Jamel -- On 1970s radio (during my youth...I was 14 when this song was out), things still had to be sung somewhat "in code" to keep it family friendly. Lyrics weren't blatant. That's why you have the sticks and stones rubbing and sky rockets analogies. BTW -- The members of the Starland Vocal Band formerly comprised John Denver's backup vocal singers.

Here's a fun fact about this song. In the 80's there was an Australian children's TV show called 'Simon Townsend's Wonderworld'. The first half of the first season aired with 'Afternoon delight' as it's theme song. The creator of the show, Simon Townsend, wasn't aware of the suggestive nature of the song but after he was told, immediately had a new song written to replace it.

The song was inspired by Clyde's restaurant lunch menu called "Afternoon Delight", you'll notice they rhymed it with appetite. Clyde's is in Wash DC. Eaten their many times. Booty was not on the menu.
