I actually had no idea Treasure Planet flopped this badly. Treasure Planet was one of my favorite movies growing up and i loved Jim. The kid me looked up at him and wanted to be him. I got into skateboarding because of Jim and his Solar Sailboard. To hear this childhood masterpiece of mine flopped is so depressing. I agree with atlantis and treasure planet, perhaps because I didn't grow up with them, but found them to my liking as an adult, while emperors new groove is too childish for me. It may be because these movies killed bad (and good) people while the "worst" thing happening to someone in ENG is transformation: winning in a single fight against a crocodile, falling over a waterfall, there's no fear or excitement about what will happen anywhere in the movie. Just a "boohoo. I'm cold and it's raining" or "bohoo. This person is emperor instead of me" not to mention the devil on his shoulder doing a handstand, and not liking a quiche was the worst insult ever. Sorry. it's late and I become more caviling the later it gets but I wanted it off my shoulders :P Have a great day, and continue to enjoy these movies :)

I'm just pissed off Disney killed their 2D animation. It's even worse now with the live action remakes. They act as if they have something to improve on their original works, and sadly, I meet a bunch of people who say that they prefer it because "it's 'more adult.'" BS. @@armchairrocketscientist4934 Because it’s tremendously expensive to have a hand drawn animated movie. Let alone the technology 90’s Disney used. Computer animation is leagues cheaper and required probably a ton less people to work on it as well. One of the main reasons traditional hand drawn animation was so big back then was because the computer side of it was still in its infancy. It wasn’t until the 2000’s that CGI, flash animation really took off and took presendce over traditional art.

Treasure Planet was going to be big or that's what they thought. I heard that not only was there going to be a sequel in the words but they were already writing screenplay for a T.V series. But because it failed at the box office they had to put the projects to the side. Also, they made a PS2 game that my brother and I had own. We never finished it. :(

It's sad to say but Disney's been doing that since the 1970's :s people forget that fact and think it didn't happen until the 90's and or early 2000's. Neither case is true....The Black Cauldron is another example of it, and that one almost killed the company which just made them want to give their staff that chance even more. Cauldron was delayed over and over, they kept trying to get the staff who worked on it to do other movies barely into production, not even like half way in, hardly anything had been done on it before they wanted to effectively sabotage it. Treasure Planet isn't the first, and I bet frankly will not be the last time they do it. Now it's more a case of which concept will they do it do next. They will do it again they've done it for the last 40+ years already.

He is the reason behind the movie's conflict, but he's also very sympathetic and he learns a lesson in the end where he learns that there are things more valuable than a whole planet of treasure. He is ruthless, greedy and fiendish and that's why Jim hates him once he learns of his true nature. But at the same time, he set Jim straight by teaching him how to take control of his life instead of just drifting through it. After Silver lets go of his obsession with treasure to save Jim, he recognizes that there are two sides to Silver. One of them is a ruthless pirate and the other one is the closest thing he had to a father.

I liked the movie and loved the characters and how the story went, for me personally is my favorite Disney movie. It completely bombed hard at the box office. And they would get screwed over their passion projects 2 more times. They wanted to make an Alfred Hitchcock homage from the perspective of a house cat. That ended up getting canceled because, as one of the execs oh so wisely said,"nobody wants to see a movie about a fat old director no one remembers". Then they tried to get a hand-drawn animated adaptation of Mort off the ground, but that was cancelled because A. The Terr Pratchett estate tried to sell Disney the rights to the whole Discworld series and B. The execs were "unsure about having Death as a Disney character". My boys started the Disney Renaissance. They deserve better than this, man.

Treasure Planet is honestly one of the only animated movies I've ever seen that realistically portrays what it's like to be a teenager. I connected with this movie so much as a kid because not only was Jim himself relatable, but he was also flawed in all the right ways that speaks to kids because it's on their level. He had realistic issues, such as parental abandonment, which left him depressed; struggling to figure out who he was, who he wanted to be and where that left him in the grand scheme of life as a whole. I have always adored this movie, and this video, in my opinion, hit the nail on the head in regards to the criminally unjust way Disney set this masterpiece up for imminent failure. To you, good sir, I say thanks and have never subscribed to a channel faster than this one. Definitely looking forward to checking out your other content. :)

I'll keep this brief because I dont want to get anyone in trouble, but I know for certain that your theory is correct. When I was studying animation in college, I had a professor who had worked on Treasure Planet, and they assured me that the awful marketing for this movie was intentional. Disney wanted a reason to move away from 2D animation, and Treasure Planet was a carefully calculated scapegoat. They poured a ton of effort and talent into this movie, and rigged it to flop. It was the perfect reason for them to say "this style of animation clearly isnt lucrative, we're putting it to bed"

That song "I'm Still Here" montage scene got me through a rough time. It was always on because My mom bought the dvd and she would watch it almost every day. I think she Identified with Jim's mom Sarah and was hoping that the 4 of us kids would do something amazing to get out of the cycle of poverty... And I identified with Jim. Growing up without knowing where your father is, and having a rocky relationship with your stepdad while you try to improve yourself is extremely relatable. And yes, I'm saying that John Silver was Jim's de-facto stepdad.

Treasure planet was released about a week or two after Harry Potter and the chamber of secrets, the second movie not the first one. Also a few weeks later the second movie of LoTR came out. Harry Potter - November 15th Treasure planet - November 27th LoTR: The Two Towers** - December 18th So positioned between 2 masive franchise films with minimal and bad PR it was set up to fail at the box office. **Edit: Misnamed the movie wrote "The Twin Towers" insted of "The Two Towers".

There was also a really nice detail with Jim. Shadows around his eyes. He has them there the whole time, adding to his teenage bad boy kind of wibe, but whenever he opens up, or at the end he takes charge of things... they disappear and his face brightens. This movie is a masterpiece of animation, greatly written, great characters. When I first saw it, luckily for me our ads about the movie were much better and did not spoil the movie, I fell in love with it. The thought of sailing among stars in such a ship like RLS Legacy is just awesome. To see the stars, planets and so much more from deck of a beautiful ship instead of through window or monitor. Disney really carpet bombed themselves with sabotaging this movie. This could have become something great. I can already imagine a series where Jim takes on academy and under watchful eye of his 'aunt' Captain Amelia, learns what it means to be captain of a ship. Sometimes he fails, sometimes he succeeds, but never gives up. In the end he might reunite with SIlver. Now cadet of academy against a pirate, but in the end they do not let this ruin their friendship. And who knows, maybe Jim could find his father.

Thinking back to the time ‘Treasure Planet’ was released, I can’t stop but to think it’s rarity in movie theaters. My father, who fell in love with the trailer of Jim surfing in his “glider”, tried to get us a ticket at our nearby theatre. Surprisingly, the place didn’t show ‘Treasure Planet’. Couple of days later, we found out that there was only ONE place that showed it (in Manhattan, though not sure of the exact place). I always thought to myself why this film, unlike majority of Disney movies was only shown in scarce numbers. It really comes to show how corporates and executives can control and sway the audience and critics alike, especially when the movie / product is not in the best interest of a company. I think if it was shown in majority of the theaters, it could have been a greater hit than it was before.

Fascinating story, but one not that far removed from mine. I lived in Monaco at the time and desperately wanted to see it on its opening weekend. It was released in the only movie theatre in town/the country... but it was given the smallest screen of the theatre, since the two largest were being taken by Die Another Day and, especially, Harry Potter II. As such, I remember seeing this movie (among the first ones I saw alone, with Erin Bronkovich and Lilo and Stitch) in an almost empty theatre with the noises of the other two screens shaking the small, run-down screen where the movie was shown. Also, the story with your father falling in love with a trailer is a nice touch, and reminds me of my fathers downright infatuation with Gangs of New York after watching the first trailer back in December 2001.

After watching it countless times as a child I feel like it might have been to do with the moral of the story. How money isn't everything and it and greed can turn good people into bad people. They might have not liked that and didn't want a generation growing up being consious of their money, because that's something I learned from it. Considering all the other disney movies out at the time didn't have the same topics. Maybe they just didn't think kids would like it. Who knows.

29:28 to be absolutely fair, the movie itself reveals Silver is a villain very early into his introduction. I think the scene showing that he's secretly leading the pirate crew is only 15-something minutes after he is revealed. It is also hinted at immediately, since Jim was warned a cyborg was the one who wanted the map earlier in the movie, so as soon as the audience sees Silver is a cyborg they already suspect him.

Not to simplify things, but I think the reason the movie flopped was simply because it was dated. Computer animation was all the rage and everybody wanted to go see Pixar movies. Treasure Planet just looked like ( animationally ) how every other Disney movie ever looked. You can talk about marketing, etc.. but I think it was just poor timing. This will probably always be my favourite Disney movie, and I am still a little baffled that it was received relatively poorly. As a six-year-old boy, I was probably the perfect demographic for this movie, but even today, I find the hybrid Victorian-science fiction setting inspired and imaginative. The characters are well-realised (and in some respects more complex than those in the source material), it has a strong emotional core and it holds up as a beautifully animated film. Money well spent, as far as I'm concerned.

I cant believe I just discovered this film but I watched it and to date it's the only movie I've seen where a main character's father just...left instead of dying or something. That little detail is so good because more kids can relate to a father leaving than a father dying, I'm sure. Also my father was pretty similar and I remember feeling exactly like how Jim was when he saw his father leave. This just makes the movie even better to me.

I remember being *SO EXCITED* for this movie! So much so, I almost *forgot* Harry Potter (I dont remeber going to see it). But, I remember when I went to see Treasure Planet. I took my best friend at the time. There was a little boy sitting next to us who had probably seen it 12 times by the time we sat down. He quoted the whole movie, pop songs and all! The three of us shared pop corn, and we theater hopped into the next showing because he was so enthusiastic about watching it again. It was a *GREAT* experience of sci-fi, high fantasy, and swashbuckling! I miss the thrill of watching new features in a theater.

Treasure Planet will always have a very solid and tender place in my heart. i grew up as a kid rewatching that movie DOZENS of times on end and i never got sick of it. especially on road trips, man those were the best. Treasure Planet was not only a part of my childhood nostalgia, but it truly did teach me a ton of things about life and i managed to memorize multiple phrases and lines from the movie itself and i think about it all the time. this movie means more to me than any other disney movie ive ever seen (even Princess and the Frog which is a strong second favorite). i will always recommend this movie to others

It's rare that I'll watch a 30+ minute video that I've randomly stumbled across on KZbin at 3 in the morning... but wow, this really hooked me. I have been genuinely wondering over the years what caused Disney to shift to full-CG films and abandon traditional animation, even after the (mostly) recent success of The Princess and the Frog. The Princess and the Frog was not a success. Disney was testing the waters to see if audiences would take to the continuation of that art style. If it did well, they would have continued 2D animation. It underperformed to their expectations, and that was the last straw. But then came Winnie the Pooh, thus giving you another chance to restore Disney 2D animation by showing up. Well, years later Moana and now Wish were greenlit as 2D animated features but the directors for both opted for 3D because of what could still be done technically in 3D. And they're right, the impact of 3D stories in the 2000's is monumental and is extremely understated, but we will see a resurgence - the nostalgia/assurance that people will show up is much higher than it was in 2009 with TFATF.

I really think that this movie having Jim's father just walking out on the family was more emotional than any parent dying in other Disney films. It's one thing when a parent dies either from a freak accident or self sacrifice, but it's something else entirely when a parent just up and leaves you because they wanted something more.

It's also important to note the point in Jim's life his father left him like Breadsword is mentioning; he left the family when Jim was a pre-teen and close to hitting puberty, which is the confusing stage in life where you don't know if you're a child or not, what identity you have, how your future is looking, and why you're feeling so strange inside (hormones). Since his father left him during that age, then Jim both feels that he apparently wasn't good enough for his own father, but also ended up never having a male role model whom probably could explain to him how it's like for boys his age growing up (his mother could possibly explain it, but not accurately). All this results in him feeling like he has no future and is just trapped in a strange and inexplicable male teen world.

In a deleted scene,Jim was trying to help an alien kid fix his scooter but the dad comes in and basically shoos him away. Jim was when I was little and still is such a relatable character to me. I loved this movie so much as a kid and always thought it was a gem. I didn't even know it was a failure in any sort of way and honestly it saddens me to think about it that way. This is hands down my favourite film as a child. That transition sequence of young Jim instantly growing up and riding his surfer, the roaring orchestral score gaining momentum with more visual stimulus than I'd ever seen in any movie at the time. That scene sent my mind racing for years after it came out and still get giddy with excitement every time I hear it. So few people I know have actually seen this film which is incredibly sad. It's one of those films where I can't work out if I should tell someone to watch it out of it being a good movie or if it's the nostalgia of younger years warping my view. As upset as I am that this movie flopped monetarily, I'm glad it was made in the first place. Have a question for you, in your research did you find any reasoning why there were pushing a summer blockbuster movie near the end of the year? Would it of been crazy to hold onto all the assets and push it for release right as the summer holidays were coming around next year? Oh and also, how come you're hiding your subscriber count? Maybe I'm wrong here but if you have a 'low' subscriber count pumping out content of this quality; people love to see an underdog succeed. Just throwing that out there :) It's rare I right a comment like this but you've put too much into this video for it to get just a "cool". Subscribed and can't wait to see what other topics you have to talk about in the future!

Don't worry. Before I watched this video I was reminded of this movie and was like, "Huh, I should finally sit down and watch it." And so I did watch Treasure Planet for the first time. Your mind is definitly not nostalgia warped, it's an excellent adventure movie with impressive visuals, a great cast and characters and overall top tier performance. Besides Atlantis, probably one of my favorite Disney movies. It didn't deserve to flop.

+Bullwon The Atlantis sequel wasn't a true sequel. DIsney had planned to roll out an animated series to follow the success of the movie. They created a few episodes, but eventually canned the idea. Then, they stitched the three together, and released them on DVD as a sequel in an effort to recoup some of the costs. (That's why it feels like 3 disjointed segments with barely a thing connecting them, it is.) That's also how Beauty and the Beast 2 happened. Lucky shows like The Little Mermaid and Hercules got green-lit, those "movie sequels" would also likely have been trash.

tennisobsessed25 One reason as to why I watch anime... Made in Abyss is my Go-to recommendation at the moment and it might fit as a recommendation for Treasure planet especially... I don't think it's quite as good as treasure planet though (Which is, by the way, still probably my favourite or second-favourite piece of animation ever, only second to Madoka Magica). But: Made in Abyss isn't comparable in terms of theme. This might be a slight spoiler, but: It's NOTHING for children. Everything up until episode 9 might be, but send all children present to bed when you start Episode 10, because... well... Nah, I won't say anything.

I don't recommend Madoka Magica to Anime-Newcomers because of its deconstruction of tropes which you should at least know about going into the anime. Without that, you'll only get half the experience and a damn good soundtrack.

These kinds of videos are a dime a dozen and they're always the same. Don't get me wrong, this is a GREAT video. But what I mean is that there are tons of 20+ minute videos with clickbait-y titles that talk about some forgotten shows/movies and shed positive light on them, for people who never even saw them or for people who had very faint memories. Again, this is not a complaint. Just saying that these kinds of videos are very popular nowadays and when reading the title I just knew what it's content and tone would be.

I feel like this is one of disney’s movies that has themes and darkness for older audiences, yet has off the self comic relief, happy ending parties, needless exposition etc. that are so obviously aimed for children that it becomes confusing who the target audience is. Sometimes studios think they can take the easy road with animation movies since children eat almost everything but they forget that people who buy the tickets are teens and adults. I love this movie though.

Being born in 2001, it is only now that I got to see the full movie and I regret not being able to watch it sooner. I felt each emotion the characters went through, especially when Jim felt betrayed. It is unique in terms of storytelling and animation. Like WOW the animation is so beautiful for something in the early 2000s. Its a shame it wasn't as advertised as it is.

I just watched this movie for the first time because of this review I came upon randomly and another review where I heard it was mentioned as biggest Disney flop, so my curiosity (thankfully) got the better of me. I am crying, this might be the best Disney movie I have ever watched. The plot is finally focusing on a protagonist without a love interest with both parents alive, but no father figure, the plot is so complex and relateable to many, and Morph might be the only ''animal'' sidekick that actually NEVER annoyed me, and he is the cutest one too. ALL the characters were so lovable, I can't... Them allowing it to flop is just..... I can't, this is a masterpiece of animation, story, music.... Everything is so good, I am in tears that this was allowed to die. Just cruel.

This is one of my favorite Disney movies, when it came out I was absolutely enthralled with it being the strange little girl who loved astronomy and space and pirates. I loved the strong female captain and I loved jim and the cyborg - all amazing characters. The story has perfect pacing, the visuals are unique and imaginative and the story though it’s classic treasure hunting adventure is also so much more than that. About leaning into your talents and getting that long needed guidance from a parent/father figure who tells you to reach for the stars because they know you can do it. Not to mention all of the music was contemporary, rather than classical like so many other scores of Disney films. It will always have a special place in my heart. Not to mention I’m still obsessed with pirates and space and astronomy

'Treasure Planet' is a masterpiece. What bothers me, is that Disney seems to forget that not every one of their movies was a classic right out of the gate. 'Fantasia', 'Cinderella', 'Lady and the Tramp' all underperformed in their initial release. They have since become legendary and well-loved through numerous re-releases in theaters, new merchandising every few years and attractions in their theme parks. That's why younger children know about the timeless cinematic treats. 'Treasure Planet' (and 'Atlantis') flopped on its initial release, and Disney should have pushed said movies more into the conciousness of new(er) generations. 'Treasure Planet' could have used a small marketing blitz in 2005, or 2008, or 2012 for its tenth anniversary. Make kids aware of 'lost' movies. Do something with your unloved properties. Make new merchandising available in your parks. It's really quite simple. A classic can only become a classic once it's treated and revered like one.

Disney intentionally flopped this movie. Managers in Disney wanted it to crash and burn. Some people in the leadership wanted to axe the traditional animation studio, but not everyone in the company was on board with that. So it was sabotaged trough the timing and bad marketing.

i feel like their usage of traditional animation and digital 3D animation mirrors the contrast between Victorian and Sci-fi perfectly. It wouldn't have looked as compelling and amazing if it had only been one animation stile, it wouldn't have been fitting to use two stiles for one genre. These combinations made it work as well as it did and that's genius.
