Not sure if you know this or not, but if your electric brakes go then you can just gear down to 2 or 1, then you let the engine do all the work instead of burning out your brakes and warping the rotors. Maybe you knew this but I was just trying to help. Great footage, take care, Alan

Yeah that’s what I normally would have done except I didn’t realize the exhaust brake wasn’t on until i was pushing the pedal to the floor to stop 😅 but definitely, I agree that’s the way to do it! Thank you!!

Coming from an experienced OTR truck driver - when driving through the mountains proceeding downhill, be sure to have applied the Tow/Haul and use the lower gears (second) to proceed downhill. You will still have to apply your brakes periodically, but by allowing you transmission to do the breaking for you - your trip will be uneventful and you’ll save your brakes. Exhaust breaking is available on the new diesel pickups. Parking: I hate to admit it but sometimes I just save time and aggravation by parking in two stalls. I also like to back-in to the stalls so I can pull straight out - it’s easier that way; especially with a dually. Love your shows. Be safe - always have fun! Ride the wave of blessing

Haha. We are in Turkey Springs until Saturday. Yesterday Forest Service came by and said the will be rejuvenating the entire area, so no camping in about a week here. Second, when I was on my way to the ER (yeah, not feeling well, felt like a possible heart attack) I had a brake line bust about 1/2 mile from the hospital. I got checked out, just high blood pressure (hell I didn't know), so I'm recovering from it and got to be a ER Parking Lot Mechanic.... Ended up taking it to No BS Automotive here in Pegosa Springs. In the mean time, Cruise Control, Engine brake and the emergency brake was my friend!! (ok, back to the video!)

One other thing I've been meaning to mention....when putting your slides in or out, try so stop before they start ratcheting/clicking. Ease them in or out. I've been told the ratcheting you hear is the gear overriding the notches in the slid bar....if that makes any sense....I hope. And a heat/temperature gun is a good thing to have for checking brakes.

Recall on the brakes, broken mobo on the auto levelling system buuuuuuut *AMAZING* customer service, was gonna say killer but no, amazing is better. The machines we have today in this amazing time we live in are soooo complicated, unimaginably so my SO is a software dev so I see just how insanely complicated even supposedly simple stuff is, so everything has bugs or faults and it takes a good company to admit that fix them as quickly and as best they can. You picked well guys. To take a step back with everything we have today, technology wise, is just so crazy! Which to me as someone who may not look it but is old enough to have used dial up regularly and was proud of my separate landline (WITH ITS OWN NUMBER LIKE OMG) in my bedroom, and my first like 3 mobile phones were B&W (Well Black and green lol), & first colour phone still didn’t have a camera & when it did? It was VGA (0.3 Megapixels)… lol 2023 honestly seems like the future!lol

We have driven our 30ft motorhome pulling our ATV trailer over that highway. Easy actually as there is little elevation climbs, you just take your time over the highway. Never drag your brakes, pump, let them cool and gear down. The real challenge is inclement weather, or rock falls shortly after a rain.

I lost my brakes coming down Teton Pass and had to use my emergency brake to stop. It was totally my fault. I had tailgaters pushing me and I just went too fast and had to use the brakes too much. The pedal went all the way to the floor and my brakes were smoking. Never again. I just keep it in a low gear and ignore the tailgaters. If I don’t have anywhere to pull over and let them pass, they just have to wait or pass me.

You got more guts than me with that rig doing the million dollar highway. I've been camping in the mountains most of my life. PLEASE don't try the bear tooth highway. I was behind someone who did it in a huge fifth wheel and he was having to do three point turns with a hundred cars behind him on a couple of switch backs. I'm not sure how he made it or even got there with the warnings. But it took three hours out of our day on a usually very pleasant drive getting back to the Red Lodge area in the dark. And once he was moving, he passed turn offs where he could have stopped for five minutes to let the 100 backed cars pass by... I simply do not understand such behavior. ALWAYS let your transmission do the work. That is what the manual gearing is for. You could have died. Find the sweet spot where the transmission is doing most of the work and you hardly use the brakes and don't worry about the speed and please use the turn offs if you get too many people behind you. Even without tow haul it can be done. I have literally pulled off of drives when behind people whose brake lights were red almost all they way down. I did it because I didn't want to be the one who had to stop and go down and see all the lifeless bodies on the side of a mountain and if I pulled over I'd come up after it all happened. I actually saw it happen once but fortunately it was an SUV no trailer who just glanced off a tree in a relatively flat area and no injuries but you could sure smell the brakes that would have been toasted irrespective of the crash. Generally, its the people with flatlander license plates who make this mistake. The brakes are insurance NOT a go to way to slow down in the mountains. LET YOUR TRANSMISSION DO THE WORK.

I had trouble losing my wallet so i bought one with a small chain link, now i never lose it. If in mts you should never drive with full water tanks, thats to much weight(7 lbs per gallon) times 60 gallons equals 420lbs, to much additional weight for mountains. In 10 years of driving mts i have never had hot brakes.

Tip about filling your fresh tank. If you take off your pressure regulator while filling and watch your level so you don’t overfill, it will not take as long. Parking our Ram 3500 dually long box is not that bad in the city. Not easy though! We have to parallel park in front of our house so we’re getting lots of practice! Hubs went downtown once to pick me up from work & I won’t drive it to work because our compound has been cut in half due to work on the overpass in it. It takes up a lot of space! We did find parking in Jasper, Alberta but it wasn’t summer but still busy. I’m rather chill about stuff but we plan on parking on the edge of town’s & cycling in (not e-bikes but ‘real’ bikes). We have the Icefields Parkway (#93) that is almost similar to that highway but I think is a bit wider & definitely less hairpins, but the views are amazing! It was that highway that determined which truck to get…can pull a fifth wheel through it without holding up traffic. Too much.

Why do they call it the million dollar hwy? For the views or because it causes a lot of damage to vehicles? I will think for the views!,

I looked this up actually because I wondered the same thing! It seemed to be a combination of how beautiful the views are and because of how much it cost to build!

I thought well they have a new rv so less videos watching y’all work through the drama. Oh no it doesn’t matter you still have the adventures and just as calm as ever. And admitting to your mistakes. You don’t see that a lot. Great videos guys. Keep them coming.

I've driven that road many times. The first time can be intimidating but once you see a semi coming through you realize it can't be too bad. The north end is the worst, that's where the real pucker factor sets in. It's called the Million Dollar Highway because it's base is made from mine tailings that contain low-grade gold ore. The reason your fresh tank takes so long to fill is the hose reel has a small diameter hose on it. To fill faster carry a short hose and fill through the pour-in spout.
@wildrvlife
@wildrvlife 2 ай бұрын
unfortunately, a lot of the newer RVs like ours don't come with a gravity feed water spout opening. We could get a shorter hose to connect to the nautilus system, but it would still be slower than the gravity feed. We've just accepted our slow fill rate lol

I have driven the Million Dollar Highway outside of Ouray several times in my 4Runner. There are no guard rails before the cliff edge. That is so they can push the snow off. Yes, it is a bit sketchy.

No, Craig noticed that when he pressed them, he was having to push them all the way in so we slowed down to pull off at the next pull off and as soon as we got slow enough we could see the smoke 😬

Yes' been on the M$ Highway.. but it was on a motorcycle. While you do have more space in the lane due to the size of the bike there are 2 issues. 1. If you went off the road you have way less protection than a car/truck. 2. Other vehicles on the road (especially rvs) seem to think that since your a bike and smaller that you dont need the whole lane and come over the center line a lot.
@wildrvlife
@wildrvlife Жыл бұрын
I agree!! Rv drivers tend to be pretty awful with staying in their lane, and skoolie drivers are even worse. Lol!!
@CurtisAllenG

I get it that sometimes RVs NEED more space.. (I used to drive an 18wheeler) but need to make sure they aren't doing that at the expense of someone else's safety. :)
