I wish the episode had continued to the Transfiguration, which happens right after this scene. Most likely, Jesus takes Peter/James/John up Mt. Hermon (which had been associated with divine rebellion - Genesis 6:1-4, and other activities of supernatural evil). This is Jesus' "shot across the bow" so to speak, before he heads to Jerusalem to be crucified. The powers of darkness are put on notice, their time is coming. Highly recommend reading Dr. Michael Heiser's book "The Unseen Realm" and "Reversing Hermon" to learn more "After six days Jesus took with him Peter, James and John the brother of James, and led them up a high mountain by themselves. There he was transfigured before them. His face shone like the sun, and his clothes became as white as the light." (Matthew 17:1-2) "We do, however, speak a message of wisdom among the mature, but not the wisdom of this age or of the rulers of this age, who are coming to nothing. ... None of the rulers of this age understood it, for if they had, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory." (1 Cor 2:6-8)

Pastor Robbins, This was an immensely informative video, as are most of yours. In these very troubling and uncertain times, many sermons and messages are centered around defeating the evil one. For myself, just when I feel my efforts to make Satan 'scram' are working, he gets mottals to , perhaps, unwittingly attack my faith. We all need to remember, as you were saying, the gates of hell are everywhere. We must be alert and pratoce reminding evil that we are children of God, washed by the precious blood of Jesus and given the authority to tell Satan and his minions to "Go!'.❤

Brandon, thank you so much for sharing this video with us. I have been to Tel Dan , the site of Jeroboam's northern calf, and it was very disturbing to stand in that place. I have not been to Hermon, but I can easily imagine the feeling of discomfort there being so much greater , knowing the horrors that took place there at the Gates. BTW, you are only the second person other than myself that I have ever heard translate "echad" in the Shema as "alone". It excited me to hear it in this video. It gets right to the point of the message of the Shema.

Its impactful of the parallel there. They are literally at the essentially what symbolizes the temple of the world and Jesus equipped Peter to be the beginning of Christ's church and fight against the world. This is AMAZING! It's very sad to me that most Christians don't even know what this very disturbing place is. This was PERFECT Pastor! I often think about how the apostles must have felt with all of the abominations were going on all around them! It's mind-blowing to me that there were orgies going on, men and beasts going on, to (entice pan) out! Especially throwing their own children in that water as sacrifices! These people were sick but just like HE always did, Jesus had to visually stand up and confront the (so-called gods) to really get His point across. I have to be honest & say he's kinda being economical with the truth, while massively exaggerating it's pagan rituals & origins. The throwing babies into the water is BS it's a spring that was used for drinking water, no one would pollute a source of clean water back then. The truth is it's actually a Nature Reserve under the Israeli Nature & Parks Authority. It's called the Hermon Stream Nature Reserve, it's beautiful place, there are two area's one is the Archaeological site & the Springs, the other is the Waterfall & the Hanging trail. My jaw was on the floor listening to his tall tales. It's not disturbing in the slightest it's a lovely really pretty place.

I think this is problem with Roman Catholicism. They have somehow adopted the idea that the Roman Catholic Church is sole interpreter of the Scriptures which closes them off to the idea that they can be in error in light of new historical discoveries or evidences that contradict their interpretation. For example, “The Rock” is a title that God uses of Himself (Deuteronomy 32:4; 32:15, 18; 32:30-31; 2 Samuel 23:3; Psalm 89:26; Isaiah 17:10; Isaiah 30:29; Isaiah 44:8; Habakkuk 1:12) and the revelation from the apostle Paul that Christ is that rock (1 Corinthians 10:1-5) demonstrates to us who “The Rock” of Matthew 16:18 is; it is God, and since Jesus Christ is God, (the Son, the Second Person of the Trinity) He (Christ) is The Rock.

The first time I heard of the significance of Mount Hermon and the gates of hell is from Chuck Missler. The two men disagreed about a number of things, but because both did deep dive into scripture and the original languages and context, there was some overlap. They both were willing to go where the scriptures and Holy Spirit led, rather than with the crowd.

Proper exegesis & hermeneutics is exactly what Heiser did and what is needed to understand the text. The "gates of hell" is not just a literal place in Ceserea Philippi, it means "death", because Jesus is "the life and the resurrection". That is the role he has been given by his God and Father; to resurrect both the righteous and the unrighteous in God's Kingdom come "on Earth as it is in Heaven" when the living God's original purpose for mankind (Adam and Eve) and the Earth (Eden) is restored forever. You are absolutely right that the concept of "hades" is of Pagan myth origin. A place of afterlife torture was not created by the One Jesus refers to as "the only true God" for He created everything. At Jeremiah 32:35 Jehovah tells us that He would never think of burning humans. Hell is a Pagan lie. Eternal punishment is death forever; unconsciousness. The absence of life.

Caesarea Philippi is not only at the gates of Hell and Pan's grotto, but it is also at the base of Mt. Hermon, which is the northern boundary of Bashan, and it is where the angels of Genesis 6 landed. There is a modern ski resort at the top of Mt. Hermon.

I think this verse can be interpreted in a number of ways. For me personally I like to think that "The Gates of Hades" can represent the heart of sinners. A relationship with Christ always starts inside the hearts of sinners.
