This is a big problem in Canada. I work at a store that sells kitchen supplies. Our whip cream maker uses Nitrous cartridges. At first we were not aware of this. A few years before covid we noticed a very large increase in sales of this one product. Over a period of about 6 months, we went from selling a few dozen cartridges a year to literal thousands a month. It took a while for us to notice that most of the people buying it were children. 12-16 years old with a few even younger. I think the youngest we caught trying to buy it was a 8 year old girl. They were also buying them in bulk. Given how much whip cream each cartridge makes and how many cartridges they were buying, we were sure that these kids were not using this stuff for its intended purpose so we looked into it. That is when we found out that it was nitrous oxide. I was the only one in my workplace who knew what it was, what it does and it's dangers. Our store manager made a rule that only adults were allowed to buy it and anyone who wanted one needed to be IDed. There was still a lot of bulk sales from young adults so a limit of 2 cartridges (130 grams) per customer was established. Unless of course they can prove that they own a whip cream making business. Theft of the produce became a problem after that so they are now locked up. Sales reduced back to a few dozen cartridges a year. We notified other stores of our chain and to my knowledge, most of them have put limits on sales and lock up the product now.

When I was ages 16 to 21, I would work for my grandfather in his fire extinguisher business. Both the United States Department of Transportation and Transport Canada requires that high pressure tanks to be tested every five years. My grandfather was certified to tests the tanks to meet the standards for both countries. He would apply both countries certification labels on the tanks tested. The goal of the test is to ensure that the tank does not explode during use. One group of tanks that would arrive to be tested are the dark blue nitrous oxide tanks. The nitrous oxide tanks to be tested would always come to us full of nitrous oxide. Unlike the helium, nitrogen, and carbon dioxide tanks, I would release the nitrous oxide gas from the tanks outside the building since I did not desire to become drunk from breathing the gas. After I would discharge the gas, I would remove the tank's valve in preparation for the test. Three times a week, I run five miles around the neighborhood. During my runs, I see those small, one time use dark blue cylinders on the side of the road. People are not using these cylinders to spread whipped cream on their cakes and cookies. I mostly see these tanks when I run on Sunday mornings. If you desire to see the cylinders that I am describing, enter the following search term into Google: "Walmart Leland Whipped Cream Chargers Pack of 24" . There is a KZbin video that describes the testing procedures of scuba tanks. Enter the following search term into the KZbin search box "How to Hydro Test a scuba tank". A scuba tank is a high-pressure tank used in scuba diving. When you go to the grocery store, you will see high pressure tanks in the floral department. Helium is used by grocery stores to blow helium filled balloons. There is a legitimate use for cylinders of this size. I had a blocked air conditioner condensate drain. I used a Gallo Drain gun to clean my air conditioner condenser drain. I got the idea to use this product from my experience working for my grandfather. It was common for air conditioner repairmen to visit my grandfather to have their carbon dioxide high pressure tanks refilled with carbon dioxide (he sold carbon dioxide) and have the tanks hydro-tested every five years. You can purchase smaller versions of these carbon dioxide tanks in cartridges form at Walmart, at any gun store, or at a paint ball supply store. if you desire to see what these cartridges look like, enter the following search term into Google: "walmart leland co2 cartridges". Carbon dioxide is used by restaurants and bars to put bubbles into soft drinks (coke machines). My grandfather possessed a 40-ton tank at his business filled with carbon dioxide. My grandfather made most of his profits selling carbon dioxide to restaurants and bars.

SO MANY comments saying things like "my dentist/doctor uses nitrous oxide for this procedure, should it be banned/ should I be worried?" Did you all miss the part of the video where it was explained that medical usage of NOS is mixed with pure oxygen to offset the negatives of NOS so that it CAN BE USED SAFELY and that the medical professional is monitoring you during the procedure and usage of the NOS? Plus the NOS being used in medical settings is MEDICAL GRADE not the food grade sold for whipped cream, they are very different, as stated in the video food grade stuff isn't tested for contamination to the level that medical grade is tested. Whilst its important to be knowledgeable and informed of what substances can do, as with everything circumstances matter. If i was going under general anaesthetic for surgery, it is very likely that I would be given fentanyl, however it would be medical grade, administered by a specialist medical doctor who would be monitoring me the entire time and adjusting the dosage as needed and I would be monitored in recovery and post surgery too. Very different from obtaining fentanyl from some random person on the street, mixed with who knows what, at an unknown strength, not having anyone monitor the usage, let alone a medical specialist. The information of what nitrous oxide can do to the body is important and it is good to be aware, however the information was not given in a way to promote scare tactics, so please don't jump on the crazy train. There's levels to everything, there are plenty of legitimate uses of NOS, other countries have practices in place to safeguard, like not selling to minors, maximum quantities per person per transaction, if buying large quantities - needing evidence of usage to justify the purchase etc. that way it makes it considerably more difficult for minors to access but doesn't stop legitimate usage of it either.

Good one Violin. One of your best I suspect. Kids may think this is new and therefore cool, but we used to get medical nitrous oxide from local hospitals in the early Seventies in Sydney Australia. But we explored it and left it alone soon after (especially after hospitals started locking their supplies). There must be a huge difference between medical N2O and food grade. But in retrospect I would not even experiment with medical grade now considering the since-acquired data. The medical implications of homocysteine was not known then. Then there is the ever present danger of hypoxia - especially when taken through a mask as you say. It's highly irresponsible of manufacturers to promote this as a recreational drug. It's more dangerous than it might seem.

There are regulations in place to ensure that when you make whipped cream, that contaminant is minimized and won't make the whipped cream dangerous to eat. There are no regulations about inhaling it.

I used to do whippets. Whippets make your blood oxygen drop very quickly. One day, I was curious and did an experiment: I used a pulse oximeter and held my breath as long as I could (just air)...I could bring my blood oxygen down to about 93% before breathing again. Then I did a whippet (no strong breath holding, just using for fun with the pulse ox)...my blood oxygen dropped all the way to 67% within like 1-2 mins effortlessly (no straining to hold my breath of nitrous or anything). That was the last time I ever did a whippet (4 years ago). If you think doing whippets only robs you of oxygen to roughly the same extent as holding your breath for a min or two (which is what I initially thought), think again. Breathing any non-oxygen gas will PLUNGE your oxygen levels very quickly. I would estimate that each of those nitrous hits damages your brain to a similar effect to a small blow to the head that doesn't quite knock you out...like football players or boxers...they get cumulative neurological damage to the brain with several small blows to the head over the years. And what I am talking about is just the acute dips in oxygen levels...the b12 and blood clots is a separate issue that also causes neurological problems. Then you have the fact that they are expensive and VERY bad for the environment. Just don't do nitrous; stick to safer forms of getting high if you must get high.

Could always grab a whippet in cartridges you use to make whipped cream. That’s always what my friends used. Would just pull it out of their mom’s cabinets . I was to terrified of it so I never tried it but watched many friends nod out. Was not my idea of a good time once I watched it sober. I stuck to drinking and weed.

I dont know if its illegal here now but I live in the netherlands and when I used to go clubbing 2/3 years ago, they'd sell balloons in a lot of clubs 💀 they have a tank or something and you could buy them for a few euro's each. Wild just people standing there inhaling balloons in the middle of people dancing.

I'm a car guy, and nitrous oxide, or simply nitrous, is used for boosting the engine's power output to make your car go faster, or more as commonly known, "hitting the boost" in Need for Speed and Fast and Furious. Automotive or industrial grade nitrous is usually mixed with sulphur dioxide to prevent people from sniffing them. So, PUT NITROUS IN YOUR CAR, NOT IN YOUR LUNGS.
@monkeytimesmagazine3725Ай бұрын
Theres a clear reason why teens in the late 90s and early 2000's stopped doing whippets, the neurological damage was just the tip of the iceberg with the crap they used to inhale back then like with break cleaner or dust remover

I had nitrous oxide once for a dental procedure to have a tooth removed when I was around 14. I'm about to turn 36 and I still remember, vividly, how amazing it felt. It legit scared me into never trying Whip-It's.

I did a lot of nitrous oxide when I was younger. I quickly learned that I had to breath properly between taking a shot and take breaks between nights I used them. I also took B12 supplements and had regular blood tests to see if my levels was OK. I did notice a definitiv difference if I didn't take the B12 supplement having numb sensation in my fingers. I tried to educate people around me ro use it more safely but to no avail. I watched people brag about the ability to take shots several times without breathing in between and completley ignored me saying it would give you brain damage if you did it that way. After a while I stopped because I felt some ill annotation to it from how others acted. It was the same with alcohol years prior. I have a hard time hanging out with people that are drunk since they act so self centered. Haven't done any in the last 10-15 years now.

There's a narrow definition of addiction that covers things like opioids, and has withdrawal as a component. But there are many things that can be habit-forming that don't cause withdrawal symptoms. Perhaps nitrous oxide is like that. Anything that gives people pleasure tends to cause people to use it repeatedly, often to excess. Nitrous is used as a propellant for making whipped cream because it's lipid-soluble but doesn't change the flavor of the cream. Is there no other propellant that can be used for this purpose? I know nitrous oxide is cheap, but is it worth it to have a harmful, potentially addictive substance so easily available if something else could serve the legitimate purpose of making whipped cream?
@grebulocities8225Ай бұрын
Not really. Most lipid-soluble, heavier-than-air gases have nitrous-like anesthetic properties while also being more toxic if abused - e.g. propane, butane, or 1,1-difluoroethane (duster). All of these are flammable as well. Conceivably nitrogen or argon could be used, but far less of those gases can be put in a cylinder or can than nitrous because they have critical temperatures far below room temperature, while nitrous can be pressurized into a liquid at room temp, allowing much more gas to be stored compactly. CO2 does have the right critical point, but it is ruled out because it is acidic and would curdle the cream while imparting a sour taste. There's really no substitute for N2O in whipped cream.

When they noticed, that some additive are really toxic for humans, they had to remove it from food, stores and ban its use. They HAVE to track Galaxy gas or any copy close to that, to confiscate, destroy these cans, punish resellers with hefty fines or else they'll get into a serious health crisis within 1-2 years.

My uncle was a dentist. We found out that he had been using it every day when his patients left. One day, he couldn't get out of his chair. His assistant found him next day. He spent the next 6 weeks in the hospital. He lost his license for almost a year & resorted to alcohol for the rest of his life🙄

Galaxy gas sounds like another risky fad that young people might follow without fully understanding the consequences. Hearing a doctor explain the science and health dangers behind this trend is essential-it highlights the risks involved and the potential harm to the body. It’s important that videos like this spread awareness, helping to protect people from engaging in harmful behaviors just because they’ve gone viral
@MrCmon113Ай бұрын
What has become viral is the alarmism around nitrous.

I have practiced controlled breathing for many years. I can now immediately achieve runners high instantly. I use this ability in moderation and only as needed for relieving stress in a safe environment at home.. If you want to be euphoric at your choice practice controlled breathing. My controlled breathing can never be confiscated and i don't need to remember to pack it for traveling.

Just because something is considered to be in fashion does not necessarily imply any underlying benefit of it towards your health. We are autonomously thinking humans not herd animals.

Most fun drug on the planet in my opinion. It’s hard to stick with moderation with how much I enjoy the stuff, but when used sparingly and along with regular b12 supplementation the harms seems negligible for me. Has improved my mood in general honestly

If anyone wonders what the ECG shows at 0:08: It shows a large anterior STEMI heart attack. You can see ST elevations in leads I, aVL and V2-V6. Furthermore you see ST depressions in leads II, III and aVR. The coronary angiogramme at 0:09 shows an obstruction inside the LAD (left anterior descending artery) if I am not mistaken. N. B.: The ST elevations are quite high and almost resemble a so called tombstone pattern which unfortunately implies that a lot of myocardium is suffering from a lack of blood supply.

Back in 2000-2001 I was working at a mall and a girl, probably 19 at the time, was working at a kiosk right in front of my store. She liked to do nitrous oxide, and she didn't exactly have a full set of marbles to begin with, as far as I could tell. Another guy working at one of the kiosks was a car guy who'd built an older car into a race car that was still street legal, and he said of the stuff, "All I know is that when I hit the button, my car goes from 120 to 170, and I don't want that happening in my brain." She was even getting her nitrous from a car tuner shop, not the medical grade stuff, so gods only know what she was inhaling.

When i was younger Steve-O was my first example of what nitrous is, I remember a documentary of his addiction story. A famous scene was him crawling on the floor in blood and vomit, with hundreds of whip-its cartridges around him as he screams then inhales and swaps out a new cartridge in seconds.
