U2 is the greatest band I’ve heard in my 59 years, they and their music have gotten me through dark times. This particular song has always been a search for the unknown, a search for something that can’t be found on Earth. Bono is a self described Christian, he lost his mother at age 14 while at the funeral of her father, she died of a cerebral hemorrhage. His lyrics come back to this theme many times since it was released in 1987 and to his mother even through their most recent album. I was 17 when their first album was released, and a fan ever since. Listen to their first album “Boy” and a song called “ Out of Control”, he wrote it around his 18th birthday and you will see that the themes are similar. Thanks for posting this reaction of U2, they have so many songs y’all would enjoy. Keep up the great content, God Bless!

My favorite thing about U2 is they are one of the very few bands where every person in the band is treated equally by the others. All decisions are made as a group. You rarely see that in the music industry anytime or anywhere. That kind of loyalty to your bandmates is so refreshing.

In between sessions at Adam Clayton's house and Windmill Lane Studios, Daniel Lanois (one of the co-producers on Joshua Tree) was producing Robbie Robertson's solo record and he actually invited U2 to be Robbie Robertson's studio band on the song Sweet Fire of Love. That album was extremely star studded as he got most of Peter Gabriel's studio band (Tony Levin on bass) and Peter Gabriel himself to sing on the song Broken Arrow (later covered by Rod Stewart). Also, not long after the sessions for The Unforgettable Fire wrapped, he also produced Peter Gabriel's masterpiece So. That was the brilliant thing about Daniel Lanois, he could just randomly call up some of the biggest rock stars on the planet and say "hey, can you come down and play some guitar on this session I've got going on my first solo album" or call up Adam Clayton and Larry Mullen Jr as a rhythm section for his own solo album.

U2 was an extremely influential band for me. They were introduced to a much wider American audience with the advent of MTV and their performance of "Sunday, bloody Sunday" at Redrocks ampitheatre. Songs from the Boy, War and October albums had a link to the lingering unrest of the cold war still in play. The band used that early success to go on an incredible run of great albums with "The unforgettable fire", "The Joshua Tree" and then "Rattle and Hum". "The Joshua tree" is as good as an album can get. It is nothing but quality songs that stand the test of time.

I remember when this album came out... The first song that I heard off the album was on a radio station that was playing at the Arby's I was working at. The song was "With or Without You" and it was like nothing I had ever heard. This album and the tour that followed were huge! There is nothing to compare it to today to make it relatable. I guess the closest analogy would be like technology something like Samsung was a few years back in terms of hype. Anyway, it was good times and the music that was being made was extraordinary. There was so much good music that it was impossible to keep up with it all. I still discover new music from that time that i love. Anyway I listened to the entire album every night for about 2 months without missing a night. It got better with every listen. There are so many layers to the songs on The Joshua Tree that even now I still discover sounds or nuances, rarely to be sure, that I didn't notice before. This album like all masterpieces will take you on a journey if you let it. Maybe you will discover what you are looking for in that journey. Maybe you will shift the search from outside of yourself to inside. Or not... just a thought.

I think that particular U2 song could be classified as gospel. There is another video of them going to a church and singing this song with the choir. U2 just has their own sound. This song is off their Joshua Tree album, which is arguably their best album. I hope you react to more U2. Bono's voice was awesome back in the day. At a later point in U2 history Bono had throat surgery and it changed his voice. But he seems to be able to work around it. Although he often cannot reach those high notes like he used to. The first time I saw U2 in concert was in 1985 their Unforgettable Fire tour. So good. So much passion. Bono has been an activist all his life. Definitely not looking for a wife, he married his high school sweetheart and they are still married. This is my favorite band next to Led Zeppelin.

When I first heard U2, we called it "college music." It wasn't popular yet, but the college kids listened to it and U2 was played on college radio stations. This particular song was from a bit later in their career, and it _became_ quite popular. By then, I think the term "alternative rock" was in fairly widespread use, and U2 (along with R.E.M. and The Cure and The Smiths and The Replacements and Pixies, etc.) was generally considered to be an alternative band, but they became pretty darn mainstream. It's probably "pop rock". (Genre is extremely tough to define, actually.)

The album's co-producer Daniel Lanois said he nudged Bono in the gospel direction on tracks like this one. He explained in the TV documentary Classic Albums: U2 The Joshua Tree: "I've always liked gospel music and I encouraged Bono to take it to that place. It was a very non-U2 thing to do at the time, to go up the street of gospel. I think it opened a door for them, to experiment with that territory... He's singing at the top of his range and there is something very compelling about somebody pushing themselves. It's like hearing Aretha Franklin almost. He’s married to his high school sweetheart. Has been all these years. Think of this as a spiritual search.

It was considered "Alternative" in the 80s. Your lady is incredibly adorable. Such a sublime smile... Alternative music defined the 80s...

It's rock. With pop influences and a little hint of soul and gospel (in the lyrics). He didn't say it was cold. He sang it was "warm in the night." Please listen carefully or go back and listen again.

U2 Joshua Tree probably one of the greatest albums ever made! You wanna hear more U2 with BB King watch "When Love Comes to Town".

JOSHUA TREE is a truly great album -- and most of it is their impressions of America during an American tour. God's Country is just stunning and so heart-rending -- you beautiful young people should listen to it. It was called "Rock" at the time it came out, in the early 80's.

The song on this album that deals with addiction is Running To Stand Still. Personally, I think it's their most powerful song.

The band members are Irish guys born in Dublin and grew up together. There is a significant religious undercurrent to their music and, as far as I know, all of them are Christians of some sort. This song was written as a rock gospel tune and they have performed it in concert with a gospel choir from Harlem that is amazing. I think what they are looking for is comfort in the belief that God is real and Jesus is where salvation lies. They are a very interesting band.

This is actually a gospel song. This is one of the many songs that Bono has written about trying to find god's grace (and often failing). Whenever Bono sings about love, he's actually singing about god. Its one of Bono's quirks that he calls god as love.

When they first came out they were considered new wave pinkish rock. There first hit Sunday Bloody Sunday was punk . Later the next album more rock. And there songs are all about God .

Brian Eno says Bono was pushing a B in the high end vocals of this song. He went on to say there is an emotion that comes forth when your voice is pushed to its limit.

I always thought this song was about Bono looking for his car keys. Not a huge U2 fan, but this is my favorite U2 song. They made another version of this song for Rattle and Hum with a gospel choir

Fantastic album. I still like the song that made them “ New Years Day” if you ever listen. Another cool one is from Batman soundtrack, Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me, Kill me.

U2 was considered alternative in the early years but morphed into rock/pop later on due to the popularity they garnered. I personally considered them rebel rock in the beginning but still consider them to be alternative as they had their own style and sound that was so different form others of the time.

I really think the two of you should react to the version of this song recorded in a Harlem church. It was released on their record, Rattle & Hum. Silver & Gold is also an amazing song off of the R&H that doesn't get the recognition it deserves.

They started out as post punk alt band and got more pop rock as they went. But they were bigger than anyone for awhile, and one of my favorites.

I would love people to react to one one of u2 from unforgettable fire to pop even, just to see how they remained relevant. Especially with pop as at the time it was questioned , yet now listening back it has outstanding tracks

This is a gospel inspired song. It is a spiritual reference. The version with the Harlem gospel choir is goose bump central.

I think the "waterfall sound" you mentioned is mainly the edge's unique guitar sound that involves using effects, especially delay, to create his signature sound. It gives the music that "atmosphere." In fact, some guitar effects are described as wet by guitarists and others are dry (mostly the absence of effects). This is a gospel song at it's core. It's about searching for God or spiritual connection. The last verse is mostly referencing Jesus. He sings you broke the bonds you loosed the chains, carried the cross and all my shame.
