i think the biggest difference between old and new is that the new ones are more versatile, have more level boost on tap and are a bit more aggressive. with the old bois you are set to pretty much one sound, but if this fits your amp well you're good.

A very timely video mate; this topic isn't really talked about alot on KZbin, why we use these newer variants. I have the sd-1, ts808 and recently got the plumes. Have to say that although I love the classics, the plumes is just more versatile and sounds far cleaner; a perfect boost imo.

Not only has the SD-1 it’s own thing going on (patented asymmetrical clipping) and is the most aggressive of the bunch but it also cuts through the mix the best. If it just had more volume and maybe more tone options (separate bass treble). The Direwolf came a bit closer than the others but not there yet. What makes it a bit frustrating is, the asymmetrical clipping can‘t be dialed in later.

Cool comparison! I run a bit of a different set up because I run 3 amps simultaneously, Carvin X50b with 4x12 cab, Marshall jcm800 4010 combo, and a Peavey stereo chorus 212 . Vastly different amps, so on the pedal board I don't run a lot of effects, I do have however 4 drive pedals in a particular order. An original black Label Boss HM2, Ibanez Nu-tube screamer, MXR Zakk Wylde overdrive (cream color one), and a Boss 40th Anniversary SD1. The SD1 and MXR overdrive are very close, a little different. The Ibanez Nu-tube screamer is an interesting beast, not sure why I don't see it around more? It definitely has a great sound, it's not just a rebranded tube screamer, it has its own sound, very High Definition to me and the added "Blend" knob is awesome. Maybe that could have been a pedal to try in a video like this?

Would love to get my hands on some other od pedals. I have a Maxon OD808 that is older than I am, like early 80’s. I love it, and it works awesome so I just haven’t tried any others. Would love to see how it compares to other ones like the fortin 33, or even just a ts9 or precision drive. It’s hard to really compare through videos because I can’t really tell for sure until i actually hear/feel the response.

Great video! I used the SD-1 followed by an EQ for about 10 years as my main clean boost, and I've never heard a clip or seen a youtube video that's ever made me want to drop 200+ on a pedal to be used as a clean boost. I'm thankful for your video, because for me, it's reconfirmed my notion that I would be waisting money in spending that much. Although, the Dirty Tree has caught my eye, but it's only 130 bucks. Since, I've moved on to an MXR Wylde Overdrive which is quite similar to the SD-1 but with more bottom end. Not using an EQ after my MXR right now. As for what EQ I used after my SD-1, MXR 10 band, and I would boost the mids and some of the bottom a little bit. For a while I had a Mooer Radar and I would use the paraEQ feature after my MXR Wylde Overdrive, but that just became a rabbit whole of endless tweaking.

@@Viking_guitarist idk about that entirely. My 6505 won't cut, won't saturate where I want it to, won't tighten up if I don't hit it with a good overdrive. Another example is if I hit my amp with a hm2, that's going to absolutely dominate the sound and get that chainsaw sound.
@Viking_guitarist
@Viking_guitarist Жыл бұрын
@@MetalHeadProductions what are your setting amp and overdrive?
@MetalHeadProductions
@MetalHeadProductions Жыл бұрын
@@Viking_guitarist I don't remember the settings in this video, but typically I like to set a 5150/6505 style amp with the bass around 11 o'clock, mids and treble around 2 o'clock and gain at noon, or a block letter with everything around 2 o'clock. Different amps take different boosts and drives better than others and they work with different amps or tunings. Like my Friedman sounds great with the plumes, my new dual rec slays with the dirty tree, my stealth is killer with my Fortin modded ts9, the stealth and Friedman stack super good with hm2 style pedals certain fuzz pedals great, the 6505 does not. I don't boost my ENGL at all, that amp doesn't benefit from it. Some amps absolutely need a boost, like my dual rec, or something like a jcm800, those need a boost for metal. A dual rec without a boost is very different.

I’ve been wanting a Direwolf or Savage Drive, but man it’s hard to choose with sound clips. I like the simplicity of the Savage Drive but Direwolf definitely sounds killer and has a lot of range. Do you still prefer the Savage Drive? I have a TS808, Plumes, and Naga Viper (treble booster with three knobs instead of the usual one.) Out of those three the Naga Viper is my favorite, it’s awesome for tightening low end, adding high mids , and harmonic content. You should check one out, I’m sure you’d dig it for the Sabbath tones alone, but since it has 3 knobs it’s also great for chugs.

So both are great and it honestly just depends on the rig, but overall, the Savage has been on my board for 5 years straight. It's a bit drier, it can get tighter, and the bite control can get more aggressive. Doesn't have the versatility of the direwolf, but it does the thing I like really, really well.

@XChristianNoirX
@XChristianNoirX 4 жыл бұрын
@@lasv155 the pepper dirt tree is the 33/grind clone? I have a 33, Hex, and the GUP Grindr, which does the 33, Grind, and TC. The GUP almost does the 33, but it's slightly different. I think the 33 just has a crazy high input impedance, which gives it that extra high end. The Grind's input impedance is a bit lower, but still well above the 1M of most pedals (500k for Maxon), and I'm not sure what the TC Integrated Preamp's is.. Fortin likes to really raise that input impedance way up. I also have the 2020 Vfe Standout, with which I can get super close to the 33, maybe more than the GUP lol, but even turning the input impedance internal trim pot to max, I'm pretty sure it's lower than the 33. However, recorded, you can barely tell the difference. It's not easy though.. The Standout is a great pedal, but it's very touchy. Almost too many controls. The HD Precision Drive has a lot of control, but the low cut on a knob with clicks makes it easy to duplicate settings. The Standout takes a lot of fidgetry. Also have the Vfe Dragon incoming.. It's similar to the standout, but no parallel mix and also has a clipping circuit which the Standout doesn't have. The main reason o got it though is because there is an internal trim pot for compression of the drive circuit. I'm curious to try that out.
@XChristianNoirX
@XChristianNoirX 4 жыл бұрын
@@lasv155 I suspect all the multi/clones of the Fortin/TC stuff are based on, or actually are exactly Pedal Pcb rips. It's not too difficult I suppose to put the TC and both Fortin in a pedal, because you pit the main circuit as the TC which has EQ and then switches to switch to the Fortin's, which are basically the TC, but turn the EQ off and replaces it with fixed eq. I believe the only diffence between the for 33 and grind are actually just one or 2 parts, which just change the fixed eq setting. I know at least the Dirt Monger FX version is pedal Pcb.. But I think the rest are too, perhaps with rebranded circuit boards, but I'm not 100% sure.
@XChristianNoirX
@XChristianNoirX 4 жыл бұрын
@@lasv155 btw, here is a comparison of the Foritn 33 vs the VFE Standout. They can sound really close. There is some slight variation, but I did this very quickly. If I had set using studio monitors and reamping, I may have gotten closer. The recording isn't the greatest because I just quickly did it on my phone to show a friend, but you can hear that there isn't a world of difference... It's pretty much a hair different here and there. I could have maybe shaved a hair more low-end on the VFE. drive.google.com/file/d/1S9gJoJdSZGxPhDwiu-QMxhtwv8khz6xs/view?usp=drivesdk Besides the fact tat one or another drive may cut a little more or less low end or whatever, there isn't a world of difference between a lot of the modern pedals, in the sense that any given pedal of these will sound better or worse with different setups and guitars etc. But yeah.. Since neither the 33/Grind have clipping and the Standout doesn't either, one can get the standout to mimic the other two well enough.

@MetalHeadProductions
@MetalHeadProductions 3 жыл бұрын
This is how you use these for metal, which many of them in this demo are intended to be used as. They're clean boosts, but more importantly, they preshape the tone before hitting the amp so the mid bumps, top end, and how much low-end is cleaned up are dramatically different from each other and that's important for metal players when considering a good boost. There are plenty of blues dad channels playing these as traditional overdrives for you to go watch.

@@MetalHeadProductions what a waste of a good pedal to use it to boost inaudible b.s. The only reason you don't play blues is because you can't. I will repeat the stupidest thing I ever heard, "if it sounds good to you, it is good". Good luck with that. Oh, and by the way, not one of the pedals you have in this video was made to be a clean boost for your type of music, they were made to be overdrives for blues and rock music mr. Dumas.
