The best speach ever, and the reality is every word was true. The industry that has gone from this country is frightening.

I usually avoid political comment in the public domain, however ... Postlethwaite is sadly missed. Mrs.T ... not so! 'Brassed off' was a very brave production for its time. Pete was a giant of his trade.

Takes your breath away, best and worst of films. have to watch it again, Brings you down to earth no matter how lucky or unlucky you may be, this stands out as a masterpiece. and yes the music does matter, it sets the mood of the whole film through the worst of what England offered as work at that time and the struggle to get a wage that came any way near minimum to live. I am ashamed to have been fortunate.

A gifted actor, sadly lost. What an excellent performance from an amazing film! Talent overflows from this film, writer, cast and crew, but particularly from Pete. A great shame.

The speech means a lot to me as my dad's family worked in the docks and steel factory of Liverpool, all of the old docks were shutdown millions of men were put out of work.

"The truth is I thought it mattered...I thought that music mattered"...The British 90s band Chumbawamba used this sample at opening of the song Tubthumper.

Wow. Amazing speech. I also had no idea that this was where the intro to Chumbawumba's "Tubthumping" came from.

What a tribute to the British Brass Bands and the Community's that were effected by the mine closures. In a similar fashion the middle class in the States took it on the chin by a similar type of Administration and the middle class has become non-existant.

The Beeching report was commissioned by the Conservatives and published in 1963. Most of its recommendations were carried out by Labour which came to power the next year.

This has to be one of the best films ever. But being a Yorkshireman been brought up in the 60s and 70s i might be a bit biased.

Thanks for your comment. I would have to disagree on that one as the Torys will always cut back and close down. They did it with the Railways Beeching, the steel industry, they privitised all the Utilities thing that choice would give the consumer lower bills. Yes you may be correct in what you say but a Socialist Government would have implemented alternate employment instead of devastating those communities.

If we all paid off our credit cards and used alternative fuel sources like wind power from wind mills and solar panels and collected rain water I am quite sure we could bring big business down on their knees.

But it should not have been done without looking for alternative employment for the workers in those communities. That was the crime. Thatcher didn't care about the people affected.

I think you are missing the point here the plans were continued by the next Labour Government only because the annihilation of the railways had already began. The Tories believe in the Market and do not have clue about social issues , justice that is why Cameron this week wants to change EU rules. The EU is not just for the market it is for social issues, people , employment, rights.
