Brain "fog" and low oxygen in Pulmonary Fibrosis

"Brain fog" has been described by many patients who suffer from chronic conditions. Short term memory problems, difficulty focusing on important tasks, fatigue and sometimes the inability to make fully rational decisions that impact one's care are very important topics to explore. In the case of pulmonary fibrosis, one reason why these symptoms may occur could be that some patients with more advanced disease have low oxygen levels. It seems rational that the brain may not operate optimally under low oxygen levels, but there is very little scientific literature specifically about cognitive issues in patients with pulmonary fibrosis.

Thank you Doctor Stenal for taking the time to look into this. I found it interesting as well and looking into it as well. I do sleep with oxy all night and every chance I get, for those experiencing this don't panic it is frustrating and some days are worse than others but I haven't notice any long term effects yet. I also believe that the clubbing of the fingers is a good sign as well of oxygen deprivation. I'm no doctor but I will answer any questions folks have of my experience with IPF and I was diag. I have COPD/PF from decades of inflammation associated with asthma as well as GERD. I also have a very rare genetic metabolic disease called Variegate Porphyria. Iron deficiency anemia is a common problem with Porphyria and something I have had most of my life. Until I was diagnosed with Porphyria at age 37 (and asthma at age 36) I always wondered what was causing intermittent "brain fog," low energy, and pallor (I'm very fair anyway but even more so than my family). A couple of years ago I was told the combination of anemia from Porphyria and COPD/PF is the cause of chronic low oxygen levels, which makes sense.

When my oxy got down to 85% 4 minutes into the 6 minute walk Doc stopped the test. Not sure about the medical acceptance but when I start having my breathing episodes it gets down to around 88%.

Once the requirement for oxygen has been established then using oxygen helps mobility, strengthens the muscles and assists with mental cognitive abilities. I’m commenting on this purely as an observer of my partner’s experience with ILD, sleep apnea and COPD.
