Actually, I'd say what makes Gyaos Gamera's arch nemesis is the fact that he's the most memorable antagonist kaiju in the series. On top of being a giant bat that shoots a laser from its mouth, Gyaos is malevolent and sadistically cruel. Sure, Gamera may have killed millions of Tokyo residents during his first appearance, but their deaths were all relatively quick. Gyaos slices into Gamera's arm with his ray and then *continues to do so for several minutes*. I's not enough that he's injured his opponent, Gyaos wants to revel in their pain! That kind of cruelty tends to stick in people's minds through out the years.

MasterSeijin I think that the Heisei trilogy established Gyaos as Gamera's arch enemy. They were both genetically engineered by the Atlanteans, and Gamera was made specifically to destroy the Gyaos. In fact, the Legion are the only enemy he faces that aren't Gyaos - Iris was a highly evolved Gyaos. He's shown to actively hunt Gyaos down in the first and third films, and is so intent on wiping them out that he kills at least two people during his battle with the Super Gyaos in Tokyo, and later kills hundreds, if not thousands of people while battling the two Hyper Gyaos. And, the final scene of the trilogy is Gamera, crippled after his battle with Iris, preparing to fight a swarm of hundreds of Hyper Gyaos. The Gyaos in that trilogy also came across as sadistic, with the Super Gyaos being a cannibal and shown eating people, seemingly smiling. Obviously it's just their natural behaviour and their appearance, but the impression is still there.

One thing Brandon skipped over is that there's an important reason for Gamera to bite Gyoas on the neck. the logic behind Gyoas's ray attack is that it's a breath weapon. A crushed windpipe actually prevents it from working.

I think what's so funny about it is one of the scientists comes up with a very logical plan of using powerful UV lights to subdue / kill Gyaos. If they didn't work (which would be stupid but they tried spinning him so...) they could have just wait until the day use / make a giant magnifying glass (which would be way less expensive & wasteful then the spinning thing) and probably cut him in half.

According to what I've read in the past, the use of purple blood in the Gamera movies was to make them slightly less gory! But on a black and white TV back in the 70s, it didn't make much of a difference, I was still a little grossed out!
