@@inchhighpi9514 I'm aware he wrote it. That wasn't one of her big hits, though; while it was the lead single off her debut album, it didn't chart in North America or many other markets. Heartbreaker (her third single from the album) was her breakthrough single. And, to my knowledge, she never had any Mellencamp-penned hits. So you're giving him way too much credit for her success.

Sonny Curtis wrote "I Fought the Law" and his band The Crickets recorded the first version in 1959. Curtis is now almost 85 years old.

I love that Jimmy Eat World gave a shout out to JMC and this song on their own "Authority Song", off the Bleed American (or self-titled, after 9/11) album. "It's how the hustle goes / see what the jukebox knows / Put my last quarter on / I play Authority Song" I do wish they'd do another song from Jimmy Eat World..."The Middle" is so bland. "Sweetness"...that'd get them more hyped.

I fought authority last Wednesday. Went up against the town board protesting my property taxes. We fought to a draw. People say it was a good show. I tell them I wish I could have watched it, but I was busy at the time. Authority doesn't always win, it just doesn't loose.

If you want to hear a more serious side of John, Rain on the Scarecrow has an intense tone and lyrics to match. Pink Houses is also more serious in tone and a great song as well. But guys, I'm just gonna tell you...to feel the whole JCM experience, you gotta see him too. Please just trust me on this one and watch the official video for Crumbling Down.

Heh, I remember rocking out to this in the car when I was in high school. Now check out Bobby Fuller "I Fought The Law" (or the version of that song by The Clash). And beyond "Pink Houses" and "Small Town", check out "Lonely Ol' Night", "Crumblin' Down", and "R.O.C.K. In The U.S.A.", and for a taste of Mellencamp's early sound, "I Need A Lover", from 1978. Pat Benatar released her version of that song as her debut single in 1979.

I remember an interview with JM back in 83 or so, and he said this song was written as a reggae song, and if you mentally slow it down and Jamaica-up the vocals just a touch, you can hear it! Also, for some reason I didn't really consider him to have awesome pipes in the day, but these days I think he rates with the best of them: certainly as good as Springsteen, with whom he is most often compared.

Yes! I saw him live on the Scarecrow tour. Nothing flashy, no elaborate light show. Just John and the band doing what they do. One of the best concerts I've ever seen.

Being an Indiana boy you find out about John’s true reputation. He is a bad boy that fought against his label and pretty much anyone that got in his way. But he admits he’s an ass, deal with it or move on. Huge respect for the man.

John Mellencamp's "Uh Huh" album is where he turned a corner as a songwriter and with arrangements. from the early 80s through the early 90s, he was one of America's best. Living in Bloomington, IN during Mellencamp's heyday (very close to his hometown), it was fun the way he was treated like a hero.

So many good songs by John in the 80s after his young arrogant bad boy years, he cleaned up his act and was a big supporter of Farm Aid preforming free concerts for the cause to aid small US Farmers from losing their farm land. Some other greats are Lonely Ole’ Night, Small Town, Rumble-seat, Paper & Fire, Cherry Bomb.

Dude was married to a model, dated Meg Ryan (pre-face-lift) and others, despite not being the cats meow looks-wise. How? He's authentic, doesn't care what you think, comfortable with who he is, and loves playing HIS music. I think chicks dug that about him. It comes out in his songs.

Mellencamp had a lot of great songs, ranging from Stonesy rockers, folky intense ballads, lots of to choose from. Try Crumblin' Down, Rain on the Scarecrow, Paper in Fire, Pop Singer. I don't know anything about the last 2/3 of his career, he's probably written a bunch of great tunes then too, definitely had it in him.

I always identified with the lyrics to this song -- especially the part where he says growing old leads to growing old and dying. Growing up everyone around me seemed to want to grow up as fast as possible. I was always puzzled by this. Like this song I wanted to stay young and resist growing up and older. Still do, for good or bad.

If you ever decide to do a deep dive on Mellencamp, listen to What If I Came Knockin from the 1993 Human Wheels album. It has that trademark driving percussion but is totally different from what you've listened to so far - kind of evil and angelic simultaneously. It didn't hit as a single, but I think it's my favorite song by him.

This was one of my favorite songs in the 80s.I didn't like hair bands, so this was what I gravitated towards more rock n roll. My #1 song from him was (Pink Houses) loved it also (Lonely Ol' Night) such nice guitar work by him in this song. If you haven't listened to them yet your in for a treat. 🎶🎸
