was a rube. "I wanted to write a song that said, 'you don't have to live in New York or Los Angeles to live a full life,'" he told Rolling Stone in 2013. "I was never one of those guys that grew up and thought, 'I need to get out of here.' It never dawned on me. I just valued having a family and staying close to friends." Why was "Small Town" a hit? Mellencamp attributes it to a simple reason: it makes people feel good. He thinks many of his songs don't do well commercially because they make people confront problems, like the plight of American farmers. (Songfacts.com)

I don't know but growing up and I am 60 years old. I still remember the names of all my neighbors. I still remember what days I use to set time aside to help out the elderly ones. Cutting grass. Doing grocery shopping for them. Mostly because I knew I would get some homemade cookies or a nice piece of pie. Going to my grandma's house and seeing the note on the table saying she went to the post office. Knowing that the post office was right next to the local bar Maryann's. lol Great times where everyone knew everyone and kids where free to dream and be anything they wanted to be. Seemed every tree had a tree fort in it, so you had a place to hide your smokes. Life was great. Today I feel sorry for kids. Everything is manufactured for them.

I grew up in a small town. I talk to the same people I still talk to the same people I was with in 1st grade! I had some of the same classmates from 1st grade to high school graduation. Yes, we left our doors unlocked, and you could come home to seeing one of your friend's sitting on your couch, waiting for you. I'm so glad I had that experience...nothing like it!

I grew up in a small town. I went to school in that small town. I learned about life with my friends in that small town. I had a blast exploring nature in and around that small town. I fell in love for the first time in that small town. I became a man in that small town. I had my heart broken in that small town. Eventually I moved to a city in another state. I had a lot of good times in that city. Late at night my thoughts would inevitably lead me back to that small town. I really missed making memories in that small town. Finally I came back home to this small town. And I can't imagine a better place to be. Keep rockin' and stay heavy! Wishing everyone peace, love, and good happiness stuff from the mountains of northeastern Alabama 🖤🤘

I grew up in a town of 5000, we didn't have Internet at school until I was a freshman in 1994. I hated living there at the time, but it was a pretty good place to grow up looking back.

He married an LA model named Elaine Erwin and brought her back to his hometown in Indiana so she became "small town" just like him. I've met him and his wife alongside of Springsteen at the Devon horse show where they were just two dads watching their kids compete. They were both so cool about it. They were so nice. I was a little horse kid then and they both were very nice to me and my dad as we sat next to them.

my family comes from Decatur Alabama, I grew up in Cleveland Ohio. I have a very small town family even though I grew up in a big city. my mom had 2 brothers and 6 sisters. too much love for the big city I grew up in, we occasionally had to go back to the farm in Bama to remember where that love came from. I love y'all.

John grew up in a small town Seymour Indiana and still lives nearby in Bloomington Indiana. It's not as small as it once was but definitely not a big city. He lives on a popular lake there, we spend alot of time on that lake in the summer and his house is very visible.

John is from Seymour, but has lived just outside Bloomington for a long time now. Of course, he also has other "homes" in NYC and other places. His run of hit records were recorded at a studio in the hills of southern IN, in a TINY little place known as Belmont, which is between Bloomington and Nashville, Indiana.

There's A LOT of people who are in small towns or from a small town. They want to be represented too. Johnny Cash did songs that named cities. My favorite is Big River but the best City song ever is I've Been Everywhere.

Yeah, I know what it's like to live in a small town, I live in the same state Mellencamp is from but, in a different small town. If you live in a small town long enough, you'll find everybody knows everybody. My mom and dad's families lived here since they were kids and I've lived here all my life. The pictures shown in the video is reminiscent of my childhood, this was an awesome reaction , thanks!

Brad got it right... I was a farm boy... I heard the trains off in the distance, occasionally a plane flying overhead... All I wanted as a teen was to shake off the dust & dirt, go out into the World and travel, live in a city and make my way and some money and security. Well... now in my 50's... I've done all that. Married, had my kids and got them off to their life... Now all I dream about is retiring and buying some land with some elbow room BACK in a small community somewhere. Get back to what I had then. In other words, you can leave home, but home NEVER leaves you.
