The Triumph Tiger 900 Rally has proven to be a popular bike. The update to the Tiger 800 had to make a big jump to keep pace with its rivals and Triumph haven't dissapointed.
The new bike is better in almost every way. A great chassis, a much improved engine and a huge jump in the user experience make for a great bike. When you add in all the things that Triumph already did well, what you're left with is something very special.
I'd love to hear what you think about the shift in review style too. If you've got any feedback please feel free to comment down below!

Great video! I have two questions. 1st, did you turn the fork spring preload (knobs under the rebound/comp adjusters) all the way in for offroad as the manual recommends? (std is all the way out for on-road use). I found this made a significant difference in bottoming resistance and I just leave preload set all the way in for on-road use since it handles fine, I also stiffened the compression a bit which you mentioned but found the preload made a bigger difference. 2nd, at least the US bikes you only have to come to a stop (not shut the bike off) to go into offroad modes (still a bit annoying). Also, if you are in offroad mode and hold the mode button for 3 seconds it will switch to road mode even if you are riding/moving. Not sure if there is a difference between the US/UK bikes or if you tried this?
@BrakeMagazine
@BrakeMagazine 3 жыл бұрын
Hey, Great questions. We didn't have a manual or a spanner to make the adjustment. It's a great point you've made. I might pin your comment if that's okay? I can imagine it probably does help a lot. On our one I tried just stopping but it wouldn't change. It may be a difference between the Rally and the Rally Pro though? The switch back to road mode and through the road modes is seamless whist moving. Thanks for the awesome comments!
@CDBiker220
@CDBiker220 3 жыл бұрын
@@BrakeMagazine Feel free to pin. It does take a spanner to change the fork preload so not as easy to change on the fly like the comp/rebound adjusters. I think it's 20 full turns in for the offroad setting so it takes a while using a wrench, thus why I just leave it set for offroad all the time.

Hats of to your setting bro. Much better on and off the road. Thought an adventure bike should be soft but it feels way better. I have rear preload nearly all the way in too and rebound 1 turn from full in . Thanks bro

@@aloisio It might be worth changing the springs if you've got that much preload. It'll work better if the spring is stiffer with less preload.

Best review of the 900 I’ve seen. I own the 900 RP and pretty much agree with everything you said. I had to remove the silly black trim pieces on bottom of tank...bruised chin/knee also...much better with those gone! I think the bike is a solid 9.5 on road and a 8 Offroad. Great riding by the way 🤙🏽

Now you understand what adventure bike riding is really about. Getting from the start to the finish. Setting waypoints and achieving them. You know, basic motorcycling. I just bought this bike last year and it is my favorite bike. I'm 58 years old. Pack a tent and some food and go out with your buddies for 4 or 5 days. That's what this bike is about and it does it extremely well.

DearAl, Simon and Si Hewitt. Guys, thank you all so much for this (and all your videos on youtube, too) incredible video. As always, Al your neutral, real world reviews; the transition from the technique standpoint of the bike to the rider helps much more than all those repetitive crap out there. Thank you. The wisdom & experience of father and mates both are very well rounded up by you and transitioned to the audience so intuitive. I bought a 2022 Rally Pro before seeing your review. It was between it and the 890R. You really hit the nail on the head where you say the RP is good all around. It may not be as good on the dirt as the 890R but if you are doing longer road mileage it is worlds better on the pavement. With suspension tweaks you can make it better on the dirt but you are never going to get the long haul comfort out of the 890R. Thanks for the excellent review.

Really enjoyed watching your review. We've done over 10,000 miles now on the Tiger 900 Rally Pro and absolutely love it, so it's always interesting to see how other people rate it. We are mainly using it for long-distance travelling and the off-road we ride is generally not the most technical terrain so for us the suspension on the bike is absolutely fine, but that's because we don't ride it has hard off-road ;-P Great review - thanks!

You have the ability to come up with entertaining and very pleasing put together content. I think another person mentioned it in the comments as well. I've always liked your reviews. I ride a G650XChallenge because of your reviews. What I would like and possibly think you the only person to pull it off. Ride the 1200XE. Here's my pitch. I'm not keen on fancy gadgets and high screens. Put a story together, almost like your very clever now vs past series, and spin this 900 vs XE as both adventure bikes. One for the new aged person vs new aged retro. I will organise a watch party for that show. Thanks for Brake Magazine.

I may be a bit late to the party, but a great review testing the bike on its own merit. Ive just got a Rally Pro chopped in a tiger 1200 alpine and boy! What a difference. Ive had 5 800’s and 2 1200’s and the 900 is a vast improvement over 800. I love the new engine and as you stated you don’t need to rev the balls off it to progress. Yes there is a buzz but hey, ride any twin and tell me in all honesty that’s smoother.

Love your footage and music. Great video editing. Just a beautiful video overall. I have a couple requests for future videos. There are a lot of reviews that cover suspension, but almost none talk about the engine and transmission. Can you talk about: -Engine Vibration -1st gear ratio -6th gear ratio (is it geared properly for actual highway riding?) -Engine sound at low and high RPM? Is it a good sounding engine? Sound clips of drive-by at high RPM? -Transmission smoothness? -Clutch pull? -Engine Rattles? -Maintenance Intervals?

Great content as always. The review was really thorough, and the B-roll of you and your Dad (I think) riding through the Welsh countryside was a level of wholesome fun I didn't know I needed. It really makes me want to get out and get away for a weekend, but unfortunately there's still snow where I live. The Tiger is a bike I've been considering for a while, but as a newcomer to motorcycling who mostly goes solo I'm a bit hesitant about the size and weight of the bike. I wish they made a 450cc triple cylinder version that weighed under 350lbs fully fueled, but I doubt that will ever happen. In the meantime I will just have to stick to dual sports until I get more confident. Keep up the good work. The cinematography and aerial drone footage have really taken a step up, by the way.

Been waiting for this! Love these in depth reviews from you. And man I am jealous of the trails you get to legally ride over there on the island! Personally I have a Tiger 800 XCA and I ride it somewhat ambitiously offroad more and more as I gain experience and skill. I haven't had the pleasure of trying the new 900 yet, but overall it looks like Triumph has addressed most of the things that "ambitious" offroad riders of the old 800 are/were unhappy with. And in doing so, they've made a truly worthy successor it seems. One that still delivers the same sort of experience overall, of a bike that can really do anything like you said, and is super smooth and well built/finished, but now much more capable off the beaten paths. They've also clearly spent much more attention on the details. Also it looks like it's much easier to wheelie, instant bonus points ;) For people who don't like the "dirtbikey" feel of the 790, this looks like pretty much the best option out there in its weight class. I think I can still see a couple of things I'd have done differently if it were my decision, but some of those will probably down to the bottom line - the "meh" rear shock being one of them. I have two Q&A questions: 1. How do you like the steering head angle? Is it a good balance of offroad manageability and on road sharpness? The 800's was a touch too steep, makes it a hell of a bitch to ride on really soft ground like deep loose gravel or sand. On the other hand I don't like the super flat angles some other bikes have either. 2. if you could change one thing on the bike, what would it be? Includes anything and everything.

Great review, thankyou for the longer offroad views as it's great to get a feel for where you are riding rather than just "exciting" shots. I have an 800xc and the best money I've spent on it - hands down - was to have the suspension redone by a specialist. Replaced some bits, changed the oil viscosity and did other stuff. Revolutionised the bike. Turns out you don't need adjustable suspension if it's done right. I think describing the Tiger (my 800 at least) as "Easy" is the perfect summary. It's not as aggressive as my mate's KTM but it's not as demanding either. Love my 800, only problem is that it's not wearing out fast enough ... I'll be waiting a bit longer for my 900.

@@bp4346 Had the suspension done by a specialist workshop in Adelaide - if you can afford it, its a way better option than replacing springs. Bit springs is a start, but pay attention to valve rates and oil viscosity. More compression and rebound control was important than just heavier springs (which is were a specialist comes in)

Fantastic review - no complaints! There’s an awful lot of stuff to figure out in this bike, especially without the manual. I have the Rally Pro, and if I want to keep the bike in Offroad mode while shutting the bike down, I use the start/stop switch instead of the key, as it will retain the current mode setting. I assume it works the same on the Rally. Of all the extra bits you gain with the Pro, my favorite by far is the quick shifter. That’s an amazing piece of technology as far as I’m concerned, and works incredibly well up or downshifting. If you haven’t had an opportunity to try it, I’d really recommend seeking one out.

The Tiger bikes are the greatest looking ADV bikes. They are stunningly beautiful. I am still not sold on the sound of the T-Plane crank. The old triples sounded so beautiful, and had that rich inline 6 sound. From what I've heard, the new T-Plane engine is rougher, and more rough running. It has an odd firing order that has odd firing intervals, which gives it a weird uneven sound. Some people say they have taken one test drive on the new T-Plane engine and it was far too rough. I don't think that it was a good idea for Triumph to completely change their legendary triple engine. I am praying that they go back to the original crankshaft configuration.

I've got 5000 50/50 miles on my RP in Colorado. 56 year old with 45 years of riding 50/50 experience. Lose the plastic bits with 2 bolts each side of frame to get rid of you're booboos. The off road mode is set to previous by pushing mode then check. You don't have to turn the bike off either. I wish reviewers would learn the systems before they criticize them. It is the most capable straight across all surfaces of any bike I have ever owned and I have owned a lot of them.

But it eats the trails, goes where you point it, handles as well as the tyres allow on the road. It's a heavier dirt bike really, You could do an enduro on it if you were very fit and very good. But I couldn't.

I'm back and forth on the GT Pro and the Rally Pro. Quite a bit taller and not sure the Rally is the best choice for me, doing 90% of my running around IN the city, in and outs etc etc. I checked them both out side by side, and throwing a leg over the Rally is much more of an action than the GT. But I love the Rally and the idea of trails/adventure etc but, how much am I really doing? Might get the GT and throw on the Perelli Off Road Rally Scorpian STRs.

I was pretty much convinced that i should buy a T7 until i watched this video and read the comments. Where i live the price difference between a base T7 and a 900 Rally Pro is 5000$. If considering a T7 World Raid the difference is only 2000$. The pendulum swings towards Triumph 🤔
@BrakeMagazine

It depends on what you wanna do in the long run, but the Tiger 900 is a very good bike. At that price, it might also be worth looking at the Desert X.

Very nice to see this review I enjoyed it a lot thanks! I would like to ask how is it compared to the t7 off-road. Is it as nimble? Hope tiger's suspensions are much better, are they? Than you!
@BrakeMagazine
@BrakeMagazine 3 жыл бұрын
That's really tricky to say as it's a while since I rode a T7, more than a year now. I 'think' they probably feel quite similar surprisingly. They will handle different but not dissimilar, both have smooth easy engines. The T7 might be a little lighter feeling, and slightly more but I'd be surprised if the Tiger's suspension was a lot better. I reckon they're probably quite close, with the Tiger having a stronger engine. Like I said, until we can group test them it's tricky to say.

25:00 : I'm not sure what you describe, or if it is specific to UK bikes, but I have the 900 GT Pro and I can change modes while riding. You just have to cut throttle to confirm after selection.
@BrakeMagazine
@BrakeMagazine 3 жыл бұрын
No, it's only the change to off-road mode that it does this. You can change all of the street modes while riding fluidly. It's very nicely done.

Great review mate! Agreed on all points. It's been a perfect long distance ADV setup for me and has taken me as far south (Nicaragua) as covid will allow in comfort and security. I did a very long (9 hour) day of rather difficult off road in Mexico that I could have done in 7 hours on the 990 adv but then the Tiger Rally (Pro) is a much better tool for the highway. You like that reversible rear brake toe piece? Also, nice dirty hobo you found to follow you! lol

Nice review. I think the suspension issue you had is sorted out with the rally pro, that has more ground clearance, full adjustability, but wlso taller weat of corse. I am considering this bike as my first adventure allround bike. I come from 6 years of street riding, i currently own a 2019 versys 1000 but i think i want to have a go on some easy offroading, and don t want to go to the big bikes, as they are to heavy. Will it make for a good introduction to adventure riding? 😁

Great video, I want to know how it compares to the R1250GS? Leaning toward the BMW for better touring with a passenger. Is the BMW better off-road too? Or is the lighter 900 a better choice? I know the obvious compare is an 850GS to the 900 but in my mind I am trying to decide between the 900 and the R1250GS.

24:50 stopping the bike and turning the engine off to change modes.... sounds silly but this really puts me off! Just wanna keep riding. I'd like to have the safety kit on the bike but I wish they'd make it easy to disable... Honda had the right idea on the 2016 to 2019 ATs

Hello, i just discovered you and love your way of thinking. Simply, you got my trust. One question if I may. I’m in between tiger 900 rally pro and gs 850. How would you compare them when it comes to road and off road performance. Which one is more agile? And what do you think about long term reliability. I know bmw is good but their new engine is from China, making me hesitate about trust issue. Hope you reply

I've done a few hundred miles off road on my Rally. The traction control is the biggest flaw IMO. It's still too aggressive even in offroad mode and it the way it cuts power and then slams it back on gives you this weird surging/lurching cycle on loose surfaces. I wish there was something between the current "off road" TC which is garbage and completely disabling TC.
