@@inchhighpi9514 I'm aware he wrote it. That wasn't one of her big hits, though; while it was the lead single off her debut album, it didn't chart in North America or many other markets. Heartbreaker (her third single from the album) was her breakthrough single. And, to my knowledge, she never had any Mellencamp-penned hits. So you're giving him way too much credit for her success.

I love that Jimmy Eat World gave a shout out to JMC and this song on their own "Authority Song", off the Bleed American (or self-titled, after 9/11) album. "It's how the hustle goes / see what the jukebox knows / Put my last quarter on / I play Authority Song" I do wish they'd do another song from Jimmy Eat World..."The Middle" is so bland. "Sweetness"...that'd get them more hyped.

Heh, I remember rocking out to this in the car when I was in high school. Now check out Bobby Fuller "I Fought The Law" (or the version of that song by The Clash). And beyond "Pink Houses" and "Small Town", check out "Lonely Ol' Night", "Crumblin' Down", and "R.O.C.K. In The U.S.A.", and for a taste of Mellencamp's early sound, "I Need A Lover", from 1978. Pat Benatar released her version of that song as her debut single in 1979.

I remember an interview with JM back in 83 or so, and he said this song was written as a reggae song, and if you mentally slow it down and Jamaica-up the vocals just a touch, you can hear it! Also, for some reason I didn't really consider him to have awesome pipes in the day, but these days I think he rates with the best of them: certainly as good as Springsteen, with whom he is most often compared.

John Mellencamp's "Uh Huh" album is where he turned a corner as a songwriter and with arrangements. from the early 80s through the early 90s, he was one of America's best. I always identified with the lyrics to this song -- especially the part where he says growing old leads to growing old and dying. Growing up everyone around me seemed to want to grow up as fast as possible. I was always puzzled by this. Like this song I wanted to stay young and resist growing up and older. Still do, for good or bad.

I believe I've mentioned before somewhere that this man deserves to be Rock 'n Roll HOF if he isn't already there. John Cougar is classic rock now. And this is one of his best songs.

If you ever decide to do a deep dive on Mellencamp, listen to What If I Came Knockin from the 1993 Human Wheels album. It has that trademark driving percussion but is totally different from what you've listened to so far - kind of evil and angelic simultaneously. It didn't hit as a single, but I think it's my favorite song by him.

Fun fact: John was notorious for getting in to street fights, he said he’s been in too many to count, started them all and lost most.
