This got played millions of times in the summer of 1976. I was a kid at the time and liked this song. I remember thinking it sounded so wholesome. I don't even know how I knew that word already but this song was screaming wholesomeness. It was not until years later when I finally figured what the lyrics meant....Not so wholesome!

So many classics came out around that time. I first started following KISS around this time too. 1976 was when I became a music fan and started buying 45 RPM records. "Beth" by KISS being my first.

I was a little kid in 1976 when this song came out. It was absolutely EVERYWHERE!!!! That was summer of 1976. By summer of 1978 it was Disco being besieged by a Pasadena CA based quartet led by two Dutch Brothers. But that hard rock band had killer harmonies, too.

I was 15 when this song was ubiquitous in 1976. It wasn't the kind of song *any* teenager would have admitted to liking. It's the sort of song that if it came on a TV variety show the family was watching the embarrassed kids would either leave the room or pretend to not know what the song was about. We were good at playing all innocent in front of our parents!

Bill Danoff, a member of the Starland Vocal Band came up with the title of the song from a happy hour menu at Clyde's restaurant in Georgetown Washington D.C. Bill Danoff said he enjoyed writing the song and downplayed the somewhat controversial lyrics as he didn't want to write an all-out sex song. Bill said he just wanted to write something that was fun and hinted at sex.

My aunt lived in DC for over 40 years and was heavily into the area's folk scene. She was friendly with Tim Hardin and Bill and Taffy Danoff (pre- and post- divorce). Let's just say Taffy got a bit of a reputation as a cougar later on in the '80s.

Talk about an overplayed 70s one hit wonder. I was 8 years old and in the third grade. Mom and dad took the family to S. Lake Tahoe for about a week in August. We would either go to Eldorado Beach or the Marina near Ski Run BLVD, and this song was always played on some transistor radio or tape player by all of the sun bathers. Nowadays when I smell coconut oil this song pops into my head.

A little info for ya. This song was banned from radio and tv play when it first came out. Others that were also banned in the beginning were John Denver's Rocky Mountain High and Sweets Little willy. There were others from this era as banned as well.

I like songs like this. Assuming you like this type of music, you can listen to this without really paying attention to it and it sounds enjoyable. The voices, melody, slow but steady pace...it's a pleasant pop tune.. It sounds innocent until you pay attention to the lyrics. Brad nailed it. This song is about a lunch break quickie. Gettin' some before the sun goes down. And yes it does start off with a country music vibe and because of that this song was a crossover sensation that played on the pop radio stations, country stations, easy listening stations and I think the r&b stations. Also the country music explosion was happening then and it actually started to over throw disco and even after the movie Saturday Night Fever, actor John Travolta made a movie about country western nightclubbing and dancing and America was spending billions on buying cowboy boots and hats and belts and jeans, and country western themed nightclubs were popping up in places like New York and the Hay Fever was on fire.

I wondered when Lex was going to get it but I probably heard it quite a few times before I did. It's too light to be my music but then I can't recall changing the station for something better. The first couple of times I heard it, I thought of ice cream or a snow cone, I was living in Az. I thought it was a commercial for one of the two, then I listened to the lyrics.
