Onan makes a great generator if owners would maintain them according to the owners manual. It may have nine hours of use, but how long has it been installed? They must be run monthly once fueled.

You have to find a place to fix it. But most place that will work on them (CamperWorld type places) will tell you there are 14 other vehicles ahead of you in line for repairs/maintenance/service. But don't worry they should be able to get to you in a few months. Although it does look like there are a couple of cummings service centers in Phoenix. Probably would not hurt to call them to see about warranty service. BUT typically for RV work, they have lots of work backed up, and you might be waiting a long time for them to get to your issue.

I've been working on my Onan for over 2 years. 2 new carbs, new fuel pump, 3 new spark plugs, I've seen every code in the book. One thing for you to check, my sisters class C had mice that chewed holes in the rubber fuel line just outside the truck tank. Gen would start, run out of fuel sucking air. Grab fuel can full of fuel, use a 3 or 4 ft piece of 1/4 new fuel line, connect underneath gen at the fuel pump, other end into gas can. Prime until fuel fills float bowel and start. If problem cleared inspect your fuel line back to tank. Also, unplug existing fuel line going into carb, run fuel pump to prime, if strong flow of fuel pump is ok, if it dribbles pump might be bad. Or, do like me, toss the gen and buy a 4,000 watt solar generator with 1,000 watts worth of panels. Worst thing people can do to a generator, not use it. Especially with our fuel our government insists on mixing with corn. I never have any problems with my toy hauler, I only fill it with corn-free fuel, my class C is the pain in the ass.

My 1981 tioga has original Onan 3000 with 280 hours and works every time. I mainly use it for is for the original air conditioner. I think quality now days is the problem with every product.

I had problems with my Onan too. In Quartzsite, I found the one guy in the country that was able to fix it. It ran well for years after his repair. An RV repair shop in Brenda gave me his name.

Have you checked the altitude setting on the Onan? I had a friend up in 6000ft alt that was having issues like that and I adjusted the altitude knob and it ran like butter.

You'd think these two guys would think of that. But, the shop for the dealership I bought from didn't figure that out either for mine. They were gonna sell me a new one, but then I remembered that I'd recorded their tech on the vehicle tour adjusted it... Or misadjusted it. Simple fix after they spent two days with the vehicle. We found our that there a recall on brand new ones. They had to send a tech out to us with special cables to reprogram the board, and tell it what it was.. working like a charm ever sense. It only had 1 hour on it . Took 3 techs and a visit to Cummins in Arizona to figure it out.. the tech actually told us he was training others on this problem .

Eric, My Onan did the same thing. For me it was something in the fuel tank, which I have not fixed yet. Somehow it would no longer draw fuel from the tank. Like something in the tank broke or let loose as far as the fuel line to generator. I figured this out by taking a 5 gallon stand alone fuel can, took an extra fuel line I had and put it directly onto the fuel pump that comes out the side of the generator. Take the gas line that is connected to the generator fuel pump into the 5 gallon gas tank. my Onan generator would run until the 5 gallon tank was empty. Put the fuel line into a fresh 5 gallon tank and it would run until that was empty. So for me it turns out that its NOT the actual generator, but something to do with how it draws fuel from the main gas tank. Try this to see if it works for you......

Check the fuel line from the fuel tank for cracks, leaks? It sounds like carburetor is losing its prime. Maybe check for loose fuel fittings at the tank? Rodents may have gnawed at the fuel line?

PLEASE READ! Clean the carb, they stop up real quick if sitting even for a few weeks. I had the gas line on my Class C get weak and collapse when the gen starts pumping. Did exactly what yours is doing. Run a line into a gas can a see if it will run ok. Could they have replaced the gen and the problem was a gas line??

I have an Onan QD6000, QD is Quiet Diesel, 6000 watts, 7 years old, 1,400 hours and it has never failed me. I do maintenance every 150 hours. Didn't you once had the problem where the generator would run for awhile then stop and after trying several fixes, you finally found it was an easy fix?

Ok. I’ve had 2 different Rv’s with Onan Generators and have been fortunate enough to only have one issue with either one. But the problem was with me and what I did when I changed the oil. When I changed the oil and I moved the throttle spring over when I put in new oil. I forgot to put it back in place when I was done. The generator started but would not keep running. I found it and for the next 3 years had no problems. Best of luck on your generator.

You need to run these generators often. Also,key is using a high tech gasoline stabilizer,like PRI-G . The ethenol in untreated gasoline pulls water to it,creating layers of gunk in carburetors + fuel injection systems. Also,change gas filters to generator.

My almost 20 yr old onan generator had problems staying on. It turned out to be a small leak in the gas line. I took it to a specialized onan technician to figure out the probably, after I spent hundreds of dollars at a rv dealership who failed to diagnose the problem.

When I was a generator mechanic in the army, there was a toggle switch. One side was for auto start , the other side was for manual start with a pull rope, if the switch was in the wrong direction, it would not run. Just an idea. Hope this works.

Eric. Remember Generac is owned by Onan. So be aware of that. You might check for water in the fuel. We had an onan 4000 found it to be water in the fuel. We used HEET in the fuel, to help dry it out. Then we had to drain the fuel, and start from scratch.

I can recommend the Predator 3500 from Harbor Freight. I have almost 1000 hours on mine and its run well. Not perfect or without issue (no electric start w/ a frayed pull start) but I run it days at a time while at Dega and it works perfectly and never lets us down. Good luck!!

Our Onan Gen is 14 years old. Still working like a champ. Just kept clean oil in it, changed the plugs & filter constantly and changed the carburetor once. Still working like a charm.👍☺️

you probably have the gen set fixed by now but a code 36 usually has to do with fuel. My problem was a bad fuel pump. One other thing I found was that when I prime the system for a count of 30 (seems like forever) it always works.

Eric, I have the same generator, and had the same problem. Found out the oil dipstick is faulty, the generator detects too much oil and shuts down. You have to take enough oil out to the line on dipstick that says add oil, and that's actually full. It will probably start right up. Mine did. Now I always keep it at the add oil line and it has run great for a long time now.

My parents bought a 1972 Winnebago brand new back in the day, and it had a Onan 3800KW generator in it that was always messing up. We had to replace the carb/governor all the time because it would either get stuck on choke or would not maintain the right speed under load.

I have the same generator in my 83 Wanderlodge and the code 36 directly applies to the fuel system. My issue was my installation missed an old fuel filter inline that was clogged. They put in a new one but missed the old one. The fuel pumps are horrible for those as well

The Onan I had in my last RV was VERY touchy about gumming up the carb if not run every day or two. I let it set fo two or three months once and it would not start. Since the carbs are sealed, I had to buy a new one (what a pain to replace). It started first time, but I then used both Stabil and SeaFoam gas treatment and never had another issue. Try adding a bunch of SeaFoam to the gas and kept trying to run it a little at a time. See if it won't clean it out.

My last Onan ran great every time not one hick-up. My current Onan Diesel 8K runs even better, I have 1300 hours on it now and it starts and runs for hours at a time. I think one problem people have with them is not running them under load for 2 to 3 hours at a time at a minimum once a month. I also have a Honda 3k that seems to be hard to start 6 or 7 pulls unless it is warm I don't work that one enough is its problem. Call Onan and check on the warranty. Good luck.

Disconnect the oil pressure switch and then ground the wire to the block of the motor. See if it stays running. If that fixes the problem make sure your oil level is correct and then replace the oil pressure switch.

I've found that mine runs best when the oil is a little low. I need to have it at the bottom of the hash marks on the dipstick.

There's a KZbin video I came across that helped my onan 4000 run. The advice was to not follow the oil line they provide and to take a turkey baster and suction out a pint of oil. My onan magically started. 😊

Instead of bashing Onan, find a local Cummins dealer that services Onan generators. Because it's new, it will be under warranty! I had a similar issue with the one that came with our toy hauler. It would run for 15-20 minutes, then shut down. Turns out it was a bad carburator. Cummins replaced it free under warranty. I was also told to run strictly ethanol free gas. Small engines DO NOT like fuel with ethanol. 🤷

Sorry you are having so many problems with the generator. We have had Onan in 3 different RV’s over the years and never had any problems. My husband would exercise the unit for 1 hour every 4-6 weeks under full load. You are just jinxed. I wish you luck. 😮

You don’t need to get rid of your Onan. Buy some carb cleaner and some VP Performance fuel. I got mine working again. I got an Onan tune up kit from Amazon. It needed it anyway. But that still wasn’t the problem. I considered replacing the carburetor. Instead I bought a can of VP fuel from Tractor Supply. I bought a 2ft or so piece of fuel line. I installed the spark plug and gas filter from the kit. On the gas tank side of the Onan fuel filter I installed the 2ft fuel line and put the other end in the VP can. The air filter cover was not installed yet. Spray carb cleaner into carburetor and turn over the generator. When it sounds like it’s going to die, quickly spritz more carb cleaner. While doing this, VP fuel is being drawn into the engine. VP is 94 octane straight fuel. No ethanol. The carb cleaner and VP dissolved the gum a little at a time. When it could stay running on its own I left it run for an hour then shut it off and let it sit overnight. The next day it fired up no problem but sounded a little rough yet so I used my can of VP as the fuel source again, not needing carb cleaner this time. I let the generator run for an hour again, shut it down and let it sit overnight. By the next morning it ran fine so I connected the regular gas line again. It’s been fine ever since.

Code 36 means the engine stopped without a shutdown command from the Genset control panel. This could be caused by a bad fuel pump, clogged filter, crimped fuel line, dirty carb, out of fuel, etc. You will first want to check for these potential causes on the fuel system side and mechanical side of your generator.

Like someone said below , Yank the Onan out and wire in a Harbor Freight Predator . Simple maintaining and you shouldn't have any more problems . My Onan in my 1992 motorhome is a beast , but , the date says it all . This one is a 32 year old Onan ( not one of these new junkers they make ) . I put a new spark plug in it every year and change the oil every year ( or 200 hours ) and never failed me so far . Owned the motorhome for ten years now . Oh and once a month if not in use I run it for three hours under a load to keep things lubed up and the rings wet .

After that rant, IF you can fix the problem are you going to recant your condemnation.? I am not there, but I have seen problems like this that have stumped many good mechanics. If I were there and had my tools the first thing I would do is take the fuel line off and run a line to a small 1 gallon gas tank I took off of an old lawnmower decades ago , hold the tank up high as the hose would let me and try to start it. And let it run long enough that I would know the problem is or isn't in the engine on the generator and if not trace the fuel lines back to the tank to see if there is a pinhole in it anywhere. If it wont run with the tank held high giving it fuel then you know the problem is the engine on the generator and make the guy that sold it to you eat it. While you have a little pressure on the carb you can see if it is flooding out because of a little dirt or something under the needle valve in the carb. IF it runs with fuel from a tank as described check all fuel lines, make sure that if the RV has an electric pump supplying fuel to the genset that the pump is 100% too much pressure is just as bad as not enough pressure.

I'll have to look at the paperwork to get the address. It's one of those ext roads that crosses over Nova and goes down to Ridgewood Ave. It's in a ent a bldg park.

Eric, it sounds like it may be fuel supply issue. On a rig as old as yours I would not be surprised that the fuel filter going to the genny is clogged. I don't know, I'm not there but I would check the simple stuff first. Good luck.

On the Onan….Apparently, There is a TSB230226 (Tech Service Bulletin) that resolves a “vapor lock” issue and throwing a code 36. Wondering if this is the case.

If its gass it sounds like it is eating up whats pressure is in the fuel line if fuel injected and if carb it sounds like its eating up whats in the fuel bowl so fuel pump might have air or be clogged start by checking vacume lines then move on to the electrical try making sure there is no load when you first start up so it cause the gen coil to move easier sorry for the confussion i thought you had a desel

I heard that they shipped with too much oil in them. My hubby googled and that’s why it shuts down. Reduce the oil and it should be fine!!!! Hope it saves you a ton of $$$$$ and time. Good luck!!! Vicki

I have a 24 year old Tioga with a 4000 W Onan. At the moment, my gas is too low to run it, bit I have never had any problem with it. Maybe getting a good one is a fluke.😊

Not a fluke at all. Our 6000 watt Onan in our ‘13 Thor palazzo has had almost 800 hours put on it since we bought the coach in ‘21 with ZERO problems.

Knock knock on wood 😂 I’ve had 4 used motorhomes in the last 4 years and never had any problems with my generators, they all ran perfectly and the one in my winnebago now runs perfect as long as you keep enough gas. Generators don’t like you.

It ain't backwards. You got yourself a much better RV than what you had previously. It requires work to get it up to par, but that's because Par for your RVs is set very high. It's got to be a full time Power HOUSE. :)

Harbor Freight had a SALE which ended last night, and guess what they had 😮? PREDATOR 3500 Watt SUPER QUIET Inverter Generator. Perfect for most Class C motorhomes. I had my eye on this for a while. Thought I was going to get one for sure when I got my '88 Lazy Daze Class C. My RV Tech rebuilt my on board ONAN Generator instead. Purrs like a kitten. But... I've always liked that PREDATOR 3500. Just last year, I think it was over $900. Through last night, it was on sale for $699.00 I've never seen it that low! You'll land on your feet like all cats do... thanks to Wayne!
