Peter Green, the founder of Fleetwood Mac, does have a fantastic track called End of the Game, and it's a great album also.) 4.Killing me Softly - original 5.Respect - original 6.Tainted Love - Equal, but if I had to pick, I guess I would choose Coil 7.Renegades of Funk - original 8.I will always love you - Original (the Cover is so over-the-top and forced in an unnatural and annoying way, the original is so much more genuine and tender) 9.Man who sold the world - David Bowie's the best, because the little details in his vocal delivery are so unique and genuine. Kurt Cobain's vocals are forced and fake. The third guy does his futuristic sci-fi, post-apocalyptic, desolate landscape gimmick and it's whatever

I prefer the Dolly Parton version of I Will Always Love You. Yeah, it feels more intimate and direct (plus that little piece of spoken word passage is actually cute and heartwarming) But still loves both versions tho hehe
@sp0ngeb00b73 жыл бұрын
As Whitney's one of the vocal trinity, obviously, her voice is unquestionable. But that instrumental definitely dates it, it's the same thing with all those classic 80's ballads, or any cinematic ballad really, and sure Dolly's is the original so it's technically older, but there's a difference between "older" and "dated"- songs can sound old because they belong to a certain genre or you can tell from production... but that doesn't mean they're always made cheesy by it or borderline unlistenable. Lonesome Town by Ricky Nelson is another example of this, the language would be a bit different today, but it's written timelessly and would still fit on any acoustic or blues playlist with songs written way after the 50's!
@sonicthehedgegod2 жыл бұрын
i agree, but i feel like i have to give it to whitney technically because it’s one of the most impressive vocal performances of all time, and the way it builds is very good. i feel like i have to give it its due as the objectively better version, but i personally prefer the subdued sincerity of the original dolly version.

The thing about Tainted Love is that Gloria said she never liked the song and was uncomfortable with the word “Tainted” (because she was a virgin lol)… there’s actually a lot of backstory with the song. Even the story of how how it first got the UK has history. it was a B side to a failed single and soft cell made it one of the biggest songs of the eighties- it had the longest chart run on the US singles charts for a long time. I think it’s fantastic. The way it transitions from Tainted Love to the cover of “Where Did Our Love Go” is simply magical. i like the original, but Soft Cells was next level. It was one of a kind. There’s a damn good reason it’s survived and everyone knows it more than forty years later.

I think one of my favorite covers is Tupac's California Love vs Zap Roger's California Love. Pac just made that song his own.

you didnt actually listen to the original version of "black magic woman", because it was written by peter green FOR fleetwood mac. it was recorded and released first with them in 1968 and then covered by santana in 1970, which was the same year peter green left fleetwood mac

That statement about not knowing 60s had good music hurt as someone who grew up listening to my dads 60s playlist

Personally my favourite Nirvana cover would be either Lake of Fire or Turnaround (Meat Puppets and Devo originally). Lake of Fire honestly sounds like Kurt and Johnny Cash shared a body for a few minutes, performing a masterpiece in that time. While Turnaround is an endearing promotion of a fellow 90s band's underrated song. The intro is also badass.

Not a cover, more of an interpolation

I hope someone mentioned the Coil cover of Tainted Love (particularly the music video). In the context of the aids pandemic it's a heart-wrenching dirge. The klaxons are so striking and so stark compared to the rest of the instrumentation and lamentatious vocal delivery. All version are great and interpret the song in different ways but no conversation about Tainted Love is complete without the Coil cover

Honestly my favorite part of Brad's channel is how much he lets his own audience be a part of his work. Like Fantano just kinda goes for whatever catches his eye but when you just open the floodgates to your fans and let them expose you to all kinds of cool shit, that's the best. Though I suppose it helps to *not* have an annoying running gag related to comments going on for like a decade I find so much awesome stuff through these videos.

Glad people are complaining about the lack of Hurt there's also a pretty transformative version of Imagine originally by John Lennon covered by a perfect circle

You should listen to some of marc almonds stuff (the frontman of soft cell) his voice is literally so amazing, and his range for different genres is insane.
