In the US you cannot comprehend just how this blasted the established order. All the media were "shocked & horrified" at this song. The BBC banned it, newspapers vilified it and it became THE song of the middle 80's. This song and video was actually banned in the UK in 1984 for a period of time after a Radio 1 DJ pulled it live on air in disgust at its lyrics. This caused a media sensation, and the song shot to the top of the charts becoming one of the best selling singles of all time. Lots of people also bought the T-Shirt saying ‘Relax’ on it in one of the fashion trends of the year. Eventually, the BBC did ‘relax’ and dropped the ban by the end of the year. Frankie Goes To Hollywood, a Liverpudlian band, also released Two Tribes and The Power of Love the same year, and all three records reached No.1, which was the first band to achieve this accolade with their debut recordings since Gerry and the Pacemakers (also from Liverpool). Unfortunately, the didn’t last much longer with an album and single release of Welcome to the Pleasuredome the following year, and then a break up of the band. Obviously, the song is something of a gay anthem, but it's hypnotic baseline and beat made it an instant success in nightclubs also. The controversy merely amplified its notoriety and sales.

Understand how homophobic the UK was in the mid 80s, and this track makes sense. They were sticking two fingers up to the establishment.

My high school had a fit when we put this on during our dances, but we accused them of being filthy minded and they allowed us to keep playing it... great times!

Although distracting, the uncensored video was best for a reaction. But as Lex picked up on, this song is a banger. It was everywhere, in the dance clubs, radio, and mtv (a different version though).

This video is too distracting for a first listen, the production and vocal made this record a dance classic forever

I love the way the both of you react to things. You both approach your likes and interpretations VASTLY different, but do so equally well.

So glad you chose to do the video. I wish you'd do that more. When asked what this song was about, their reply was, "Exactly what you think it's about."

Even to this day it seems there is still some strange and inconsistent American censorship lol

Hard to overstate the impact this record had in the UK when it was released. Immediately banned on all the major radio stations. Witness and appreciate the genius of Trevor Horn. One of the all time great music producers.

Hahaha, how times are changing: in the summer of 84 this song was booming from all hotels and disco clubs along the beach coast, today would be cancelled instant and the group forced to issue apologies on social media. Thanks for sharing, loved Lex's reaction, lol :)

In the 80's it was hard to go anywhere and not see someone wearing a "Frankie says Relax" t-shirt.

Yes it was. Radio 1 DJ Mike Reid had a fit.

In the UK at the time, a very famous radio DJ called Mike Read refused to play the song because it was so rude. The British people went, "F*** you Mike, it's fantastic!" It went straight to #1!

And Bronski Beat! I was only 7 yrs old when I asked for their album 'Age Of Consent' for xmas. I'd no idea what it meant, but loved their music - and my poor Mum dutifully went ahead and bought me it - no questions asked!😂 Gotta love Mums💖
