I’ve owned a 2012 and it was a phenomenal experience and ride. I enjoyed the bike all the way around. It stayed garaged and only rode it in Arizona winter months. Unfortunately I was hit by an SUV in 2019 and it was totaled out. I’d buy another one, but I dislike the two tone colors of the 19/20.

I went through this with a 2005 Rocket 3, i think I was depressed at the time and wanted the biggest monster I could afford. I had to lobby Triumph to get the secret recall done which was a full pull down of the motor to replace gear shift parts and a tail shaft bearing. The bike goes well now and been sitting in my garage for years with less than 20k on it. When I rarely ride it, there's always someone who wants to talk about it, it's like an event riding something so big and with so much torque it still gives me a high every time i pull from the lights, i still love it.

Stuck around for the whole video because I was so interested. I picked up a 2016 gray B.O.S.S. in 2017 and I love it. No really issues so far, had some new tires thrown on and dyno tuned it since I added K&N filters and bored out the exhaust baffles. Reslly helped out my horsepower and torque curves (110hp and 100 ft/lbs, respectively). Now it's time for me to start on the visual mods, and then toss on a new exhaust for a meaner exhaust tone.

I'm just going to play devils advocate here.....isn't it possible the previous owner wasn't aware of the problem? Of course, that's likely not the case.....but it IS entirely possible. I owned a 2007 with the 2nd gear failure and I was able to ride it around without an issue so long as I did not accelerate hard in 2nd gear. Maybe he rode it like a girl.....just sayin

Thanks for sharing you advice. I made a similar mistake many years ago with a Benelli 750 Sei, and I did take it for a test drive. It cut out on me but started again easily. I have fallen for it by then and still bought it. Had one electrical issue after another and got rid of it after a year. Was a lovely machine when it went smoothly. Never actually broke down, but was annoying... Good to be reminded to be careful.

i tried to get that muffler twice from parts giant and they kept sending me the silver one, still debating if i should try to get it again. Anyway did you had to modify adjust anything after you installed the muffler? And those lights are crazy. I have the 2019 M90 Boulevard

Nah, you can put these on and ride without damaging anything. Can reach better performance with an ECM flash, though.

I had a 2006 M109R from 2016 to about 2.5 years later. Brought it from about 6k miles to 21k miles during that time. I absolutely loved the way it looked, especially with the Yani Shiki blade levers and spiked grips and pegs I installed, and loved the way it sounded and all the power, but ended up dropping quite a lot of money and time on repairs. I replaced the entire clutch. A separate time the clutch cable snapped and replaced that, I also eventually developed the leaky forky and had to take those completely apart to replace a cheap seal at the bottom, and in the end I had an overheating issue whenever sitting at stop lights that I was never able to resolve even after replacing the thermostat and having a garage do some other troubleshooting on the cooling system. I continued to ride it almost daily with the overheating issue going on the last year I had the bike because I could never resolve it and it didn't overheat unless I found myself sitting at stoplights for extended periods from thick inner-city traffic. So I just stuck to highways as much as possible. The last thing I had to replace was the key cylinder that someone in my neighborhood ripped out trying to hotwire and steal the thing. I found my bike downhill from where I had parked it with the key cylinder gutted and wires splayed out. At least it had an engine turnover override in the computer when it doesn't have a certain resistance coming from the key cylinder even though it was a 12-year-old bike at that point. That was it for me. Bought a used key cylinder and key for it on eBay, installed that bitch and sold the darn thing for what I could get for it which ended up being $2,800. Despite all this I would actually consider getting another one sometime down the road, but it would have to be a comparatively newer one. And I'd have to do research and find that the kinks from the older models have been worked out.

Early 06-08 were likely. Maybe 10%. Nothing wrong with getting an early model. Just test ride it thoroughly if getting it from a private party.

Bought a VK2 4 yrs Go. 12000ks. 1st 2nd gear issues. Clunks in 1st. Clatters in 2nd. Adj the clutch changed. Oil. Same. But it doesn't jumps on out. Of 2nd. No debris in oil. Double theinclutch into 2nd seems ok. ? Is any others like this

I will forever be curious about the M109R. I had two bikes I wanted when I got back into riding. They were the M109R and the VTX 1800. I had actually all but decided on the M109R and then out of the blue, had a deal fall into my lap for a VTX 1800 I couldn't pass up. Bought the VTX....customised the heck out of it. Love the bike....not complaints what so ever. But damn if I'm not still itching for an M109R.

I always use Mobil 1 V-Twin oil. I’m sure others have good experience with other oil. Just make sure you get the oil change right.

Interesting vid, but this is not about the M109R being a bad bike. Mine is a 2007 (same colour, same spec as the one you got shafted with) and I totally love it. It’s never let me down. This is could be about ANY bike, they are all machines and machines need proper maintenance and can’t be abused without limits or they break down . Even a Honda :) For the record I also have a Kawasaki Z1000SX Sports Tourer which is a great bike, in many ways more practical & versatile... and yet if I could keep only one it would be the M109R without question. If you’d been talking about it’s size and weight, or its cornering limitations, I’d have understood more... but people in the market for this bike aren’t going to be bothered by that, or they wouldn’t be into cruisers in the first place. Effortless power, smooth fuel injection, comfort, and nice seat height, and even handling (if you allow for the size and ground clearance) and of course its sheer presence..... the M109R (or M1800R or VZR1800 as it’s called here in the UK) is an awesome bike.

Lol, I never said it wasn't an awesome bike. I got the title correct. It's the worst bike I've owned simply from the added expense of fixing a gearing issue. You can still have a bad experience and love the thing that caused it. And everyone who disliked the video missed the entire point. People were burned by the second gear issue and I made the video so people hopefully wouldn't make my mistake. That issue shouldn't have been there to begin with on the 109.

@@aleksandrokolodko3592 Yes, it makes sense. I jumped from having a CB600R for a couple of years, to the M109R (M1800R in Europe.) The difficult bit was the physical handling of the bike on the driveway and yard, as it is double the weight; but when you’re sat on it, the low seat height compensates (I’m 5’8”:and can easily flat foot it at the lights.) Once you’re on the move, the weight melts away and you soon get the feel of it. It would probably be easier for you, coming from a middleweight cruiser you will already be used to the riding position and the lower ground clearance etc (I was coming from a sports bike, so it felt weird at first.) It’s a huge step up in power, but I always say the bike is only as powerful as your wrist wants it to be and I rode mine well within its limits for the first couple of months while I grew accustomed to it.

No issues on the newer ones. Suzuki fixed it after 08s, but there were still some models after that with weird issues like clutch shudder.

Good video and sorry for your bad experience. I own a 06 M109R and it couldn't be better. Sounds like the shift star was needing to be replaced. Its a common problem with that bike and far less that $2500 to fix. Bike stand and a couple of hours would've knocked it out. Curious? Have you been in contact with the guy you sold it to? Wondering if that was the fix.

Nah, no contact after the sell. Could've been a shift star or the fork, but it would pop out of gear after a successful shift. If I did it again today, I'd be prepared to tear it apart myself to find out.

Only problem i had on mine was the clutch shudder which was easily fixable. The bike is powerfull and my advice is to never go full power from 1st to 2nd. Just shift earlier to 2nd and then in second you are good to go

Mine has clutch shidd from time to time, actually. Never did the forum fix. Was gonna tackle it when I change the clutches out at some point. But always go full send from 1st to 2nd.. That's the fun of it 😅

06-08 were most common. Some have seen it on a few years after that, but definitely the 06-08s. Was a hit or miss, though. I know a bunch of people with those years including myself that didn't have the problem.

Bought an 06 and thankfully I was a "hit or miss" that the 2nd gear problem missed! Had about 3k miles when I bought it from a dealer, but I would only agree to the purchase if they gave me some kind of warranty. The salesman said they dont usually give warranties, but when I googled the problem and showed him he understood my concern and have me a 30 day warranty on the tranny. Like Brandon said, I rode the PISS out of it for those 30 days and confirmed there were no 2nd gear issues. Great video Brandon. Love the play on the worst/best bike you've owned being the two 109's. Dainese Airflux. Had it for about 4 years now. Fits like a loose t-shirt but has shoulder/elbow protection. Does get hot, but it's mesh so not as bad. The day I had my accident in 2018, I didn't wear it because of the heat even though it has a minimal footprint. So, I wear it still.

Just curious, but what kind of seat do you have on that blue/white bike? It looks deeper and a lot more comfortable than the stock or the wide cut gel seats. I have the 08 LE and got rid of the stock right away for the Suzuki carbon fiber look gel seat. Though it isn’t perfect it has been a night and day difference with a backrest as well. I am now looking for the next best thing and though I love the look of Corbin, it’s hard to justify a grand for one seat and one backrest. Thank you in advance for the information.

With 5 miles? That depends on who's selling. A dealer is gonna charge top dollar. A private seller probably won't charge as much. I'd say a few grand more than book value (7-9k). You're looking at more than 10K I'm thinking.

Bought a 78 Yamaha 750 special, 3 cyl. New in 78. A few yrs later, 2nd gear went out. Just drove it like that for yrs. Got a 92 Vmax, bought it like 17 yrs ago, 2nd gear went out in it. I still ride it with no 2nd gear.

@@BrandonBicasso yes, the brain and, fuel scensor went out. Had to replace them, and rewire and replace the fuel pump . Replace and redirect wires in power box in battery. box and got a tune up. For $100 plus parts . Rode it to work last week.

Loved my M50. Unless you just want a new model, I'd get a pre-owned or previous year from a dealer. Might save you a good amount of coin if that's a thought. They're super reliable when treated right. Newer models really after 2010 are rid of the issues I mentioned.

Great information about the problem and a honest review. One suggestion...ya got to learn to work on them yourself ...they are VERY easy to work on and doing that job yourself is a mere small fraction of the dealer quote. Fork seals are super easy and super cheap to do yourself. To successfully flip anything...you have to be able to utilize yourself to absorb costs.

Yeah honestly they are very easy to work on. Good luck with the seals! A little research on the job can also go a long way if needed. Take your time, stay organized, take pictures on your phone if needed to remember how you took it apart and good luck!!

I keep reading and watching things on the 109R and it seems to be a tough fun machine. Owners really like it. I'm even toying with the idea of getting one. Used. Which years should I avoid looking at and which years were the colored black. I like the chrome and black color the best. Thank you.

I don't own a car. I ride my 2019 Suzuki Boulevard M109r to work, shops, everywhere. I ride on weekends with my motorcycle club. in 3 years, I've done 22,000+ km (serviced every 6,000km). Still love it, never had any faults since I drove it out of the shop. I have no hesitation in recommending the M109r for anyone interested in a big bike for a smaller price (compared to harley/indian/bmw/etc). I guess it helps being the only owner and knowing every detail of your machine. When you look good, you ride better, you feel good :)

What a waste of time. Brandon, your title discourages other potential riders from getting this bike because. You know is a great bike and you still ride one. This is a specific issue with this particular bike and not all M109rs.. Anyway. Real nice video with a lot of good advice. I too bought a bike without test riding (a '88 Katana 1100) where the guy had no plate or insurance on the bike. It hadn't been on the road in probably a few years although he told me one. The bike that cost me $1900.00 (Canadian) pulled like it had 20 hp instead of the 136 it was supposed to and the clutch drag was awful. Finding neutral was almost impossible, and shifting wasn't great either. About $1200.00 (CDN) later it's a great machine and I have no regrets, ... but had I been able to test ride originally I would never have bought it. All in all I have about $3300.00 (CDN) or about $2400.00 (US) wrapped up in a 32 year old machine that has 114,000 kilometres on it and really is in pretty nice shape.

The correlation is clear. Early model M109Rs had transmission issues. I bought one that had a transmission issue that should’ve been recalled. It’s the worst bike I’ve owned from a mechanical standpoint. Doesn’t mean I don’t enjoy riding it. A quick google search “M109R transmission” shows the frustration and challenges owners had to go through with this issue.

I haven't. However, I recently changed my clutch and has some video on it. It's not hard to get to that piece to change if it's an issue.

It could be your tub nut is loose but those do have a small amount of play. Not supposed to rattle. Check the tub nut. Basket could be loose on the gear side which is a big problem.

There is a large number of people with 2nd gear slip in Suzuki forums with this model. The worst part of this is, they are saying it was a manufacturing issue that should be covered by warranty. Given this is a Safty concern built into the bike and not a wear issue, one would think the honest thing to do would be to cover it on warranty as a call back defect. Personally I will stay clear of Suzuki bike after reading that.

Yeah, Suzuki slipped off with the 109 and quietly fixed it. Some people were able to get it covered under warranty but you were SOL if you got it second handed since it was never given a recall. I'd still buy a Suzuki after that event, though. I'd hope they learned from that along with my personal decision making.

The seat is made by Ultimate! And yes, it is a lot more comfortable than stock. Most I've put on it is about 500 miles in a day. Could've kept going.

Also, you didn’t mention your level of expertise in evaluating or repairing motorcycles, but I wouldn’t invest in anything that I didn’t have intimate knowledge of how it worked. This is what started the modification process with mine. I lost 2nd gear at 26000km. 09 model, instead of replacing the broken parts with stock stuff I decided to beef up the transmission. Full back cut gearset, billet rods and forks. New shift drum etc etc, fortunately they share a lot of parts with hayabusas so it was all available. At that point I was about 6k into the bike and the idea of twin turbos was something me and a friend had been talking about for a year or so and started to look viable now I had a transmission that could cope. The rest is history I guess

I know I shouldn't judge a manufacturer on the crappiness of one model, and way back in the '80's I had three GS1100e's that were great. Then I bough a '90 Katana 1100. Big mistake. The thing ate fork seals every year ($500 installed) and there'd be carb issues every two years or so. I kept the thing for eight miserable years, then sold it to the highest bidder. Somehow that was my last Suzuki for many years. I was thinking of succumbing to the lure of the M109R. You brought me to my senses. Thank you :-)

A lot of bikes had that problem, sometimes just fully seating second works, could be bent shifter pallls. A guy gave me a bike, took $1600 to run it, a couple years passed bought a new bike, gave away the same bike to someone, who called me and said, it took $1600 to get it running....hope he gave it to someone else!!

I have tested 3 of them and 2 had that issue and almost got rear ended pulling off at a light, the third needed tires, fork seals and had a weird random thump that shook the whole bike and only at 60mph so i passed on them and finally bought an 05 V2K
