This song was released as part of the movie soundtrack for 'City of Angels'... (Goo Goo Dolls had a huge hit 'Iris' from the same soundtrack album) The lyrics go well w/ the plot of the movie - Nicholas Cage plays an immortal angel who falls in love w/ a female surgeon, played by Meg Ryan. The conflict is that Cage's angel is responsible for collecting deceased souls for the afterlife, while Ryan's surgeon is dedicated to saving lives...

As someone else said, this was created for the City of Angels soundtrack, a movie about a forbidden love between an angel and a mortal. Alanis was given a rough edit of the movie to watch before writing the song and at the time she wrote it she was also going through something in her personal life that she could write about and have it also fit the movie's characters as well. I think this is why the song hits so hard, she's writing from her own experience.

Then energy was infectious. Brad likes her voice and so do I. There's nobody else who sounds like Alanis that I can think of.
