The BSC crew brought up a pretty damn good point in this video. I like Mario 3, and I will always love Mario 3, but I'm very sick and tired of modern games trying to be Mario 3. Just because I don't enjoy Mario 3 rehashing doesn't mean I dislike Mario 3. Mario 3 is still a fantastic game in it's own right and it's MANY imitators (New SMB Wii, 3D Land, New SMB 2, New SMB U) will always be second-class. It's like Sonic 4 (UGH) to the Classic titles. Just because Sonic 4 is a pale imitation doesn't make Sonic 1-3 any less enjoyable. It's why I enjoyed Super Mario 3D World so damn much and why the game was so fresh. Not only was it a great game, but it felt like a real original Mario title instead of just another Mario 3 imitation.
@SashaandStorm10 жыл бұрын
I'll be perfectly honest, I like NSMB Wii and NSMB U over Mario 3. I feel like Wii did just enough to warrant its existence, and I thought that NSMB U had great power ups, creative level design, etc. There's also New Luigi U, which I think did a fantastic job of differentiating itself from other games with Luigi's handling, the more difficult secrets, the pace switch up by having a really short time limit, and just harder level design in general. I feel like if they didn't have the word _New_ in the title, they wouldn't get so much flack. I also think they would have gotten less flack if NSMB Wii was the first one in the series and if NSMB2 didn't exist.
@SashaandStorm10 жыл бұрын
I also find that Mario 3 is just too barebones in comparison to Mario World, NSMBW, NSMBU, and NSLU.
@EdmacZ10 жыл бұрын
SashaandStorm I agree, When NSMBU and NSMBWii aren't imitating Mario 3, they're brilliant games. Which is why I do not understand why Nintendo feels to need to burden them with a crutch they don't need.
@strangevision9910 жыл бұрын
I agree with a lot of what you say but I also feel that SM3DW feels like a rehash of 3D Land. Of course I enjoy them both. I feel that Mario is always reusing elements from older games and when it tries to deviate from the formula too much you get things like Mario 2 USA, Mario Sunshine or Mario Galaxy. Now I think galaxy gets its fair share of acclaim but other titles that mix things up too much are often divisive and have people wondering why they called it a Mario game instead of creating a new IP and developing that further. So I can see why Nintendo doesn't shake things up too much, its probably not good for business unless they have a stroke of genius.

Looking back on the NSMB games, I have to say that despite a lack of innovation, I really enjoy NSMB Wii, NSMB U, and Luigi U (though I think Luigi U did a pretty damn good job of switching things up). The original NSMB is just too simplistic (and that's saying something for a Mario game) and easy, and something about NSMB2 just bored me to death while playing it. 3D Land is okay, but you guys are right in that even though the 2D x 3D idea was interesting, it lacked the punch. On the bright side, I think that 3D World took that problem and blasted it into the sky. It's a huge improvement creativity-wise over 3D Land.
@SashaandStorm10 жыл бұрын
***** Pretty much. Nothing particularly special but still a good time for the most part, some more than others (NSLU > NSMBU > NSMBW > NSMB2 > NSMB). And you should get on 3D World and the Galaxy games (I think you said before that you hadn't played either of the Galaxies). 3D World does a great job of significantly expanding on 3D Land's formula and making it feel like a unique experience rather than a Mario 3 homage (or ripoff, depending on your perspective).
@SashaandStorm10 жыл бұрын
***** My boredom with NSMB2 probably clouded my judgement. So yeah, I should probably switch those around. And just make sure you get to Galaxy at some point when you have time. I understand the feeling of having way too huge of a backlog. As for your apology: 1. Most BSC watchers don't tune in right when the video is uploaded. Wait until the morning. 2. People have probably already forgotten from last time. Just don't worry about it. You didn't really do anything bad anyway.

I whole hardly agree with you on 3D world. In my opinion, 3D World is a classic styled Mario game done right. It feels like a 2D Mario game, but doesn't feel too generic, soulless or formulaic like 3D Land & the NSMB games does in my eyes. It offered a lot of fresh new ideas (As well as a new soundtrack...) that helps it distinguish itself from other recent Mario games.

It is a tradition to have irritating desert levels in Mario. Shifting Sand Land took up the pyramid aesthetics, and didn't pull it off that well. Gelato Beach, the sandy area, has two of the most hated missions in Sunshine: the Sand Bird and the watermelon. Teehee alley has that Peach escort mission, Dozing Sands has the drill thing and Drybake Stadium has that godforsaken sticker puzzle with the hieroglyphs.

The good thing about deserts in Tales games is that they're either spaced father or incredibly short. Symphonia definetly had an earlier example of it. I'd even almost count that as a world 1 equivelant. The stuff you do at the Tower and Iselia forest, that's more like prologue shit. Triet is definetly where the game actually begins. Aside from that, Eternia did have one quite a bit into the game and was the most briefly visited area in the game, Abyss did have one, Vesperia also had a short section in the desert and Graces had Stratha, propably the most exspansive desert section in Tales. It doesn't really make a differance in an RPG either way. Grasslands or sandy wastelands, it's all rubble under my feet and only really a backdrop to the next fight.
@ElykTsorb10 жыл бұрын
I can only think of one example where a desert level was done particularly well, and was meant as the second level of the game. Donkey Kong 64 had a great desert level, probably because they incorporated the whole aztec theme into it as well.
@TwilightNoirZ2610 жыл бұрын
In Rouge Galaxy the desert level is where you start.

If it makes anyone feel better, Tales of Xillia doesn't have a desert at all, with the closest being a wasteland-ish looking highroad connecting two major areas that you cross pretty much without incident.
@strangevision9910 жыл бұрын
There's a desert-ish section fairly early, just after you get that old man in your party. I think it was kind of Grand Canyon desert though as opposed to Egyptian desert though. I stopped playing around that point but I can't remember why.
@superluigi8810 жыл бұрын
The gorge area was more of a windswept canyon imo, but a lot of players get discouraged by that area because it's the easiest place to get lost in the game due to it being so vertical in design.
@strangevision9910 жыл бұрын
superluigi88 Yeah I remember I completed it and had to head back to town and thats where I stopped. I'll have to return to it since I generally like the Tales games.

I like the desert, if utilised well levels set in the desert are usually my favourite.
@WingSlash10 жыл бұрын
In Tales of the Abyss, the desert area comes in fairly early in the game. However, up until that point, you had seen areas with copious amounts of foliage and crystal clear water so, it was done more so out of a need of contrast to what you had seen up to that point. Besides, in that area you're mostly traipsing around the bazaar and exploring an underground cave rather than purely exploring the desert.
@strangevision9910 жыл бұрын
I think contrast is also the reason why games like Mario did it originally. You pass from lush green to desolate sand. I'd say its the reason for the fire and ice trope too. Well apart from Iceland...

There's actually two ways to get the treasure ship, however the second way is very similar to the first way. Instead of the 10s digit matching the multiple of 11, have it be a number that can be subtracted from the 1s digit that can equal 5, for example if you get 11 coins, get 5 in the 10s digit of your score. Then finish the level on an odd time. It sounds complicated, but once you figure it out, it's very easy to get every time.
@szechwean10 жыл бұрын
I always go after the treasure ship in World 1-1, because that's probably the easiest place to get it in the game. You just break one brick (to get the tens place to 1), repeatedly get the P-switch blocks at the end of the level by going in the pipe up top to respawn them until you get to 11 coins, then hit the card box on an even number. That's the only place I know how do it, though.

Ted, the gyroscope is a computer component. Basically, it detects what position the 3DS is in (in this case, "upside-down") and sends a binary code that corresponds to that position to the CPU. So all you'd have to do in an emulator is find what that code is and make sure it's active while you're trying to evolve Inkay, which would have to be programmed into the emulator itself but is far from impossible.
@papershadow10 жыл бұрын

IIRC, Boss Bass is the one that tries to eat you and Big Bertha is the one with a smaller fish in its mouth. They use the same sprite, so that's why people get confused. As for desert levels, I think it's more a case of the designers not trying than of deserts being inherently boring. A level based around the mesas of Arizona, for instance, could give you geometry that wouldn't be out of place in Sonic the Hedgehog.

I would really argue against the “does nothing new” mentality for 3D Land and 3D World. 3D Land is the first time anyone has ever made a 1:1 recreation of their 2D gameplay in a 3D space. Cuz if you look at the other 3D games, none of them really play similarly to their 2D counterparts. The closest would oddly enough be Sonic Adventure, but that has other issues that hold it back from being a 1:1 recreation of 2D Sonic. I would say the fact that nobody has actually tried that before is enough to make 3D Land stand out on its own. For 3D World, yes we already had 3D Land, but 3D World simply expands upon 3D Land and introduces a lot of new platforming gimmicks and concepts to the series. 3D World to me feels like a Galaxy game, just without the gravity planetoid gimmick. Just super fun platforming at its finest. Not to mention also being the first 3D game in the series to have 4 player co-op.

great job beating morton jr/big mouth (man that guy never shuts his trap in the cartoon), it weird that slowpoke evolves at 37, were the dex entry, tells that it needs shellder, same thing in the anime and pokemon snap. if I change how it evolves, its one of those having something like having shellder in your party and level up slowpoke

The concept of 3DS Notes was always interesting to me when I first heard of the system, but when I bought it I was dissapointed to know they removed the on-screen keyboard option from Pictochat and my drawing was/is atrocious.

I like Breath of Fire 3's desert, it was near the end of the game, it was vast and could really kill you if you didn't cross properly. I guess it might be looked at as annoying but it at least represented a desert fairly well. Other games have done similar things but I can't think of any other than perhaps FF7, but that desert wasn't quite as deadly, it was endless though.

You can add Diablo 2 and 3 to that list of games that have a desert as the 2nd area/world.

Honestly, I'm glad we're moving past the days where secrets in games are almost impossible to find without any guidance, because how are you supposed to find them? I feel like everything in a game should be possible to find using nothing but what the game provides you. I mean, if video game magazines didn't talk about it, how would anyone have found the Hadouken in Mega Man X?

Well the best fake Green Hill Zone by far is Green Hills Zone from Sonic 2 for Master System. That one, they weren't even trying.

Boss Bass is the big fish that swims on the surface and jumps out to try and eat you. Big Bertha is the big fish in the underwater levels that just swim back and forth, occasionally spitting out a baby fish before eating it. The big fish in Super Mario World are called Porcu-Puffer, and the one with the shades in Mario 64 are called Bubba. For more information, please visit the Mario Wiki, so that you too can stop living in ignorance.

Boss Bass was the fish that was chasing you and eating you in 3-3, while Big Bertha is the female of the species...I guess...that is found deep underwater and is more passive. The scary spiky fish that eats you in Super Mario World is the Porcupuffer.
