BRAW Full Frame Anamorphic - Test Video Lumix S1/S5 | Video Assist 12g | Leica R | TTArtisan 50mm F2

Hi guys, in this video I'm sharing some test footage of my current setup. In this video you can see how the Sony IMX410 (without OLPF) is performing when filming in BRAW (thanks to the BMD Video Assist 12g). In this tests I wanted to check the Rolling Shutter, Moire (Aliasing), Dynamic Range, Colors, Noise Pattern, IBIS while walking and how the x1.42 anamorphic setup is performing with 2 different taking lenses (Leica R Summicron 50mm F2 and the TTArtisans 50mm F2).
So far, I'm happy with the image quality I'm getting, except for the major problems of rolling shutter and moire. I could fix these problems just getting the S1H or the new BMD Cinema Camera 6K and film everything in S-35 crop...I'll think about it :)
Videos filmed in BRAW 1:5 & 1:8 compression with the VA 12g (geni.us/JIz9v), recorded on a cheap v60 SD Card (geni.us/gubej) in 30 fps and converted into 24 fps

Edited in DaVinci Resolve Studio - I didn't apply denoiser to preserve the true motion captured by the recorder.

As much as I like Panasonic, the S1/S5 and indeed the S5iix… which I owned, the Panasonics do not have the same organic feel… straight out of camera, that the new BMD 6K L has. Like you, I bought the Video Assist 12G and did some shooting; But realized, that while the footage can be worked to look organic, it is nonetheless, missing something. I have the 6KL on preorder; But I’m having second thoughts. BMD’s decision to utilize the same awkward body as the older models is worrying. I know it will be problematic to mount on a gimbal. The slow sensor readout is disturbing. I might just cancel and buy the new Sony offering that is rumored to be released soon. That will have superior dynamic range and best in class AF. Or perhaps wait until the S1HMk2?

The best option, imho, is to go with the FX3/6 + the Ninja V to film in ProRes RAW. Or simply get an used Red Komodo 🫢

So the motion cadence is better with BRAW compared to VLOG ? Less strobing when people walk across the frame ?

Yes, the motion is better with BRAW than the internal codec. There's still a bit of strobing if you film with high compressed BRAW, but with 5:1 it looks good enough.

Is the rolling shutter issue with using shutter angle or standard shutter speeds? Electronic or Mechanical?

Only if you film in full frame with a lens above 35mm

Does lumix S1h have better rolling shutter performance than the s1?

It's the same, but if you film in S-35 on the S1 you get moire...On the S1H if you film in S-35 you have good rolling shutter and low amount of moire. Cheers!
