I've had this for a long time. It used to be on KZbin, but it's gone so I thought I would upload it. Nice tune from Sergio Mendes and the girls. I think this was originally on the Herb Alpert TV show back in the day...

Yes, I get an euphoric rush from the accentuated and dramatic tempo changes in this arrangement ...something that I never felt from any arrangement of Arrastão. This is just beautiful. I think it's classic Sérgio Mendes. I have to disagree with Jim in that these lyrics are so much better than the original Portuguese translation and this arrangement far superb over even Edu Lobo and Vinícius de Moraes' own version. I've listened to this on the Equinox album for decades but this is the first time I've seen this clip. Thanks so much for uploading it.

It's Janis Hansen, who became part of the group just after the first album was recorded, replacing Bibi Vogel, who had left to pursue acting. Janis appeared on the back cover of the record though she didn't actually sing on it. She sang on the next two albums, Equinox (which has this song on it) and Look Around (which features her lead vocal on "The Look Of Love"). Mendes then replaced the entire group except for Lani Hall, for The Fool On The Hill album in 1968, which is when Karen Philipp joined.

@tecdessus That clip is from 1967 and it's Janis for sure. Janis and Karen would often just lip sync along on stage during parts that were sung by Lani alone on the studio record or verses by Bibi alone on the early tunes. In the Eartha Kitt video, it's essentially Janis lip syncing along in 1967 to Lani's and Bib's studio recording done in late 1965 or early 1966 for television purposes in this 1967 appearance.

@tecdessus Yeah, Bibi and Janis were great RIP. The other women besides Lani including Karen all did great studio work in Brasil '66, but they had to lip sync along to prior generations of Brasil '66 recordings on TV appearances which was sometimes awkward because often it was only Lani singing on a particular record. Yes it's Bob Matthews, and on the albums he did with the group (the first three) he did play upright. And what we're hearing here is the album cut so it's actually an upright on the audio. I guess maybe for logistical purposes it was easier to have him sync/play using an electric, although you can see that it's not even plugged in - lol.

@@nealsausen4651 , Joao Palma was surely NOT Joel Palmer Mr Palma (1941-2016) was born in Rio de Janeiro (Brazil) had a Brasilian career and recorded with famous artists in his country until 1965. Then he left Brazil for the USA playing for Sergio Mendes' Brasil'66, Frank Sinatra, Tom Jobim, Paul Desmond, Astrud Gilberto, Michael Franks among others He was considered one of the very best drummers of Bossa Nova in his country, and even by US critics. So he was surely not only a local LA studio musician!!

daniel doan : Dear Daniel being an “LA Studio musician” Especially if your first call/top-tier LA studio musician One would most certainly record with or perform with the famous names you just mentioned I based his “English “ name on a photograph of him on the back Cover of an old “CAMCO DRUM CATALOUGE” from the late sixties/early 70s On which he was prominently featured! He was after all a Camco endorser and he did Play “CAMCO” drums if you look at the old videos of him with Brazil 66 you’ll see him behind the Camco drum set! Now while I do believe and accept your account of his name is it not possible he might’ve “Anglicized” his name (I e changed his name to Joel PALMER) In other words is it possible he might’ve changed his name to Joe Palmer as many people from other countries did change their names to make them more pronounceable and easier to spell and remember To The American or English speaking populous, especially people in show business: movie stars are Notorious for doing this! however I will except your explanation again the reason for my original post was seeing his picture on the back of an old Drum catalog and he was indeed identified as Joel Palmer drummer with Brazil 66. What say you say you?! I did not know however that he had passed on! This is so sad as he was still a young guy this is most unfortunate and I did not notice until you pointed it out to me thank you so much RIP Joao!

Blue Ball: Sorry to burst your bubble, but you're right about there being no "digital remix" back then. This is a straight up lip synch job, very common back then. Brasil 66 lip synched many of their tv appearances as their live sound was inferior to what they put out on their records. The guys, the girls, Sergio - they're all lip synching. The bassist isn't even plugged in. Note how Sergio's baby organ keyboard licks roughly match up to the music being played. Then later in the same song the organ comes back in, but he doesn't even fake reaching up to the little keyboard on top to play. Also note how the overhead boom mike comes in after Herb comes out to meet Sergio. That's because nobody was mic-ed up during the performance. Very, very little of the music on the Hollywood Palace was live. Brasil 66 lip synched through many of these appearances. And made a lot of money doing it. Lovely tune, though.

That doesn't mean that they were just moving their lips and flailing their arms. Many times these bands sang and played anyway; we just never heard what they played. There is a video of a performance by the Peppermint Rainbow from 1969 of their hit, "Will You Be Staying After Sunday?" on KZbin. First they run the clip as it appeared on TV; THEN, they run the same clip, LIVE AND PLUGGED IN. Thank GOD for such miracles.

@@shuroom57 A doctor doesn't "pretend" to treat you. A lawyer doesn't "pretend" to create your will. A pro baseball player doesn't "pretend" to play third base. An airline pilot doesn't "pretend" to land the plane. But these guys are pretending to perform their music. They're trying to fool you into believing that you're hearing their real voices, not a prerecorded tape. If you're a pilot, land. If you're a baseball player, play ball. If you're a singer, then sing with your real live voice. Don't try to trick me into believing something else. If you can't do this, then you're not a singer and you need to get out of the business. There is a small core of the musical community that hates fake singing and would never even consider doing it, as it's so insulting to the audience. If you have a sore throat on the day of your performance, I'd rather hear your real, actual sore throat singing than some fake track. I come to see real performers really perform. If I want to hear the track, I'll go out and buy the album.

@@6828oaklawn Wow. You are actually comparing the medical, legal and airline pilot professions to the musical monkey show. Listen, there is a HUGE, BIG @SSED, BIG T*TTED group of us who have the intelligence to tell the difference between life-and/or-death matters and whether or not the geetarist's geetar is plugged in. So, that takes care of that nonsensical "point". As to just the matter of lip-synching itself, alone, I urge you to go back and re-read my comment; I have said that many times ---- and I think this performance is one of those times ---- the artists go right ahead and sing, pluck, tinkle, pound and blow into their instruments, producing a sound that all ---- in the studio ---- can hear. The culprit that should be the focus of your psychotic outrage is the editor, or producer. They make those decisions. In the '60's, technology did not allow for putting up and breaking down equipment lickety-split on a variety show. Sometimes it was possible ---- maybe you can meet these perpetrators in the afterlife and bawl them out, why didn't they do it all the time. Now, your powers of observation are excellent ---- I didn't notice the signs of it not being what you see is what you hear ---- and you are to be congratulated on that. But keep in mind: most live performances, on audio AND visual, are tweaked a little in the studio. Remix here, touch up there, mebbe a little polish on the backup harmonies, who knows? They're not going to release what live sh*t REALLY sounds like, and charge $18 a copy. Like these cellphone bootleg video uploads on KZbin. Acoustics from hell. You want to eat a shrimp, shell and all? Be my guest! But please go easy on the waiter when he/she serves you a plate of the peeled kind.

Bonita canción que me hace pensar, lo cierta que es. A veces andamos buscando algo, sin encontrarlo, pero si perseveramos hallamos lo que es para nosotros y para nadie más.

@@DanielBrown-sn9op Janis Hansen passed in 2017 (so not that long ago) and Joao Palma passed in 2016. Not sure if Jose Soares is still alive - if he is he's probably living in Brazil. I believe Bob Matthews is living in the Seattle area and still playing bass.

I love this group. I love Janis Hansen and Lani Hall. But the guy waving the tambourine around would look much better with his head through it. LOL

My favorite is the guy with the tambourine and Pringles can shaker. Without him, SM & B66's sound would be flat and featureless. Also, the girls are boring in their stage presence, but with Mr Tambourine man gyrating on the stage, it's magic!

I don't know about that, but this group certainly chose their songs very well, and definitely made a song their own. I grew up with 1960s, 1970s Brasilian music, the polished, like Brasil 66 & 77, and the more pure, raw music. Only as a teenager I found out that these Brasil 66 versions were not the originals. On a trip down memory lane.

No No. Herb Alpert stole Lani away on a power play. SERGIO was maaad at Alpert for YEARS! He pulled a power play as he was Sergio's boss. Lani gave the group it's vocal sound.

For some reason Sergio fired everyone in 1966-8 range. He only rehired Lani and released Janis and the guys; never sounded as good again.
