The video was really well done with lots of rich information about the clubs. However the Fluminense story is wrong. Fluminense was playing against América, a Rio club, and one of Fluminense´s players was a black man called Carlos Alberto, who used to play in America. As an insult, America fans started to call him "pó de arroz" because there was a rumor that he used to use face powder in his face after he shaved. As an answer, Fluminense fans started to use the face powder as a symbol of the club. And to assign the "urubu" racist meaning only to Fluminense is completely wrong and out of the reality. All the rivals did the same. And as all football crowds, Fluminense has some disrespectful fans, of course. Nowadays, some rivals make homophobic insults to Fluminense fans. But as I said, this is not the major part of Flamengo or Vasco fans. This is the minority that is also disrespectful. So I think it's unfair to assign this only to Fluminense as the institution is racist or something...
@EnglishforFOOTBALLFANS3 жыл бұрын
Yes I’m sorry it is unfair on Fluminense. I like Fluminense as a club but at the time I read a few explanations about ‘po de arroz’ (I say that in the video). The one I thought was more plausible was the one I said but I could be wrong - I apologise (I will pin 📌 your comment). I read ‘Urubu’ came from rival Fluminense fans but I know it is not all fans and it was a long time ago. I love the way Brazilian fans take insults and make them positive e.g. ‘peixe’ with Santos... so ‘po de arroz’ may have come from the initial insult from America. I know that Brazilian fans use homophobic chants and insults for rival fans too - São Paulo, and Cruzeiro being examples. Again I’m sorry for painting a bad picture of Fluminense in this video. ✌️⚽️

Fluminense means "native of the river" - Rio de Janeiro" Flumen is the Latin word for Rio and the Latin ending "ense" means the place where you are from. Flamengo started out as a rowing club. Flamengo is the old Portuguese word for Dutch. The explanation is that the club is located on a beach called "Praia do Flamengo". And this beach has that name because in the 17th century, Dutch invaders were killed by the Portuguese and Indian allies and left on this beach. Botafogo means to set fire to something. It was also a rowing club and its name is inspired by a powerful Portuguese ship, which literally "set fire" to opposing ships in the colonial era. Vasco da Gama, as the name says, is the name of the great Portuguese navigator, the first to arrive in the Indies in the 15th century. It was also a rowing club, basically a club from the great Portuguese colony that lived in Rio de Janeiro. São Pualo and Palmeiras were cubes of the Italian and German colonies, respectively. Palmeiras was called Palestra Italia, which meant "Academia Italia" and São Paulo was called Germania. They had to change their name when Brazil entered the Second World War, on the side of the allies.

Palmeiras' nickname "pig" came from a mess in a state championship, Corinthians had 2 players deads, if I'm not mistaken it was due to an accident, so there was a vote for Corinthians to write 2 more players, all the teams accepted except the palmeiras, so the president of Corinthians that year gave the nickname to Palmeiras "pig spirit", the palmeiras fans decided to adopt this nickname.

2:25 You see on the map Flamengo beach next Botafogo beach? Its where Flamengo's Club were born. The word Flamengo means Flemish (people that are born in Flandres, Belgium).
@EnglishforFOOTBALLFANS3 жыл бұрын
Thanks - Google translates Flamengo as Flemish sometimes :) Do you know why the beach is called Flamengo? And is the name of the beach/area the reason why the club is called Flamengo?
@MrRc10883 жыл бұрын
@@EnglishforFOOTBALLFANS When the Dutch led by Olivier van Noort lost the war in 1599, they were expelled by the Portuguese. They had to camp in that beach waiting to be rescued by another fleet. The beach had another name (I think it was called Sapocaitoba Beach), but the Portuguese started referring to where the Dutch were as the Flemish's Beach (Praia dos Flamengos). The beach later became Praia do Flamengo (Single, without the “s”). Olivier van Noort was the first Dutchman to circumnavigate the Earth. The Clube de Regatas do Flamengo (Regatta Club, rowing was the most popular sport then) were founded and named after the beach's name, in 17th november 1895. Flamengo had no Soccer team. In 1911, there was an internal disagreement in Fluminense Football Club. Some players talked about changing clubs, while others were even thinking about quitting football. That was when Alberto Borgerth, one of the Fluminense players, proposed to create a football section at Flamengo, where he was already a rower. The idea was approved and, on November 8 of 1911, the Department of Terrestrial Sports was created.

Cruzeiro's "FOX"nickname came by the clever way it's directors played their cards. Aways finding great player deals witch brought championships to the club. With that, came fans, recongition and respect from the whole coutry! @EnglishforFOOTBALLFANS3 жыл бұрын
The Brazilian National team always has respect. But m I think it is not feared as much as it was. The club teams are not so well-known in the UK as they don’t receive any publicity - no matches are on TV and the league is given no attention in the media (newspapers etc.) I liked Flamengo’s performance v Liverpool and I got more interested in Brazilian football because of that. Until then, the Brazilian teams that I saw at the Club World Cup had all played defensively so it was good to see Flamengo play in a more offensive way.

Hello mate, i heard that you´re a Liverpool fan. In your opinion, what do you and Liverpool fans thinks about Leeds United and Nottingham Forest, there is a rivalry beetwen Liverpool and these two clubs or not ? I´m a Palmeiras fan since child and i watch PL since 2007, i really like Man united because of Sir Alex team in the past, but i do the same with Liverpool of Rafa Benitez and nowadays of Klopp, despite the rivalry of these two giants, they are my favorite clubs in England. Good luck with the channel mate, we, brazilians aprecciates so much your efforts!!
@EnglishforFOOTBALLFANS4 жыл бұрын
Thank you (sorry for the late reply). There used to be a rivalry between Leeds and Liverpool (70s) but not so much now. The Leeds team of the 70s was considered a 'dirty' but good team with great players so a rivalry between the good Liverpool teams of the 70s developed. Now, there isn't really a rivalry - I think we bond over the shared dislike of Man United :) Leeds are a big northern club so there's a bit of rivalry in that sense - but nothing much. Nottingham Forest are in the Championship so there isn't any rivalry now and there has never been much historically too. When Forest had a good team in the early 80s, there was a rivalry because they were Liverpool's main competitors but not so much... and hardly any now. Liverpool and Manchester United are the two biggest clubs in England, in terms of success and fanbases.

Great video bro, but I would like to make some corrections: Flamengo is not only the most "probably" team with the most support in Brazil, but it's arguably the most supported in the world, with approximately 33 million fans according to FIFA; The name Botafogo is best translated as "set fire"; And about the "doze grandes", you pronounced like spanish, but in portuguese is different: *Doze* - the 'z' sounds like the 'z' of the word _zone;_ the final 'e' sounds like the 'y' of the word _easy;_ *Grandes* - the 'd' sounds like ' the 'g' of the word _german;_ the 'es' termination sounds the same as 'ies' termination of the word _series;_ Therefore, the approximate pronunciation of the term "Doze Grandes" is _''dozy grangies"._
@EnglishforFOOTBALLFANS3 жыл бұрын
Thank you and sorry for butchering the Portuguese! It seems strange for me to pronounce it like ‘dozy grangies’... but it’s good to know 👍 33 million fans is a lot - I don’t know why I said ‘probably’ as I knew it was the most supported club in Brazil. It could be the most supported club within a country but around the world surely Real Madrid, Man United, Liverpool, Barcelona etc. have more fans.

It was a good presentation of the twelve greats, but I found the part that refers to GREMIO to be very short! The club that won the 1983 World Cup, three times the American Cup and that, among other stars, trained and launched Ronaldinho Gaúcho. One hundred and twenty-one years of history, always among the top teams in the rankings. All this, based in a medium-sized city far from the largest economic centers in Brazil.

Brazilian football is the best in terms of actual skill and quality. It's very simple, football in the Brazilian league is played how the street kids of brazil play football when they grow up. Have you ever seen Brazilian kids play in the street? Every single one of them are naturally skilled. They are skilled in every aspect of the game, hence why there always exists world class players at every single position on the pitch from brazil. Every team in the Brazilian Serie-A pretty much only have Brazilian players, opposed to teams in fx. the Premier League, ITA Serie A, Ligue 1, LaLiga, Bundesliga. I believe this is why there are so many amazing goals and highlights from the Brazilian league, even though they are not seen by most people because Brazilian league is not watched alot by non-Brazilian people.

Just a quick correction, the nickname of "Porco" (pig) of Palmeiras is due to an unfair play they did in 1967. During the dispute of Campeonato Paulista of 1967, two Corinthians players (Lidu and Eduardo) have died on a car crash. The rules of the championship didn't allowed any player to be substituted but an exception could be made if all other teams agreed. All the other 18 teams agreed to it right on time, but Palmeiras prefered to say no, because Corinthians always have been they biggest rivals. From that movement, supporters from all teams started to call them "Espírito de Porco", what can be translated to "pig-spirit", something that can be translated maybe as "wet blanket".

So, about the clubs Cruzeiro and Atlético from Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais (MG) the mascots were given during the 40s. One can easily overlook how the rivals mascots can be set in the Greek dichotomy of Intelect (Fox) vs Force (Rooster). Also, that is a preying fight there. I think you treated their part too fast, especially compared to the clubs of Rio and São Paulo, so here more info: 7:19 Cruzeiro was given the Fox (Raposa) as a mascot (and therefore its nickname) by the cartoonist because its president was at the time clever and cunning as a fox. Cruzeiro also has two nicknames, "Zêro", the way "Zeiro" sounds in Minas Gerais accent, and Cabuloso, that means something/someone that imposes fear and dread on people. In everyday life, Cruzeiro fans use Cruzeiro and Cabuloso to refer to the club, while Fox is the visual representation and "Zêro" is more lyrical, used in chants for example. 6:52 Alt-MG* has its nickname "rooster" (galo) given by the cartoonist in 1945 because its president at the time he had a very combative manner, like a fighting cock (cockfighting is not a completely legal practice in Brazil "the spirit of the club". One can for sure say that "Rooster" is the name most of its supporters use when they refer to their team in day to day talks but also visually/imagetically and lyrically (in chants).
