1) That's a maintenance warning, not a "check fluid" warning. As per BMW brake fluid is due to be replaced every two years regardless of mileage because brake fluid is hygroscopic. 2) You definitely do NOT need to remove the battery cover to get that cowl access panel off so you're just wasting time. 3) you should never add brake fluid unless you have a leak, in which case you need to deal with that first anyways. If the brake fluid is low, you're brakes are most likely worn out, and topping up the reservoir will just make it overflow when the calipers get pushed back in. The whole point of the maintenance reminder is to let you know something is due. Resetting it when you don't even know what it means, and then advising people to do the same is flat out irresponsible.

I appreciate the comment and respect your opinion. I would agree with you if the vehicle had high mileage. But the fluid looked clean and since it’s a closed system (and I’m a chemist) I am very comfortable postponing a fluid replacement.

@@terryclayton That's fair, you're entitled to do as you wish with your own vehicle. I'm a certified Mini Technician so I stand by factory recommendations for maintenance, and don't believe in advising people otherwise without proper justification.

@@cmazarii recently had my back brakes replaced at Mini/BMW (okay maybe 6months ago) and am now getting this warning light.. the fronts were replaced 2 years ago and I drive the car like 6k miles a year (currently sitting on 50k on 2017).. so I'm guessing brakes are great.. I'm about to embark on the fluid topping project.. thoughts?..
