The video was really well done with lots of rich information about the clubs. However the Fluminense story is wrong. Fluminense was playing against América, a Rio club, and one of Fluminense´s players was a black man called Carlos Alberto, who used to play in America. As an insult, America fans started to call him "pó de arroz" because there was a rumor that he used to use face powder in his face after he shaved. As an answer, Fluminense fans started to use the face powder as a symbol of the club. And to assign the "urubu" racist meaning only to Fluminense is completely wrong and out of the reality. All the rivals did the same. And as all football crowds, Fluminense has some disrespectful fans, of course. Nowadays, some rivals make homophobic insults to Fluminense fans. But as I said, this is not the major part of Flamengo or Vasco fans. This is the minority that is also disrespectful. So I think it's unfair to assign this only to Fluminense as the institution is racist or something...
@EnglishforFOOTBALLFANS

Yes I’m sorry it is unfair on Fluminense. I like Fluminense as a club but at the time I read a few explanations about ‘po de arroz’ (I say that in the video). The one I thought was more plausible was the one I said but I could be wrong - I apologise (I will pin 📌 your comment). I read ‘Urubu’ came from rival Fluminense fans but I know it is not all fans and it was a long time ago. I love the way Brazilian fans take insults and make them positive e.g. ‘peixe’ with Santos... so ‘po de arroz’ may have come from the initial insult from America. I know that Brazilian fans use homophobic chants and insults for rival fans too - São Paulo, and Cruzeiro being examples. Again I’m sorry for painting a bad picture of Fluminense in this video. ✌️⚽️

Fluminense means "native of the river" - Rio de Janeiro" Flumen is the Latin word for Rio and the Latin ending "ense" means the place where you are from. Flamengo started out as a rowing club. Flamengo is the old Portuguese word for Dutch. The explanation is that the club is located on a beach called "Praia do Flamengo". And this beach has that name because in the 17th century, Dutch invaders were killed by the Portuguese and Indian allies and left on this beach. Botafogo means to set fire to something. It was also a rowing club and its name is inspired by a powerful Portuguese ship, which literally "set fire" to opposing ships in the colonial era. Vasco da Gama, as the name says, is the name of the great Portuguese navigator, the first to arrive in the Indies in the 15th century. It was also a rowing club, basically a club from the great Portuguese colony that lived in Rio de Janeiro. São Pualo and Palmeiras were cubes of the Italian and German colonies, respectively. Palmeiras was called Palestra Italia, which meant "Academia Italia" and São Paulo was called Germania. They had to change their name when Brazil entered the Second World War, on the side of the allies.

@@EnglishforFOOTBALLFANS I highly doubt it. Brazilian business mentality is a, no offense to Brazilians, generation behind at minimum. Brazil produces more talent in football than any other nation but they sell players for absurdly prices. I can list countless examples up until the 80s to this month. Let's say Apple, highest market cap company, sold IPhones, IPad & MACs a 1/3 their price.... That's Brazilian football in my opinion.

The Brazilian National team always has respect. But m I think it is not feared as much as it was. The club teams are not so well-known in the UK as they don’t receive any publicity - no matches are on TV and the league is given no attention in the media (newspapers etc.) I liked Flamengo’s performance v Liverpool and I got more interested in Brazilian football because of that. Until then, the Brazilian teams that I saw at the Club World Cup had all played defensively so it was good to see Flamengo play in a more offensive way.

Hello mate, i heard that you´re a Liverpool fan. In your opinion, what do you and Liverpool fans thinks about Leeds United and Nottingham Forest, there is a rivalry beetwen Liverpool and these two clubs or not ? I´m a Palmeiras fan since child and i watch PL since 2007, i really like Man united because of Sir Alex team in the past, but i do the same with Liverpool of Rafa Benitez and nowadays of Klopp, despite the rivalry of these two giants, they are my favorite clubs in England. Good luck with the channel mate, we, brazilians aprecciates so much your efforts!!

Thank you (sorry for the late reply). There used to be a rivalry between Leeds and Liverpool (70s) but not so much now. The Leeds team of the 70s was considered a 'dirty' but good team with great players so a rivalry between the good Liverpool teams of the 70s developed. Now, there isn't really a rivalry - I think we bond over the shared dislike of Man United :) Leeds are a big northern club so there's a bit of rivalry in that sense - but nothing much. Nottingham Forest are in the Championship so there isn't any rivalry now and there has never been much historically too. When Forest had a good team in the early 80s, there was a rivalry because they were Liverpool's main competitors but not so much... and hardly any now. Liverpool and Manchester United are the two biggest clubs in England, in terms of success and fanbases.

Great video bro, but I would like to make some corrections: Flamengo is not only the most "probably" team with the most support in Brazil, but it's arguably the most supported in the world, with approximately 33 million fans according to FIFA; The name Botafogo is best translated as "set fire"; And about the "doze grandes", you pronounced like spanish, but in portuguese is different: *Doze* - the 'z' sounds like the 'z' of the word _zone;_ the final 'e' sounds like the 'y' of the word _easy;_ *Grandes* - the 'd' sounds like ' the 'g' of the word _german;_ the 'es' termination sounds the same as 'ies' termination of the word _series;_ Therefore, the approximate pronunciation of the term "Doze Grandes" is _''dozy grangies"._

Thank you and sorry for butchering the Portuguese! It seems strange for me to pronounce it like ‘dozy grangies’... but it’s good to know 👍 33 million fans is a lot - I don’t know why I said ‘probably’ as I knew it was the most supported club in Brazil. It could be the most supported club within a country but around the world surely Real Madrid, Man United, Liverpool, Barcelona etc. have more fans.

Brazilian football is the best in terms of actual skill and quality. It's very simple, football in the Brazilian league is played how the street kids of brazil play football when they grow up. Have you ever seen Brazilian kids play in the street? Every single one of them are naturally skilled. They are skilled in every aspect of the game, hence why there always exists world class players at every single position on the pitch from brazil. Every team in the Brazilian Serie-A pretty much only have Brazilian players, opposed to teams in fx. the Premier League, ITA Serie A, Ligue 1, LaLiga, Bundesliga. I believe this is why there are so many amazing goals and highlights from the Brazilian league, even though they are not seen by most people because Brazilian league is not watched alot by non-Brazilian people.

The club felt a need to do this as in 2012 Gremio had a bit of an underwhelming season and this was something they felt they could all celebrate and the shirt celebrates his heritage, celebration and himself! Very unique can’t find any online for sale so will be something I will cherish.

@@EnglishforFOOTBALLFANS When the Dutch led by Olivier van Noort lost the war in 1599, they were expelled by the Portuguese. They had to camp in that beach waiting to be rescued by another fleet. The beach had another name (I think it was called Sapocaitoba Beach), but the Portuguese started referring to where the Dutch were as the Flemish's Beach (Praia dos Flamengos). The beach later became Praia do Flamengo (Single, without the “s”). Olivier van Noort was the first Dutchman to circumnavigate the Earth. The Clube de Regatas do Flamengo (Regatta Club, rowing was the most popular sport then) were founded and named after the beach's name, in 17th november 1895. Flamengo had no Soccer team. In 1911, there was an internal disagreement in Fluminense Football Club. Some players talked about changing clubs, while others were even thinking about quitting football. That was when Alberto Borgerth, one of the Fluminense players, proposed to create a football section at Flamengo, where he was already a rower. The idea was approved and, on November 8 of 1911, the Department of Terrestrial Sports was created.

Hey, i'm a brazillian and i have to say something. The "big twelve" aren't a thing, it's more like big 15. Bahia and Sport Recife both have pretty similar fanbase to Fluminense and Botafogo in terms of numbers, Sport having the biggest fanbase of the intire northeast region of Brazil. Also, speaking of titles, Sport has a Brasileirão (1987) and a Copa do Brasil (2008), and Bahia has two Brasileirões, one of them being against the Santos of Pelé. Athletico-PR has a sudamericana, a Copa do Brasil and a Brasileirão. Not even counting Coritiba, which has a big fanbase and was also a champion of the Brasileirão. This comment is just to open your horizons to the brazilian football, because most of the media only talks about the "eixo sul-sudeste", which are the clubs from the south-southeast region of Brazil respectively, and forget about the northeast region's clubs. The term "big 12" was created by the south/southeast region's media journalists and is a vision that exclude the northeast clubs for being relevant. I can rant about this term for hours but i think i will just stop here. Good content tho, keep it up.

I would like to help you with more accurate or kind of extra info about the clubs here. Doze = In Portuguese, the zeta is like in English, not like in Spanish where z = s. Don't worry, you don't have no speak Portuguese. Fluminense [Floo.mee.nein.see] Maybe "Pó de arroz' is an old nickname. Here in Rio you say Flu, Fluminense and sometimes Tricolor. I honestly had never heard "Pó de arroz". Flamengo. The black vulture (urubu) is the mascot, rarely used as a nickname, only when you're joking, making a pun or mocking. We hardly ever refer to Flamengo as urubu. It's normally Flamengo, Mengão (if you're a fan), sometimes Fla. BTW, FLA-FLU is a derby. It's Flamengo vs Fluminense. The adversary supporters refer to Flamengo fans as "mulambos". Botafogo. Fogão is used by their fans. Lonely star is used only by TV commentors. Botafogo = set fire Vasco. Their fans call it "Vascão". Cruzmaltino is an adjective, so TV commentors say "O time cruzmaltino" or "O time da cruz de malta" = the Maltese Cross Team. Corinthians is also called Timão. That's correct. However, "timão" happens to be the same word for the steering wheel you find in ships. That's the true meaning. Palmeiras. All correct. But TV guys never say "porco", only fans commonly during chants. São Paulo. Referred by TV guys as "Tricolor paulista" (It's in their official anthem). São Paulo as well as Fluminense is called by rivals as gay clubs. Idk why. It's just a joke. No homophobic stuff. Santos is called Peixe (Fish). That's all correct. Atlético Mineiro. The nickname Galo is very used by everyone. Cruzeiro's nickname is Raposa (Fox) but you don't hear people say Raposa. Grêmio. Nothing to add. Internacional, it's normally called Inter. We know that Colorado is their nickname but we don't refer to the team as such. If you're a supporter, you'll probably refer to yourself as: 1. Fluminense. Tricolor/Fluminense/Fluzão 2. Flamengoo. Flamenguista/Flamengo/ Mengão/Fla/Rubro-negro (red-black) 3. Botafogo. Fogão/Botafogo/botafoguense 4. Vasco. Vascaíno/Vasco/vascão/Cruzmaltino (rare) 5. Corinthians. Corinthians/corintiano/coringão 6. Palmeiras. Palmeirense/Palmeiras/Verdão 7 São Paulo. São Paulino/São Paulo (Bambi the deer by rivals cuz deer is slang for queer). 8. Santos. Santista/Santos/peixe 9. Atlético Mineiro. Galo/Atlético/Atleticano 10. Cruzeiro. Cruzeirense/Cruzeiro. 11. Grêmio. Grêmio/gremista 12. International. Colorado/Inter/Colorado Here, you don't say "I'm a Liverpool fan", you'd say (in Portuguese, of course), "I'm Liverpool, I'm liverpudlian, I'm Reds" without an infinite article. Well, I know it's a lot of information. That's my contribution. I hope it's useful. All the best!!

The information that +Reinaldo Silva commented is wrong. The origin of the nickname is actually a sports newspaper headline saying that Corinthians was a big team after a match played in the beginning of the 1966 season. Corinthians hadn't won a title since 1954 at that point, so the club spend a lot buying players to that squad, Garrincha for example, but that team failed and didn't win a important title in the end of the season, just a tournament that wasn't so important anymore. So the rivals fans, remembering that headline, started to provoke Corinthians fans about the big team like "so that's the big team, what a joke". The Corinthians fans kinda embraced it. By the way, here's a link telling this story in portuguese www.gazetaesportiva.com/times/corinthians/voce-sabia-apelido-timao-surgiu-na-gazeta-esportiva-com-estreia-de-garrincha/

@@victoralbano97 Ah ok I wasn't sure of the reason... thanks. I Google translated the article... I can't believe they paid a lot of money for Garrincha even though he hadn't played for four years. I like the way that the Brazilian fans take insults and turn them into their nicknames.

@@EnglishforFOOTBALLFANS I agree, but then they should have included yellow to represent Asians since São Paulo City has the largest Japanese community outside of Japan. I don't know what fan page you found it on but I've just looked up on the São Paulo Oficial Page to see if the ethnicity reason is there and it isn't. It says there used to be 2 clubs in the city, CA Paulistano (red and white) and AA das Palmeiras (black and white) where São Paulo took its colors from. This club called AA das Palmeiras also inspired the name of our rival (those green ones). Anyway, congrats for you video, it's nice to see a foreigner having interest in our sportive culture.
